Korean footballers, Azkals in friendlyBy JONAS TERRADO and CLYDE MARIANO January 3, 2012, 10:22pm MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Azkals will hold another friendly match on Jan. 21 when they battle a club team from Incheon, South Korea at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Organized by Dragon Promotions, which has staged pool events in the country, the match will benefit those who were affected by Typhoon Sendong. It is however unknown if which team from Incheon will play the Azkals in this friendly that is part of the latter's preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup in Katmandu, Nepal. Two pro clubs located in the area are the Incheon United FC of the K-League, the top-tier football league in the country, while the other is Incheon Korail FC of the Korea National League. Incheon United finished 13th in the 16-league K-League during the recent 2011 season while Incheon Korail made the playoffs of the 2011 Korea National League. Before the Koreans tangle with the Azkals, a series of friendly matches will kick off the hectic football schedule, starting with this Saturday’s goodwill game between the Azkals and the FC Internacional de Madrid at the Rizal pitch. The Spanish club will also test the mettle of recently-crowned AFL champion Air Force on Tuesday. The Spanish club will be brought here by Bob Bayona and his British partner Stephen Newman, a long-time Philippine resident married to a Filipino. Proceeds will likewise go to the victims of Typhoon Sendong. Newman said it would be the first time that a squad from Madrid is coming to the country to strut its stuff, making the event a must-see for football aficionados. Less than a week after the Spaniards’ visit, it will be the turn of the Germans to showcase their wares as a prelude to the 31st anniversary of the Philippine-German month. Azkals coach Michael Weiss will officiate the game that is organized by the German Club of Manila, Hanns Seidel Foundation, the German Embassy and the Office of the Solicitor General. The Cranes is composed of Germans living in Manila. German Club president Michael Scheile said bringing the team to Bilibid is their way of showing support to the rehabilitation program for inmates under the promotion of the Solicitor General’s office which is similar to the programs in Germany. www.mb.com.ph/articles/346916/korean-footballers-azkals-friendly
So our true coach will be the match official? hehehe ;D

Koreans to play Azkals for charityBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated January 04, 2012 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines - A top Korean football club from Icheon will also be coming over to play the Philippine Azkals in a charity match for the benefit of victims of typhoon “Sendong” on Jan. 21 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, organizers ABS-CBN and Dragon Promotions announced yesterday. “The Jan. 21 game will be a great challenge to the young Azkals as they take on one of the top pro teams in South Korea from Icheon. Many members of the Icheon Korean Team have World Cup experience. The Azkals will have to be in top form in order to win this game,” the organizers said in a statement. As this developed, a friendly match between Bilibid Prison’s medium security inmates and the German Club (GC) Manila’s resident football team, the GC Cranes, will be held Jan. 14 in Bilibid. The Azkals, who will likely be joined by standouts from the Under-23 team and UFL for the match, are expected to learn from the Icheon booters. Korea is a certified powerhouse, having had eight Fifa World Cup stints, the most for an Asian, and boasting of the most organized football program structure in the continent from the juniors to the pro level. The Koreans will be the latest top-flight foreign team to come to Phl. Global icon David Beckham and MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy played the Azkals last month while Spanish third division club CF Internacional de Madrid (CFIM) is due for a charity game on Saturday. Like CFIM, Icheon will play an Azkals-reinforced side in a fund-raiser for thousands of families affected by “Sendong” last month in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Players will be appealing to the Filipino and Korean communities to rise up and support the cause. All ticket proceeds will be donated to charities helping the affected families. www.philstar.com/sportsarticle.aspx?articleid=764699&publicationsubcategoryid=69

Please don't confuse us, PHI media! My South Korean friend is enraged that they're confusing Filipino readers on what side the Azkals would be facing. Incheon and Icheon are two very different cities! Incheon is a metropolitan city; he compares it to my hometown Davao City. Icheon is a provincial town; it's much like Antipolo, Rizal, he says.
From his research, he is still confirming that if this is Incheon United they'll be facing, it could be part of a post-season tour of the club, much like the LA Galaxy did last December.
Incheon United is a very good test for our midfield as they are very strong in this area, although they are not good goal-scorers based on their stats last season. Incheon Korail is also a good side in his opinion. Their strength lies in wing-play and set pieces. Icheon Citizens is weak on defense.
Please, PHI media, you have to re-do your research! Please don't confuse us!

It can't be Icheon as they have a 3rd tier team. If its not Incheon United FC then it could be Incheon Korail its 2nd tier but they've beaten K-League teams during the Korean FA Cup(similar to Englands) and are ranked quite high(6th). They also said the team has "World Cup" veterans so I'm leaning on the team being IUFC. wikingandtheazkals.blogspot.com/2012/01/jan-21-azkals-versus-incheon-united-fc.htmlTo be honest, the posters in this thread seem to know more about the probable opponents and straight facts than some of the professional sports writers out there now. Think I'm lying, read Bong Pedralvez' (of Malaya) most recent article. Add: The Philippine NT is being given quality opponents at home which they can use as their warmup/training for the Challenge Cup. I hope they use these games to get ready instead of just being serious when they go to a 1 week training camp somewhere(even if their squad is incomplete). There shouldn't be an excuse for "lack of training time" the U17 coach is so fond of saying.

Dragon Promotions Expands to Football : Philippines VS Korea Soccer Manila, Philippines- The #1 sport in the world is about to get a taste of billiard infusion. Billiard event producer Dragon Promotions will be producing its first ever football game as the Philippines takes on visiting Korea. TV giant ABS-CBN in partnership with Dragon Promotions will produce and air this highly anticipated match-up which will take place January 21, 2012 in Manila at Rizal Memorial Stadium, the Philippines National Football Field. Soccer has quickly risen to be the hottest sport in the Philippines now in less than 2 years. Big corporate companies and massive media coverage have boosted football and its national team, the Azkals, into super stardom. In the past month they have even hosted marquee names such as David Beckham and the LA Galaxy. The Azkals are the National team of The Philippine Football Federation (PFF), the governing body of football in the Philippines which is sanctioned and recognized by FIFA. FIFA is the International Federation of Association Football located in Zurich, Switzerland. FIFA is responsible for the organisation and governance of football's major international tournaments, most notably the FIFA World Cup, held since 1930. "We are really excited about our first venture into a new sport. Football is most watched sport of the world, and we are amazed at the growth of it in the Philippines. It literally feels like an overnight sensation due to the diligent work of the Philippine Football Federation and vast support of ABS-CBN", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions. Dragon Promotions is also ABS-CBN's partner in producing major billiard events such as the Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship and the Predator International 10-Ball Championship. Dragon Promotions has for over a decade brought billiards to millions of people through its television events. Dragon Promotions was voted #2 Most Influential Company in the Sport of Billiards by a worldwide poll. "We've had vast experience over the years in billiards, which is regarded by many as a niche sport. We have always had it in our minds to be as mainstream as possible, which means you have to be open minded. Our success in billiards has opened up many terrific new doors in different industries. For us to now go from a niche sport to the number one sport in the world is about as exciting as it can get for us right now. We believe the things we will learn will carry back over to our billiard events", said Charlie Williams, Founder of Dragon Promotions. South Korea is the most successful Asian country in football in the history of the FIFA World Cup. South Korea has participated in eight World Cup tournaments, which is the most amount of appearances for an Asian country. With a very organized infrastructure of junior programs all the way up to a national pro league, South Korea's experience is vast and till this day still remains as the only Asian team to ever make the Semi-Finals of the World Cup. The South Korean national team is currently ranked #32 in the FIFA World Rankings, while the Azkals are ranked #159. The Azkals have been getting valuable experiences with top tier football teams. Toughened by recent games with the likes of David Beckham's LA Galaxy and upcoming CF Internacional de Madrid from Spain. The Azkals have posted up some great victories this past year over teams such as the 4-0 shutout of Sri Lanka and an upset victory over Nepal. The January 21 game will be a great challenge to the young Azkals as they take on the South Koreans. The Azkals will have to use their home field advantage and be in top form in order to win this game. "ABS-CBN is really excited about our further ventures with Dragon Promotions in this upcoming goodwill football match. During this sad time of the floods, this event is bringing forth our Korean communities living here together along with their Filipino neighbors for a common cause to help. Even though it is a tragic situation, out of this we hope to bring our two cultures closer together. This would be a hopeful beginning of the New Year", says Peter Musngi, Vice President of ABS-CBN Sports. Dragon Promotions and ABS-CBN will be working on various charities in relations to the soccer match for the victims from the floods caused by Tropical Storm Washi which caused the deaths of 1200 people and left 60,000 homeless. Azkals to face South Korean side in Sendong benefitReuben Terrado, InterAKTV · Wednesday, January 4, 2012 · 8:16 pm Koreans, who perhaps have the biggest population among foreigners in the Philippines, will now have a chance to help victims of Sendong through football. The Philippine Azkals will have another benefit match this month as they will play against a South Korea third-tier club Icheon Citizens in an event organized by Dragon Promotions on January 21 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. It will be the second match that the Azkals will play this month as they will also be pitted against Spanish third division side CF Madrid on Saturday. Dragon Promotions will organize a football event for the first time with the outfit more known to organizing billiards tournaments. Charlie Williams, founder of Dragon Promotions, said that the event is an opportunity for the Filipinos to develop a cultural bonding with the South Koreans as well as help the typhoon victims in Northern Mindanao. “We felt confident that we could use our vast international experiences as expert organizers to help make it happen,” said Williams in an email interview with InterAKTV. “It’s an opportunity for Koreans living in the Philippines to join and support the cause and the sport, which is growing by leaps and bounds.” Williams said that the event will also have an upside for the Azkals as they prepare for the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup which will be held this March. “It just gives them more international experiences to make the Azkals stronger, especially in Asia which we feel is an important factor for the growth of football in Philippines. The Icheon Citizens is one of the teams in the Challengers League, the top amateur league in South Korea. Williams said that the team is composed of top rookies and seasoned professional players. “It will be a good challenging game for the Azkals,” Williams assured. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/azkals-to-face-south-korean-side-in-sendong-benefit

The Azkals to play Icheon Citizen FC. Q&A with Charles WilliamsBy: Rick Olivares - twitter: @rickyolivares Sat. Jan. 07, 2012 The Philippine Men’s Football National Team will be playing a second exhibition match on January 21, 2012. Here’s an interview with one of the key figures behind the match, Charles Williams of Dragon Promotions. Rick Olivares: Can you provide us with information regarding the match between the Philippine Men’s Football National Team and the visiting Korean team? Why so close to the Typhoon Sendong football match? Charles Williams: The date is 100% set for Jan 21, 2012. The date suggestion came direct from Mr. Dan Palami, the team manager of the Azkals. It turned out that the Korean team was also available on that date, so January 21 was given a go signal. This is a benefit game and the South Korean football players are coming to help. So we believe that all Filipinos should be united since we are doing this for Typhoon Sendong victims. Also, it's an opportunity for Koreans living in Philippines to join and support the cause as well as the sport which is growing by leaps and bounds in the Philippines. The Vice President of ABS-CBN Sports Peter Musngi and I placed high importance on making this a benefit game with a chance to involve the Korean communities in the Philippines, which could help the afflicted families in Cagayan de Oro and impact culturally the future of Filipino/Korean ties. This would also serve as a great tune up for the Azkals for the AFC Challenge Cup which will be held in Nepal in March 2012. It will also be the first time the Azkals to face a South Korean team and it just gives them more international experiences to make them stronger. The more opportunities Azkals get at tough opponents, the better they will be able to rise amongst their current rivals. This is crucial as an important factor for the growth of football in Philippines. So on many different levels, the Philippines vs. Korea Match is more than just a "friendly" categorized game. Rick Olivares: Would you have information on the Korean team that would be playing so we can write about the team coming over? Charles Williams: The team is called the Icheon Citizen FC, and they are the division champions in Korea's league system. They have a mixture of strong rookie and seasoned professional players on the team. It will be a very challenging game for the Azkals. ------------------------------------------- Information about Icheon Citizen: Icheon Citizen plays in the third tier (16-team Challengers League) of the South Korean league system. They play in the Icheon City Stadium that seats 25,000 people. The club was formed in 2009 and where they finished fifth in place, their highest finish to date, in their maiden year. pinoyfootball.com/index.php?page=newsupdates&newsId=11100176bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2012/01/azkals-to-play-icheon-citizen-fc-q-with.html

It's estimated about 1 million Koreans reside in the Philippines. I wonder where the report got this number from. SKorean total population is less than 50 million, so more than 2% of them are living in the Philippines? No way. According to various Korean sources, it's around 100 thousands who RESIDE in PH, and i'm pretty sure this is closer to actual number. I think 1 million is still overcounted even if it includes all the tourists briefly visiting PH in a year. Many sources say that yearly SKorean tourists are around 500 thousands to 700.

"Extra Rice" should be our starting GK in this match si Sacapano 2nd choice at ipalit pag malapit na matapos ang game hehe Any rundown about our next enemy? hehe LOL. We want "Extra Rice"! ...seriously, I want Edmundo Mercado instead of Sacapano. Age notwithstanding, he's clearly superior. I did some research and found that while they're technically in the third tier, they're not exactly "third division". Because their league is an amateur league, none of the teams are ever promoted or relegated. So the teams in that league just play for fun. I'm tempted to jump to conclusions, but I hope this is a decent team.
