FRESH from an impressive performance in the Asean Football Championship-Qualifiers, the Philippines received another boost as it moved up 11 places in the latest world rankings released by the International Football Federation (FIFA).
The rankings released Wednesday and posted at the FIFA website had the Philippines jumping from its lowest position of 195 to 184, its highest rank since May 2003.
“Although it is good news that we have improved in the FIFA rankings, it is also worth mentioning that our national team has improved considerably the past three years, said Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Juan Miguel Romualdez. “We have scored more and surrendered lesser goals. I think our rankings will continue to improve.”
Still, the Philippines, which earned 34 ranking points in November, remained as the second-worst team in Southeast Asia, barely ahead of new FIFA member Timor Leste, which is ranked at 198.
The Philippines is expected to jump a few places more when FIFA includes the final results of the Asean Football Championship-Qualifiers, where the national team won three of its four games in Bacolod City and advanced to the main tournament that will be held in Singapore and Thailand.
Only a 1-2 loss to 157th-ranked Laos smeared the Filipinos’ campaign that included victories against Cambodia (1-0) and Brunei (4-1) and Timor Leste (7-0).
Singapore, the defending Asean football champion, is the top country in the region with its ranking of 116, followed by Thailand (125), Indonesia (144), Myanmar (150), Malaysia (153), Laos (157), Vietnam (160), Brunei (167) and Cambodia (178).
Thanks to a brilliant coach and a group of talented players coming from three continents (Europe, North America and Asia), Filipino footballers are getting the respect of their peers.
“This is for Philippine football,” national coach Aris Caslib said after the host booters clinched the second berth to the Asean tourney.
Ed Formoso, the PFF’s promotions and publicity chief, said talks with broadcasters from Thailand and Singapore, which are co-hosting the event, have already started for possible coverage of the Nationals’ campaign in the Asean.
“The PFF accomplishment in Bacolod is a great way to usher in our PFF centennial next year,” said Romualdez. Cedelf P. Tupas, Inquirer Visayas
