Another footballer dies on the pitch due to lack of medical facilities
In a shocking incident that again brought to light the poor medical facilities provided for local football tournaments, a young player, Mahesh Thapa died on Sunday after collapsing on the field at Netaji Vidyapith, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
The 28-year-old was playing a local match when this unfortunate incident took place. Representing Raikatpara Sporting Association (RSA), Thapa collided with the opponent goalkeeper and collapsed on the field. Once again there were no medical facilities available and neither was any ambulance service at hand.
The player was taken to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital on a motorcycle but since the beds in the ICU unit there were not available, Thapa, better known as Gorey, was taken to a private nursing home.
On finding no beds in that facility as well, Thapa was being taken to another private nursing home but he stopped breathing on the way. He was taken back to the Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, where he was declared dead.
This is the second such incident taking place in less than six months. Early this year, a young footballer from Bangalore named Venkatesh passed away due to cardiac arrest. Once again there was no ambulance service and the 27-year-old succumbed on the field.
Back in 2004, Dempo’s Brazilian striker Cristiano Junior too had passed away on the field after colliding with then Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul.
A postmortem will be conducted on Thapa’s body on Monday to know the exact reason of his death. None of the Indian Football Association (state body of West Bengal) officials were available for a comment.
