Philippines national football team, the Azkals, all set for Dubai testFeb 11, 2012 Philippines coach Michael Weiss believes his men have what it takes to go beyond the group stages of their first ever outing at the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal next month. The Azkals have never qualified for a major tournament, but recent performances against some of Asia’s bigger nations, including reaching the second round of qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, have given Weiss the belief his side is capable of fulfilling their dreams. Qualifying for the Challenge Cup itself is a major achievement for the basketball-crazy nation. The Azkals are touring the Middle East in a bid to prepare for the tournament and will play two matches in Dubai. Tonight they face Uzbekistan’s U-23 side in a friendly - kick-off 20.00 - at Al Nasr Club and will take on Australia’s Olympic team in a second warm-up at the same venue on February 16. German Weiss said: “I think this game against Uzbekistan is a great chance for my men to get into shape. We are building towards the Challenge Cup and our preparations so far have been good. “The team is in good shape and we are hoping that this match against a really strong team will give us confidence going forward. The Uzbeks are coached by one of the best coaches in Asia. Vadim Abramov is in charge of both the senior team as well so he has transformed this team into a strong unit. I hope my boys will learn a lot from this match. “I am not looking at the result against Uzbekistan, of course we would like to win but the experience will serve us well and if we can get going ahead of the Challenge Cup then it will be great.” Weiss, who has served internships with a number of European clubs, including Real Madrid, Arsenal, Kaiserslautern and River Plate, is also banking on the arrival of a number of mixed heritage players like goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who plies his trade at Fulham, Jerry Lucena (Frankfurt) , Dennis Cagara (AGF) [*ed's note: sic - Lucena for AGF, Cagara for Frankfurt] and Stephan Schrock (Greuther Furth), who have been called to the side in the past. “I hope these players can join us for the tournament. “We are awaiting confirmations from them because their arrival will boost the team,” said Weiss, adding that his target is to at least go beyond the group stages. Tickets for today’s friendly against Uzbekistan in Dubai will be available from the stadium from 10:00 today. www.sport360.com/article/philippines-national-football-team-azkals-all-set-dubai-test

Azkals take on Uzbeks' Olympic crewBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated February 11, 2012 12:00AM MANILA, Philippines - After three training sessions in their Middle East camp, the Philippine Azkals plunge into action against Uzbekistan’s Olympic team tonight at the Al Nasr Sports Club’s Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai. The Azkals, who are cramming to get into top condition and achieve cohesion for next month’s AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal, will have their hands full against the Uzbeks in their 8 p.m. (12 midnight in Manila) friendly. The Uzbeks just came off a 2-0 win over an Australian side to lead Group B of the AFC Asian Qualifiers for the London Games with 8 points. This match will kick off the Azkals’ three-game stint in the Gulf. Phl XI is scheduled to travel to Doha for a duel with Qatari first division club Al Ahli on Monday before returning to the Emirates to meet Australia’s Olyroos on Thursday. “We are preparing for the AFC Challenge Cup, and are hoping to reach the final and even win the Cup. It is our goal. We are facing strong opponents and I want to take the opportunity to test the team,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss as quoted by sport360.com. “We have a month before the Challenge Cup and we need to use the time wisely,” he added. Expected to lead the Azkals are Phil and James Younghusband, Rob Gier, Ian Araneta, Angel Guirado, Roel Gener, and Misagh Bahadoran, Jason Sabio, and Lexton Moy. Also to be unleashed are new recruits Luis Guirado, Denis Wolf, and Ruben Doctora with youngsters Joshua Beloya, Carli de Murga, Paolo Pascual, and Marwin Angeles. Co-skipper Chieffy Caligdong, who’s nursing a knee injury, will only be joining light practices and won’t see action in the tuneups. “It’s sad. It’s my first time to go abroad and not be playing with the Azkals,” Caligdong said in a report on gulfnews.com. www.philstar.com/sportsarticle.aspx?articleid=776348&publicationsubcategoryid=69

Weiss wants Azkals to cause ‘tsunami’ in world footballAlfonso Ramirez, InterAKTV · Saturday, February 11, 2012 · 12:11 am DUBAI — Philippine national men’s football team coach Hans Michael Weiss is optimistic that the Azkals’ 10-day training camp in Dubai and Qatar will take their game several notches higher and eventually create not just a ripple, but a “tsunami across the footballing world”. “As you can see, they’re not yet 100 percent. We’re still adjusting after a long trip and we’re also adjusting to the weather and the environment. We’ll get better as the days go by and we have players coming in from Europe so we’ll see,” the 45-year-old German told interAKTV at the sidelines of the Azkals’ training camp at the Al Maktoum practice pitch. The Azkals are here to prepare for next month’s AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal. Weiss, said the friendly matches lined up in Dubai and Qatar are in line with their aim to pit the Azkals against stronger teams and expose them to international level of play. “We always made sure last year we play opposition that is stronger than us. That’s why we have Australia and Uzbekistan now to physically challenge the players, because [the] local league [is weak] and domestically we’re at a very low level,” he told reporters prior to the actual start of the camp. The Philippines is presently 157th in the FIFA ranking, a vast improvement from its lowest placing at 195 in September 2006. The Southeast Asian country, which counts basketball and boxing as its most favored sports, is experiencing a renaissance in football after the Azkals’ phenomenal campaign in the 2010 Suzuki Cup where they beat regional powerhouse Vietnam and faced Indonesia in the semifinal. Weiss noted that the top-class football facilities at Al Nasr Sports Club has somewhat motivated his players to work hard at camp. “We lack facilities for football. In Manila, we only have the [Rizal Memorial] national stadium and the pitches are not very good. That’s why I’m happy that we came here. Here in Dubai, clubs have five pitches. You can’t find a facility like this in Manila. That’s probably why you can see that our players are happy and motivated ,” he said adding that the dearth in facilities is however, overcome by his players’ desire to give honour to the flag and country. “We don’t have five pitches in Manila. But what we do have is players hungry to fight and sacrifice everything,” Weiss said. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/weiss-wants-azkals-to-cause-tsunami-in-world-football

Winning is the top goal, Philippines coach saysBy Ares P. Gutierrez Gulf News Dubai: Philippine men's football team manager Hans Michael Weiss is confident that his team's Middle East tour will take their game several notches higher. "As you can see, they're not yet 100 per cent. We're still adjusting after a long trip and we're also adjusting to the weather and the environment. We'll get better as the days go by and we have players coming in from Europe, so we'll see," the German mentor told Gulf News on the sidelines of his side's training camp. The Philippine team, also known as the Azkals, are in Dubai for a 10-day training camp in preparation for next month's AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal. They are due to play a match against the Uzbekistan Under-23 side at Al Maktoum Stadium tonight (8pm). "If we can bring in a few more European-based players we'll have a good chance to make the top four in Nepal. Should we get to the semi-finals you never know what might happen. Our primary goal is to win and that would cause a tsunami across the footballing world." gulfnews.com/sport/football/winning-is-the-top-goal-philippines-coach-says-1.978801

What is your preferable formation and position of our players? PYH and Denis Wolf is a very good tandem I'm running out of options for now, but here's mine: -If Müller is still not with the team as of today, Sacapaño gets the GK position. -I'd put Juani and Giero as center backs. Carli and Gener at wingbacks. -De Jong doing holding mid, Moy as sub. -James YH, the temporary captain accdg. to reports, plays his usual position. Bahadoran replaces Chieffy as left wing. Marwin and maybe Doctora as subs. -Angel doing the attacking mid/second striker role. Beloya as sub. Should move forward as needed. -Phil YH & Wolf as strikers. I don't know with you, but we have to prevent the Uzbeks to constantly make the midfield chaotic.
