THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF), the country’s governing body of football, is finalizing plans with the Department of Education (DepEd) for the opening a national football academy.
John Carmona, PFF technical director for the Visayas, said the proposed Philippine Football Academy is aimed at providing a conducive football-training environment that will nurture and develop a new generation of Filipino football players.

“A memorandum of agreement is now being prepared by PFF and DepEd to start the opening of the school for football in selected pilot areas in the country,” Carmona said during the PFF-Suzuki U23 Visayas qualifying games at the Leyte Sports Development Center.
Carmona said football has gained many followers across the nation, following Azkals’ amazing performance in international football competitions.
“The national football academy’s operation is geared towards producing players of outstanding football ability, as well as aiding their physiological, psychological and academic growth,” Carmona said.
He said guidelines in the selection of trainees will be both outlined by PFF and DepEd.
“Specialized classes will be provided to ensure that the trainees are grounded in the academic disciplines even as they are developing their football talent,” he said.
Carmona said player welfare including insurance, medical coverage and allowances will be looked after under the purview of the PFF and football associations all over the country.
There are at least 37 member-football associations nationwide.
“Educational supports of the players include coach and player education, tuition and scholarships,” the football official said.
