Motorcycle mishap kills Fegidero

BACOLOD CITY -- Former national football team standout Norman Fegidero sent an e-mail message to his Thailand-based brother, Dave, on Tuesday informing him that he already had Dave’s entry form for the 2007 Southeast Asian Games.
Dave, a member of the Philippine futsal team that will mark its SEA Games debut this December in Thailand, never answered.
The following morning, Norman received the grim news from Dave’s best friend, James Rafols: Dave passed away after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident in the southern Thailand city of Hat Yai at 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Dave was 29.
“We are in shock,” Norman, the coach of West Negros College, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “We were expecting him to come home to (Bacolod) when his contract ends in December.”
Dave, the eighth among nine siblings, is also survived by brothers Samson and Joshua as well as sisters Leilani, Shiela, Honeylee, Rossini and Norma.
Norman said Rafols, who also works in Hat Yai, is still trying to get details of the accident.
“All we know was that his back was badly broken,” Norman said. “His jaw was also fractured.”
Fondly called “Taboy” by his family and friends, Dave worked as an English teacher in Hat Yai until his death. Prior to his stint in Thailand, he coached the De La Salle-Zobel team for two years, following stints with the RP Under-23 and Senior teams.
Norman said their family is seeking the help of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration in Manila to hasten the return of Dave’s body.
A player who prefers to operate on the left side, Dave studied at Bacolod City National High School and helped Western Visayas capture several Palarong Pambansa titles. He has a business degree from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, where he was an athletic scholar.
Along with brothers Norman and Joshua and cousin Troy Fegidero, he saw action in the 2000 Tiger Cup in Vietnam. He also represented the country in the 2002 World Cup Qualifiers and the 2004 Olympic Qualifiers.
Johnny Romualdez, president of the Philippine Football Federation, expressed his condolences to Dave’s family.
“This is very tragic and Philippine football is grieving together with Dave’s family,” Romualdez said.
Romualdez said he has tasked PFF secretary-general Pablito Araneta to help the Fegidero family bury the national player.
