Good win by Azkals. Nepal isn't as good as Singapore which makes the world ranking suck big time. But that game served as a good buildup for our boys. It helped our new reinforcements to jell together with our maintstays and most importantly rebuild the composure of Phil YH that had been missing. Phil showed tonight that he's more composed and he's now looking for his teammates instead of going for glory when he's still outside the box. The goal of his brother should be a example for him. Why not fake before you take a shot. I just hope he continue to pick himself up in the UFL prior to the Challenge Cup next year. Overall, all the players played well especially Cagara and Mulders but except for Araneta. C'mon sir Ian get your act together. Don't waste your chances. Yes I'm with you, but with the Ian situation, I've always rooted for him as he has done great service for the country before and he is one of the locals, but I am not a blind fan. I think he needs to reevaluate what he is doing or not doing. I haven't been a great supporter of Nate Burkey(as you can tell from my ICanServe tourney "observations") but comparing these two guys' performance tonight, Ian made Nate look very good! Nate was actively fighting for and moving the ball which Ian hasn't been successful in doing for awhile now(not to mention placing himself where the ball is or will be). I don't care too much if Nepal are minnows(who happen to be at 135?), I think this game is good for the team (especially the higher skill level guys) as preparation for next years AFC. They get to know each other so they won't be strangers come the AFC next year. The Singapore game was a good learning experience for them too I'm sure(and it seems the coach also). I'm truly excited for next year, but first SEAG! Are they ever going to implement the ELO ranking system? They have it for the womens don't they?

Cagara played his usual LB position while Lucena played CB but later on played CDM when Gier was subbed in for Mulders.

Inspite of the better results in this game, I think the Azkals played a better game in the first half of the Singapore game against better opposition than this game. Guirado was the other striker then and would not have wasted the chances that Ian was given in the game against the ineffective Nepalese defence, plus they were winning the possession game against a more experienced and well drilled team like the Singaporeans in the first half of that game. I was impressed by how they played in the first half against Singapore and thought that if Schrock was present, we might have had a different outcome in that game as well.

Mulders was really the catalyst for our creativity. After he got subbed everything was pale normal. But eventually the creativity was supplied by both Cagara and PYH. Hopefully PYH will balance his game with his striking and creating for others. Superb performance by PYH.
Jonsson was really decent in RB but you could see him having hard time kicking long balls and clearance with his right foot.
JDJ was all over the place but im not really impressed with his tackles. Looks like some of it should be yellowed. Thats why I rate Ott more because of his vision/defense/dribbling is better than Jason.
Lucena was a beast in CB, his tackles and clearance was superb. His partnership with Aly was great. If he'll be around next year I would toss up the other CB position between Gier and Aly.
With Schrock and Angel around it would be definitely a dream team for us. Just like what coach Weiss said it would be fair enough to judge them if they are fit, ready and prepared on each match. But still his substitution is a little off for my taste. O well im no coach, i'm sure he knows what he is doing and hopefully he really have his system and plans.
Overall it was a fantastic game and great attacking form.

royg, I agree. Fil Dutch Paul Mulders along with Fil Danish Dennis Cagara who played his first 2 games for the Azkals, were especially instrumental in the win, providing assists, controlling the tempo of the game, maintaining possession and stripping the Nepalese of the ball. The shots on goal was like 14-4 with like an 80% or more possession percentage in favor of the Azkals because of the quality of our players. I think with the addition of our missing players on the team like Stephan Schroeck, Angel Guirado, and Manny Ott and a few more forwards who can finish, the team is going to be a formidable team to deal with in future tournaments next year. The only problem is just like in the 1st 2 rounds of WC qualifying is will their clubs release them?

Interesting fact about Nepal:
Nepal who rarely travels abroad and play international friendlies, suffered only their second defeat in 6 international friendlies in their history, both losses being away from home.
It is interesting that the Nepalese have a good grasp on the statistics of their team. Does anybody know how many international friendlies the Philippine national football team has made in their history? Do we even have a record of our total wins-loss-draws in our history? How about player's caps, goals, assists, goalie wins or shutouts? I know our federation doesn't have a website, but is there a source anywhere where we can find out this stats?

There is but you're making me work too hard! I'll see what I can find out... From the articles posted here by the members, there's a "reason" why Nepal has been "enjoying" playing at home too much. Oh well, at least we know something about one of the PI's opponent next year. @dan looked like about 8000 people showed up if the max seating is 14000. I suppose we cant compare it(friendly) against a WCQ game. But it's a start! Hey I'd love to talk about Mulders again, Phil's goal was from a Mulders STEAL(or interception) and ASSIST. I'm glad most everyone noted how smooth and effortless his ball movements were. Now THATS high level 'football'. There's a replay tonight by the way.

i've been browsing this site for quite a while and am really impressed by the football fans here. i am from nepal and went to watch the match myself. despite all the hype of nepalese football team being better than azkals, all of us knew our level and were not surprised with the result. Azkals played with simple tactics using long balls to empty spaces with the players relying on their physical advantage. This kind of tactic will work against weaker teams like nepal, but when your opponent can match your physical strength, then it will all come down to tactical plays. Azkals need to work on that. The other thing is that you are trying to rely on foreign based players a lot. I think this is a good opportunity for the azkals to bring up local players. If you look at Nepalese team, the average age of the players is 22. Our current coach Graham Roberts has already pointed out that his main aim is for the South Asian championship. I like the fact that he is developing the team for the future. The best players in our squad, no. 6 defender Rohit Chand and no. 7 midfielder Jajgit Shrestha are both still in their teens. He even brought up some under 16 players to train with them before embarking in this tour. Few years prior, it was impossible for a football player to make a decent living by just playing football. But our local league is starting to gain momentum and things look brighter now. Local players are playing in Nepal during the football season and even play for foreign clubs during off season. Actually, the reason the pitch against Jordan was so bad is because we had just concluded our regular season few weeks before that and was worsened by a stupid Bryan Adams concert This was the first time Nepalese team traveled outside of South Asia to play a friendly. Even that was an achievement in itself given our economical status. And they are travelling with just 23 players and 3 coaching staffs. They don't even have a physiotherapist with them. Two years ago, nobody only a few people knew about football here in Philippines, now the azklas are doing a great job of popularizing it. But it's really disappointing to see the stadium half empty. As some of you were pointing out earlier, most of our wins were in our home ground. One of the major factor in that is our home fans. Whether it's a senior squad or a U-19 team, the stadium is always full and very loud. We love football immensely, just like you guys like basketball here. Anyway, being a mad football fan, i am really happy to have watched our national team play here (although not happy to see them get spanked). Together let's bring up football here in philippines.. Cheers to Azkals! Cheers to Nepal! Cheers to Football!

Wiking;
actually I already know the win-loss-draws of the Philippines. It is a pathetic 33-152-26. Can you find more about the caps, goals, goalie wins and shutouts. thanks.

@spikymaska,
welcome to the forum. thanks for the comments. hopefully you didn't get offended by some of the comments here on your team, your football pitch and federation officials. I apologize if you did.
Your team is young and have a good coach and i think is doing the right steps by exposing your players to international competition outside your country in order to improve. Good luck at the SAFF championships.
BTW, you will see our young players perform next month at the SEA games where only players at the U-23 level is allowed. Some of them have already shown their mettle here at this game and at the Long Teng Cup but they are about to embark to japan soon to train for the event as a full team.
