@wiking: Matty Hartmann was a left-back during his Portsmouth days, and he also played left-back when he suited up for the NT about 6 years ago. Darren must've meant that he hadn't played that position in a long time.

Chieffy's 2nd goal is Messi-like, except he came from the left side of the box, and used his right foot. The set-up and moves were all the same. Great goal!!!

Apparently, again according to Darren, Chieffy was the one that kept in contact with Matt and pushed him to get in shape and play soccer again! Good work Chieffy. Thanks for the info!

Thank you for the comprehensive comments, Wiking. There are many of us here in the boards who didn't or cannot watch the game.
Been mentioned already, but it's really impressive that Chieffy has taken his game to another level. But he is tiny out there and gets pushed around like the freshman nerd in high school.
Any idea of possession stats? Couldn't find any.
So the Azkals played better after the 2-0 score. Did HK change their strategy to a more defensive stance, or did the Azkals really play that much better?

... ;D Sorry, I didn't even bother opening the links that you posted since most fans tend to mix up national and club level competition.. Tactics are very different in those levels and a good example of that is the Seria A (Italian League). The said league employs a more offensive minded approach if you compare that to (their) national level competition it not about national and club level competition and tactics and strategy applied. Its about your point that Italy is still a defense oriented team, a vestige of their bygone era of playing style. Though you did comment on the 4th game, the other games are an example of goals scored does not necessarily reflect the playing mentality of a team which you seem to point out in your previous post. Precisely, the tactics employed were defensive in nature. The facts and statistics I've provided were based on the performance of the Italian NT and the results were just a reflection of the games played. Same is true with the WC2006 in which teams played more defensively especially during the knock out stages.. Which resulted to the number of goals scored in the tournament. Both the media and football analyst were able to pick that up.. I hope you've manage to get my point since it seems like you have a different interpretation..

Did HK change their strategy to a more defensive stance, or did the Azkals really play that much better? Hi xyz1000, I'll be honest, I don't know if the HKers changed tactics or strategy, but I'll go out on a limb and say no, the announcers BobG and Darren Hartmann were mentioning the "blank look" of the HK coach. He was very reserved as a matter of fact just sat down unlike Wess who was standing throughout the match. Its also important to mention that the coach is just an interim coach, they are waiting for a new mentor. I think the article is in this site somewhere. About the Azkals playing better, well, the first HK goal was actually at 1 minute 10 sec. I think this pretty much stunned the whole team and at this point, rookie CB Oliver P seemed "awestruck" in my own opinion. After the second goal at 22min it seemed the veterans started to act, well, like veterans and so the rookies followed suit. The PG goal by Phil pretty much got the competitive juice flowing by then. From there it was back and forth, and the rest as they say, is history. This is just my opinion though, others might have different. Sorry no possession stats. Thanks kulaspero15, I really like to view the players individually rather than collectively, I'm a geek like that I suppose

@wiking: IIRC Matthew played on the 1-0 win against Cambodia in the 2005 AFF Cuo Quals in Bacolod. Played LB in a 4-5-1. Lineup (based on spotty memory, if anyone remembers feel free to correct) was: GK Casas RB Anto Gonzales CB Johanne Sablon, Aly LB Matty RM James Y'h CM Henry Brauner Jeffrey Liman Chris Greatwich LM Ariel Zerrudo (Chieffy sub) FW Phil Y'h Re discussion: It wasn't that the team adopted a defensive philosophy due to Bulpin/McMenemy; the team had long prioritized defense over attack since the main objective back then wasn't to win, it was to not get embarrassed. Sad but true. As shown in the above lineup, we've put up very defensive formations before. Of course, cred to Macca and the boys for being able to put the blueprint into work. But Caslib didn't to that bad himself; he had to suffer from Aly's injury in the 2005 Cup proper, but still managed to lead the Azkals to a goalless draw against MYA which prevented them from reaching the semis. vimjonk: It also befuddles me why Weiss likes to switch around players' positions. Some work (Schrock), some don't (Mulders IMHO, JYH, Jonsson). Although the Azkals have long experimented putting players in unnatural positions successfully (Borromeo from ST to CB, Gier from RB to CB, JYH from RB to RM, Caligdong from ST to LM). xyz1000: It was more of the Azkals (specifically the back four) settling down after getting rattled 2-0.

I'm not sure but I thought I caught commentator Bob saying that Chieffy scored two goals in the match before he actually scored the second goal on the delayed broadcast. Oh well...

Thanks for the review guys, especially the exhaustive analysis by Wiking. Unfortunately I couldn't catch the game bec. I had to go to work so all the comments here is appreciated.
Yup HK has a caretaker coach. They have been evaluating 4 candidates incl. an English coach who used to be the coach of the English U-20 team. They are taking this tournament seriously though as they want to improve their FIFA rankings so they brought the best team possible minus 5 mainland Chinese players(who obtained HK passports) that were not given visas by Taiwan. So I would say we did relatively well considering half our team are part of the U-23 team. HK are also in the process of naturalizing a Ghana player Godfrey Karikari(sounds like a Filipino dish) who is a leading scorer in the HK Premier League, but did not finish in time to join the team.
Yup expect even more biased officiating tomorrow with the home team playing. It is nothing new. I see that here in CONCACAF a lot when the US visits the central american countries. I just hope they don't give a spurious foul in the penalty box to an Azkal resulting in a penalty for Taiwan. Hopefully it is not as bad as the referees they had in the Jones Cup in basketball when they clearly favored the Chinese Taipei team in all their matches in such a obvious manner that some teams nearly walked out.

LONG TENG CUP: Azkals tackle host Taiwanese Sunday night By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer KAOHSIUNG—Their goal breached three times Friday, the Philippine Azkals try to address their defensive lapses Sunday night when they tangle with host Chinese Taipei in the Long Teng Cup at the National Stadium here. Struggling with new combinations, the Azkals settled for a 3-3 draw against defending champion Hong Kong Friday night after erasing a two-goal deficit to seize a 3-2 lead until the 86th minute when the defending champions equalized. Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo, who played alongside newcomer Oliver Poetschke at central defense, stressed the need for an improved defensive effort from the squad. “Our defending (against Hong Kong) was all over the place,” said Borromeo. “But at least there’s familiarity now. We know how we will play together. We can’t let Chinese Taipei get that confidence unlike against Hong Kong.” Leaving so many gaps at the back and with a passing game that left much to be desired, the Azkals were pinned to the ropes early as Hong Kong struck with two early goals. Two clinical goals by Chieffy Caligdong after the ice-breaker from the penalty spot by Phil Younghusband in the 31st minute put the Azkals in prime position to pull off the win against a team ranked 10 places higher than them. Caligdong, despite limping off in the 78th minute after feeling pain on his right knee, said he’ll be ready against the Taiwanese. “I just needed to rest. As long as I can bear the pain, I’ll always be ready to give my all for the country,” said the 28-year-old Air Force winger. With only a point to show because of the draw, the Azkals are left with no recourse but to grab maximum points against the hosts, who blanked Macau, 3-0, in their first match Friday night. “We will be in a very good position to win the tournament if we win tomorrow,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss. The German coach hinted at playing a more conservative style against the Taiwanese side, which he said plays a fluid attack. “We will sit a little a bit deeper (on defense) and will be looking for counter-attacks,” Weiss said. “I hope everybody steps up, especially in terms of alertness and concentration.” Team manager Dan Palami said settling down defensively early on will be key for the Azkals. “Even with the unfamiliarity of the players, playing compact 4-4-2 will allow us to be more confident because everybody knows that basic defensive structure,” said Palami. Changes are expected in the starting roster for the Azkals with Jason de Jong sitting out the match after getting sent off in injury time against Hong Kong. Goalkeeper Roland Muller, who made a string of fine saves against Hong Kong, is expected to keep his spot in the starting XI just like Caligdong, Borromeo, Phil and James Younghusband, Carli de Murga and Angel Guirado. sports.inquirer.net/18559/long-teng-cup-azkals-tackle-host-taiwanese-tonightLooks like they are trying to address the problems on defence.

The character of our Azkal team will be tested today if the expected big home audience should materialize. There are a few things in our favor though. I think, psychologically, Taiwan will feel itself the underdog seeing the performance of the Azkals almost beating the favored team a few days ago. Being down 0-2 in the first 22 minutes and battling back almost to win the match against the A team of HK. Even though the HK team did not have its full complement, neither did we. I'm sure Taiwan knows we had and have U23 players in our rotation and I'd guess they are suitably impressed with our team and will not take us lightly.
I'm hopeful that coach W is done with his 'experiments' and have settled on a stable starting 11. I have a feeling he will start a stronger defense with Carli staying put at RB. Oliver should be well used to the pressure now and will be adjusted properly. Matt and Aly, should they play as they did last time, should be adequate for the job if not 'rock solid'.
Jason, although not much of a factor last game will be missed for his competitive demeanor. I think Lexton Moy should be able to take his position without too much of a drop off in production, IF he manages to stay injury free. If Carli moves to fullback his spot could be taken by Gener, a position I think he is better at because of his offensive tendencies. Although I've been on his case the last few matches, I still think he can contribute, just not as a defensive fullback. He has played the midfield position and at the very least, someone is behind him other than the goalkeeper! Chieffy, if injured could be replaced by Jeff C(both left footers) although no Filipino fan would want Chieffy at the bench if he is able.
At forward Phil is Phil and I'd bet a dollar Mark will start today.
Goooooooo Azkals!!
Add: about the expected 'biased' officiating, we've got a few KEY players with yellows. I hope the officials(refs) are more professional than that, though I remain very concerned...
