Even with Phil and James out, It still possible to do a 4-4-2 formation. some will say Burkey and Wolf but yeah Freddy is a veteran so mind as well use him and if you doubt his fatigue (which I hope not) you can have Araneta or Wolf as sub (preferably Wolf which means you still have something left in the bag of tricks)

Well for me I think it's better if we use the same defensive formation that we had during the Challenge cup. I'll have Wolf as the lone striker with Angel as CAM. Mulders and Juani in their old CDM positions and Schrock at RM. Lucena and Sabio will be our CB's. With Malaysia hosting the match, I think they'll field their best 11 right away not like what they did in their match here. Malaysia will more offensive in this match like what we saw during the 2nd half of the Manila friendly.

My take (updated May 21): The Coach has been successful lately with playing with double "pivots" or simply 2 holding mids(4-2-3-1), so I cannot see him playing a 4-4-2 in the near future. The 4-2-3-1 has brought his team the 3rd place and historic Philippine National Team's highest finish ever, so why change now? Plus with Lucena coming, we actually have a plethora of high caliber center midfielders we need to get on the pitch! Having said that, if the said players from Europe will come, defensively, we will be even more efficient. Offensively not as dangerous without PYh but if Wolf plays like he did in the game against Malaysia and the middle eastern training camp, plus Angel and Chieffy at full health, we are in good shape on the attack. Above is my dream team and thoughts on each below: Muller(GK): he has had "bad" games for the Philippines, but is it really bad when it involved the U23 and the "old" Coach Weiss? I think he is more than capable of handling Malaysias attack IF his back line and holding mids don't do anything incredibly dumb. He has played well in his league in Germany and has played more than a few with the Philippine NT so he isn't "new" anymore and should be quite effective on his own. Carli(RB): I now am of the opinion that Carli deserves to be number 1 in the NT's right back position(sorry Anton). He has enough pace to pressure on attack and get back on defense quickly and does not get into bad positions often. May lack the toughness of del Ro but makes up for it with his steady play. Sabio(CB): Has grown into the best "last ditch" defender with his sliding tackles. The bad: if he misses it puts the goalie in a very very bad position. The good: no one in the Azkals is better than him in this regards, be it local or European player. Plus his awesome throw ins. Guaranteed starter. Gier(CB): Is he playing in the June games? I have had reservations with his lack of pace but who am I to argue? His last few games with the NT has shown his vocal leadership and key plays WHEN he is not placed in a position where he has to "chase down" an opponent. Veteran Savvy and an important cog of the NT. Why not Ali Borromeo? I still don't think he will be match fit in early June, better coming in as reserve. Cagara(LB): Natural position. Super pace. Fast enough to chase down an opponent when beaten. Lucena(C/HM): Yes, at center/holding mid. It is his most natural position having played it longer than right back. Does not get flustered, a very steady player. Tall enough to defend aerially. Juani(C/HM): His natural position. Excellent passer from the center position, fearless on defense(he blocked a few shots-on-goal with his face in the Challenge Cup!) He looks like he lacks pace because of his long legs but is really quite fast(see Challenge Cup games). Chieffy(LM): With a 100% fit Chieffy it is very hard not to include him as a starter in the NT even with our Euros playing. If we get the Chieffy of last year and his incredible pace, he is surely a cause for concern for any opponent, if he gets it in his head to play defense just as much as offense he would be elite! And NO, Cagara is not better than Chieffy at left wing! Angel(CM): Angel loves to handle the ball, but most of the time he has enough skills not to make a fool of himself and it showed in the Challenge Cup. With his surprising pace and willingness to get physical bodes well for our team and will be a handful against smaller defenders and lets not forget his height and capabilities in the air! Very dangerous and a definite player to watch on offense. Shrock(RM): If he can move around from position to position and be very very affective in the 2.Bundesliga, he DEFINITELY can make waves against a SEA opponent. With his fiery demeanor, will to win, extreme pace, box to box play, if I were the Malaysian coach, I'd tell my players, "watch him"! Wolf(Striker): Watching my old copies of the mid east training camp plus the last Philippine vs Malaysia match, one can tell Denis' good pace and even better defending compared to PYh. Although Phil definitely has a nose for the back-of-the-net, Denis has scored in his very first national team match and also a goal against Al Ahli so he shouldn't be pushing too much pressure on himself to score, he already knows he can. He is a hard worker and with his fellow Phil-German behind him, and a full strength Angel and Chieffy, shouldn't feel as if he is all alone to score, plus as a former 1.Bundesliga player he definitely is someone the opponent can't overlook. *Mulders(HM): I wasn't sure if Paul was going to play earlier, but if he does, I'd slide Juani Guirado to CB in place of Gier and Mulders pairing up with Lucena as holding mid. I didn't like this position for Paul in the Challenge Cup but the series made me a believer. Paul can play this position(HM) and can put pressure against the opponents midfielders through his excellent passes from deep, very good pace and physically large presence on defense. Sure he wasn't offensively a star in the CC but remember when he wasn't in the lineup due to too many yellow cards in the AFC series? We lost that game and seemed lost at HM. You cant go wrong playing a Eredivisie player in your team, can you? Final thoughts: While it may seem that Malaysia will be easy for us, I personally liked the way the Malay defenders play, they are definitely one of SEA elite teams and we would need to play disciplined all around. As a team, I think they play better than us but individually we have some very very good players and should take advantage of the fact. As always, I believe we need to start on defense. The saying "Championships start on defense" matters in soccer too. I don't know the new players Malaysia is bringing in, but their coach is an old timer and we should prepare for them as if they are very superior to us. We shouldn't be complacent just because we've been playing better now. Final score: My guess is as good as yours ADDENDUM: Having the Younghusbands away from this game can be taken as a negative, but another way of looking at it is now we can utilize other players in their place and have them play in a real competitive international game. This can only mean better depth for the NT and the coach knowing about the(the players taking over in the absence of the Yhs) skillsets they can offer. After all, Wolf for Phil and Schrock for James hardly seem to be a loss in skills offered. Updated!: wikingandtheazkals.blogspot.com/2012/05/wikings-take-philippines-vs-malaysia.html

SO Ethridge , JYH ang PYH are the only noteable players that cant play this game? Schrock , Lucena, Cagara, Mualders , jonson and Wolf will play?
Im not sure what kind of commitment the Younghusband have that day, is it business related? I think they should cancell it and play the game instead, coz whatever business they have that day, it all boils down on their football, unless its a wedding.

I think its personal matters. So our FW could be Wolf and Freddie ;D Who could replace JYH? For Phil, Freddie is the best substitute. I hope he is fit and ready to play international again Im not sure if your serious about considering Freddie to the Senior team. I know he is almost God back in the days, but have you seen him play today? I would put Wolf and Angel if PYH is not around, Nate can be the 3rd option.

Many are saying it's because of their sister Keri. They can't afford to leave her behind given that their mother had just passed away, and she will be back to school at that time. It's not like it's just an unnecessary thing. Have you watched the UFL 2nd division games? Freddy has done great wonders for Pachanga being the highest scorer for their division so far. I'd better have him above Nate B.

Sorry but I'm pro Freddy G He might not see the pitch against Malaysia or Indonesia but against Guam... Though degraded from prolonged inactivity, Freddy has always had the "knack" of finding the back of the net, then and now with Pachanga. I don't think he can give 100% for a full 90min but if the Coach can have him play 30 or 35 minutes playing at 100%, we might see some of his old magic again. I say: if Alexander Duric can do it at 43? Freddy G can do it at 32!

I think its personal matters. For as who to replace James, Stephan Schroeck is my best choice, as he has been effective as a winger both for the Azkals (against Kuwait) and for SpVgg Greuther Fuerth in the 2.Bundesliga. Carli can be the substitute. i think schrocky played as a CM or CDM against Kuwait? Cheffy and James were our wingers at that time. i prefer Christiaens or Reichelt to replace James in the RW so sad to know that three of our key players will not play against one of our most important friendly. it's okay if it is against Guam . but against ASEAN champion? oh no!

I understand if its family. But can one of them stay take care of the sister and the other one play? Its not like they will be gone for a month. But anyway, they decide their life not us.

Now about Freddy. Yes I saw him play with Pachanga on TV. He may be good, putting up some number in the 2nd Div. But I still dont think he is an MNT material anymore. He is to slow, slower than Gener. Looks unfit, bigger than Mercado (Air Force Keeper). Even the spring on his runs are not there anymore. I would put Nate,Doctora, Joshua Belayo etc in front of him at any given time. Yes he was good, but that is already a "WAS". Lets move forward

Now Im confused on who is playing ang who is not for the Malaysian game.
I know Niel, PHY & JHY cannot play. Now this news from Mr. Liimpag came out about Aly Borromeo, Jason Sabio, Lexton Moy also cannot play. Do you guys have the official list/roster on who will play? specially those players who are based abroad.

The 3 won't play? Does it have anything to do with their club since they all play for Kaya?

There are no UFL games on June 1 to 12 so why are they not playing? Based on Limpag's article: SO Phil and James Younghusband are going to miss the June 1 friendly against Malaysia because of “prior commitments.”
Now that’s interesting.
The calendar for the friendlies was released months ago, and even I know that the Philippines was going to have a series of friendlies in June and unless the “prior commitment” was signed before the dates for the friendlies was announced, then that’s understandable.
But if it wasn’t, then that makes you want to ask, are Phil and James pulling their weight? No, it’s not a question about their commitment to the national squad because when the Azkals have a tournament, they show up.
But they could have avoided the conflict of schedule if they wanted to, or did they think that when it was announced the Philippines was going to have a friendly on June 1, that it was one of those things that shouldn’t be taken seriously?
Oh well, I think this is why Dennis Wolf, and even Freddy Gonzales got in the picture. If we can get strikers who can do as well, or even better, and are more, shall we say "available" we will no longer have these prior commitments issue.
I'm still confident of our line-up since all Euro-based players will be here to play except Etheridge for serving his suspension.
