Match thoughts after finally watching the game on tfcnow...
The Azkals can play possession ball. Passes were crisp, there were great through balls and crosses. It was good to see Del Rosario and Gener go up the wings to make those crosses. Caligdong was without question the MOTM. His goal was completely of his own making.
But this is a 10-man Mongolia. They had no offense to speak of, so I cannot judge the Azkals' defense. I can almost say there was no defense because their offense was their defense. I posted earlier that I'm glad it's Mongolia that Coach W is trying out his strategy of fast and attacking, and and doubly happy that it turned out well.
As for the lack of conversion into goals, I'm not overly disappointed in that. There were enough quality chances to make me think it was just a bad, unlucky night. Both Araneta and P. Younghusband just couldn't find the back of the net. Those Azkals couldn't score on a pedigree in heat (okay, I've always wanted to use that line), but I saw enough of the attempts that I think if it was another day those would've been converted.
De Jong had some mistakes. He did make up for the one where he lost possession in the middle of the field that almost resulted on a one-on-one for Mongolia had he not made that great tackle.
Yes they were attacking, but were they fast? There weren't enough plays to convince me because I don't think the team is there yet. I didn't see any give-and-go plays. Not a single quality one. What I saw was a lot of crosses and through balls to the center, but that's because the Mongolians didn't have a defense. In effect those could've just been "long balls" but from a shorter distance. If the Azkals are to play a more complete fast and attacking game, they had better have some give-and-go plays and quality runs. I'm going to look for that in the next game. Can't expect to see any test on the defense because I don't think the Mongolians will challenge the defense at all.
Caligdong: 8, MOTM, highlight goal for years to come Gener: 7, for all the folks who said he is old, most of the better attacks I saw came from his and Caligdong's side. Etheridge: no rating, not tested Phil Y: 5, didn't convert many of the chances De Jong: 4, two bad mistakes, and one especially could've resulted in a one-on-one with Neil. James Y: 6, delivered crosses and through balls Del Rosario: 6.5, some good runs on the wings moving high up Borromeo: 6.5, solid as usual Gier: 6, solid, but again the defense wasn't tested much Araneta: 5, I'd like to give him a higher rating, and again I'm not that concerned but that's what forwards are supposed to do -- convert. Greatwich:6.5, one great bicycle kick attempt that could've gone in, some good crosses. Jonsson: 6, not tested much, and there wasn't much to say of the Mongolian midfield to make a better assessment. Sabio: no rating, not enough time

ayaw nga nila tumawid no. hehe. siguro nga may takot na din yung ibang asian teams sa atin. nakaka frustrate lang kasi manood ng laro na dumedepensa lang ang kalaban. ;D ;Dactually, hindi sa ayaw nila tumawid, alam nila na di nila kaya gawin yon kundi ,di lang 2-0 ang score, as a former football player, i've been in that situations before, i could feel within the game kung gaano kalakas ang kalaban at alam ko kung dapat bang iprioritize ang defense & just settle for some counter-attacks(even though my position was either the winger or striker), believe me it's not a nice experience when you're up against superior opponents. ;D

Hey xyz, Your analysis reminds me of bigsoccer.com with the corresponding ratings. I know you post over there. I agree about Chieffy being Man of the Match. I showed that goal to some of my friends from latin america and they were very impressed with the quality of the goal. Veendam terminated their contract with De Jong last January. That is why he look rusty and disjointed out there. He should have stayed in the Philippines and practiced with the team but maybe he is looking around for a club to play in. We missed our midfield general from the Suzuki cup Chris Greatwich. His vision, creativity, dangerous runs and finishing would have helped score some more goals. We seriously need a replacement for Araneta. He had 5 or 6 chances wasted similar to his past 4 games. William Guerridon might be available in the next game and should be tested in that role. Other possibilities at striker are Chad Gould, and Patrick Reichert(pending passport availability). Did Etheridge even make a save? He looked like a field player out there. Great crowd atmosphere. Played the role of 12th man. Will help us in home games in the future. Speaking of the crowd, resident english guys Craig Burrows and Roy Moore who was at the game said on facebook, that they along with BBC reporter Kate McGeon were amazed at how respectful the crowd was to the Mongolians both at the game and when they were at the bus where the fans were clapping and cheering them on. Very much unlike the English fans I guess. ;D Here is the quote "Craig Burrows So many women watching unlike most countries, so much respect for the opposition. The world can learn a lot from Filipino football and I hope they soon will. Kate from the BBC was amazed at the crowd and the respect but was not covering the match she was covering the supporters! Please know this story is not totally accurate but you can read her comments here: www.mb.com.ph/articles/303618/bbc-covers-azkals She really hopes to do more stories on grassroots football here and the growing passion for the game. and another "Roy Moore After the game the Mongolian bus was driving away and all the fans were clapping and cheering them! So pleased to see such great respect! mabait ang Filipinos talaga! In England that bus would have been mobbed, here there really exists fairplay and respect

Azkals to do better in Mongoliaabs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 02/11/2011 12:38 AM | Updated as of 02/11/2011 8:24 AM MANILA, Philippines – With more preparation time before their next game, the Philippine Azkals are expected to do better against Mongolia in their second Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying tie in Ulan Bator next month. Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman and Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella said the Azkals can still improve their game and stamp a decisive victory against the Mongolians on March 15. “This team can play better than last night,” Puentevella said during an interview with ANC’s The Rundown on Thursday, discussing the Azkals’s 2-0 win versus the Mongolian Blue Wolves. Among those who took part in the discussion were Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta, ANC Hardball sport show’s Boyet Sison and sports analyst Christian Soler. Adulation Puentevella said the adulation of the Azkals fans somehow got in the way of the team practices. This, he said, affected the team’s performance. “You know the pressure of adulation, the popularity, they are treated like celebrities now, like Manchester United,” said Puentevella. “Even the coach, Michael [Weiss] was telling me 'Congressman, we're spending more time in picture taking than practicing on the field,’” he added. But given the time the Azkals have before their March 15 game with the Blue Wolves, Puentevella said the Filipino booters will have more chances to adjust with Weiss’ style of coaching. “They will play better, I'm sure, in Mongolia,” he said. Araneta agreed with Puentevella. Weiss, the German coach who took over the coaching reins since British Simon McMenemy’s departure, transformed the Philippine squad into an offense-oriented team. Araneta said this is what the Azkals need to get past the Blue Wolves. “I hope the players will adjust to attacking especially when we saw the defensive stance of Mongolia… We could learn from the first game to do better,” he said. Sison said Weiss’ influence on the team was evident with the way the Filipinos played against the Mongolians on Wednesday. “This first match with Hans Michael Weiss, we already saw a bit of a change. They (Azklas) were able to dominate the positions more than the Mongolians,” he said. Challenging the defense Soler, for his part, said the Azkals has done a good job challenging Mongolia’s defensive stance. “That's exactly what we did, [Emilio] Caligdong and [Anton] Del Rosario delivered a lot of quality balls, quality crosses that really posed a lot of questions on that Mongolian defense,” said Soler. He said the Filipinos had to concentrate their offense near the goal because the Blue Wolves have put up a tight defense in the middle. “The Mongolians were just so tight defensively and we weren't able take advantage of the pace of [Phil and James] Younghusband and [Simon] Greatwich,” said Soler. Hardball’s Sison said the defensive scheme employed by the Mongolians has prevented the Filipinos from making easy goals. “The Filipinos were not able to give the cross that they wanted to give to the Younghusbands for them to be able to take a shot at goal. Not that easy,” he said. He also credited Mongolian keeper, Ganbayar Tseveensuren, for blocking most of the Azkals’s goal attempts. “You also have to give props to the Mongolian goalie, he was able to prevent a lot of goals,” said Sison. Emilio "Chieffy" Caligdong and Younghusband scored the Philippines’ two goals against the Mongolians. Caligdong scored the first goal in the 42nd minute of the game. Younghusband struck the second goal in the 92nd minute, deep into injury time. Wednesday’s AFC Challenge Cup qualifier between the Azkals and the Blue Wolves was the biggest football event in the Philippines in the last 2 years. It was attended by more than 20,000 Filipino fans. Link: www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/02/10/11/azkals-do-better-mongolia

Former coach McMenemy lauds Azkals' victoryabs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 02/11/2011 4:08 PM | Updated as of 02/11/2011 4:08 PM MANILA, Philippines -- Simon McMenemy, the British football coach who used to handle the Philippine team, lauded the Azkals’ performance against the Mongolian Blue Wolves in the recent Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifier. McMenemy, who is currently in the United Kingdom, followed the Azkals’ game against the Mongolians. He said he could not explain his feelings while watching his former team perform versus the Blue Wolves. "Mixed emotions watching the team. Sadness at not being involved but pride in the part I did play. Boys look good. Will go through easy," McMenemy said via his Twitter account. Although sad for no longer being part of the team, McMenemy believes that there are more victories to come for the Azkals. "To be honest it is personally kind of sad, but have to watch, want the boys to go on to greater achievements," he tweeted. McMenemy even commended Emilio “Chieffy” Caligdong for scoring the first goal for the Philippines. "Chieffy is capable of things like that. Glad it was him that scored first," he said. It was McMenemy who steered the Azkals up to the semifinals of the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup. The Azkals scored successful matches against Southeast Asian football powerhouses Vietnam and Singapore, before bowing to Indonesia in the semifinals. The Azkals management did not extend McMenemy’s contract after December 2010 because the British coach has yet to get his Union of European Football Associations coaching permit. He was then replaced by German coach Hans Michael Weiss. The Azkals recently scored a 2-0 victory over the Mongolian Blue Wolves in the Challenge Cup qualifying tie at the Panaad Stadium. The Filipino booters will need to win again against the Mongolians on March 15 to advance to the next round of the Challenge Cup. Actually they should hire McMenemy to be part of the broadcasting team. He is articulate, knowledgeable and will provide great insights on the national team. He will be like ex coach Ron Jacobs was for the national basketball team. Besides someone needs to teach the ABSCBN team proper football terminology and not use basketball terms.

Can ABS-CBN match the salary PFF used to compensate coach Simon? If not, better yet he should also coach one of those football clubs formed by MVP and company. By that, it would be more lucrative for coach Simon to work once again in the Philippines.
Basing on the news I read, coach Hans is assigned to coach both the seniors and under-23 team. Hiring coach Simon as assistant coach is not an option either by Mr. Palami because he doesn't want to have a conflict between the coaches calling the shots for the team.
