bad officiating, the referee made a bad call. CT players were diving and acting to kill the time. CT was not looking to win, i think they're only looking to salvage a draw because i know if they will attack more they will get hammered by our counter-attack. CT holds the possession 57% of the time. i think they have a total of 14 attempts (7 shots on target) compared to our 13 attempts (only 3 shots on target i think). Philippines should have use more through ball rather than long ball.
Defense- Carli was good in defense, had a good tackles. same as Pötschke. Aly also played well, Neckson Leonora also had a good performance on his debut. looking forward to see this kid again.
Midfield- Matt Hartmann had some bad passes especially his long ball. Angel should attack more to help our forwards. James was doing well trying to bring the ball back, very active on the pitch. Cheffy only played in the 1st half but he could have take that goal when he was open on the left flank but he choose to dribble the ball inside the penalty box and the CTs defense caught him. Jeff Christiaens also played well, there was a time that he was on attack 1 on 1 against the keeper but he choose to pass to Phil, nice attempt by Phil but the Keeper denied it. Lexton Moy (i don't know if he played forward of midfield after subbing in for Ian)
Forwards: Ian was ineffective and always out of position, Phil always shooting the ball wide and had many bad cross. missing Misagh and Mark Hartmann, maybe they can add more offense if only subbed in.

on good things about this long teng cup even if our azkals are disappointing is that we have found ourselves some real gem on our u23 backline... With Leonora - Potchke - De Murga looks like our backline will be solid for the SEA games... But what if, let's say, di lahat available ang mga players natin tapos iba na naman ang lineup. Ano "no cohesion" na naman? "no cohesion/lack of cohesion"? I think that scapegoat is already "gasgas" na to the max as the Azkals were given ample time to prepare. What can we do? That is really the problem with PHL football... most of our player are Euro based... need to develop our local players but like Sir Dan Palami said it will take time... from the players I mentioned si leonora lang ang local or homegrown...

Xavier Chen did not play maybe because of club commitments

Well I think we can all agree that this was a very boring game to watch.. Most of the attempts on goal were wide. In terms of combination, it was dramatic. Not enough movement, lack of communication,... Guirado was very disappointing, he didn't weigh enough on the opponent's defense like he usually does. I guess he's still not fully recovered yet. I'm sure they could've gotten more out of this game if they played more offensively. Let's hope they can win the 3rd and final game! Hope to see Mark H., Lexton and Jeffrey start next game instead of Araneta, Hartmann and Chieffy (who's probably injured)
Chinese Taipei's star player Xavier Chen played yesterday for KV Mechelen and lost 1-0 against KV Kortrijk. His team has only 1 point out of their 5 last games. Despite this, I still regard Xavier Chen as one of the best RB's here in Belgium.

I think that scapegoat is already "gasgas" na to the max as the Azkals were given ample time to prepare. You did not get my sarcasm when I said the "No cohesion" statement. I'm not referring whether they homegrown talents or Fil-Fors. And definitely I highly commend the efforts of Mr. Palami for his undaunting efforts to sustained the success of Philippine football. What I meant is I'm damn so frakking damn pissed off is with that statements like "No cohesion", "Team still lacks cohesion". "Team still has no killer instinct", etc. that Weiss always bicker. Pustahan tayo yan na naman ang idadahilan nyan pag uwi nila dito sa Pinas. Kesyo may mga baguhan na naman na players sa line up nya. Kesyo madaya daw ang kalaban. Kesyo ganito-ganyan." I hate frakking lame excuses.

This time I got to see most of the game.
C.T. have big players and they were much more cohesive in their passing and in the attack buildup from the back. But just like us, they didn't have a finisher.
I noticed that our play was more defensive this time with players hanging on their side of the field even during the first half and even when challenging for the ball would've been better. Perhaps Weiss is reading this board. I can see the players' uncertainty in this defensive stance. There was a tentativeness in the play. While I am in favor of a more defensive play, the change is like a shock, like the players are not used to this system. For instance the long balls even when a run up the field would've been better. Saw this several times especially from the right side. We can string passes together. Save the long balls for those extraordinary moments.
Agree the PYH needs to have more of that killer instinct to bury that ball in the net. It doesn't help that he's a marked man, but there were times when he could've gone for a shot after fighting for position. With Weiss's formation of PYH as the target man and Angel G. just behind, the two big men are not parallel and I don't think it worked. With a formation like that there should be someone speedy just behind the big target man. Maybe Misagh, maybe one of the Hartmanns (forget who), maybe even Chieffy. If PYH and Angel G. play at the same time I'd rather see a 4-4-2 formation rather than a 4-4-1-1.
The back three or four had a good showing this time. As did of course Mueller the goalkeeper.
As for the crowd, I think the Azkals can get a much bigger draw than what Taiwan can offer. Either in the Philippines or somewhere in the Middle East. It's sad to see so many empty seats when I'm sure the Azkals can draw 10x that many people.
As for the officiating, I didn't see any glaring bias one way or the other. The C.T. players dove more.
As for the coaching, it's an area where there really needs to be improvement. Weiss has the good fortune to have this job without worrying about rabid fans asking for him to be fired (we're not at that stage yet. Maybe those in these boards.), and I have noticed him back off from reckless offensive play, but there still needs to be improvement. The team is more cohesive, no doubt. That's his doing. But I still believe that more could be achieved with the players we have.

Well, I haven't seen them play before, but I've read that CT has a very fluid attacking style with copious use of the flanks on attack. Weiss employed the right strategy to foil that. The weakness of our play yesterday was the inability to maintain possession on the counterattack/attack. CT was thought of as a more dangerous opponent than HK. On defense we've been introduced to some rising stars in the U23 squad and Aly was great. The midfield and strikers were having a tough time passing around the quick CT defenders and yeah, CT used some less than savory tactics to their advantage. They were great on the offside trap though and we couldn't find an answer for that.

Interesting quotes by dan palami on twitter prior to the game.
First I presume was pertaining to Mark Hartmann comments on twitter which landed him in the doghouse: "let us all be careful what we wish for... especially on twitter."
Second was a hint of a change in tactics which we saw in the game when we adopted a counterattacking strategy with plenty of long balls.
cedelph described it as radical, although dan said interesting is more appropriate.
As for my thoughts on the game:
Philippines only used 2 subs while Taipei had 5. Very disappointing.
Several players were given their debut incl. U-23 player Leonora on defence and Lexton Moy at mid, the first of whom was a pleasant surprise at how good he played. Lexton did okay as well but his short time on the field was inconclusive.
I feel we could have done better with our substitution patterns with Bahadoran and Mark Hartmann left sitting on the bench when they could have helped in the 2nd half. I was a little surprised that Coach Weiss adopted a counterattacking strategy this time around, considering we were facing a lower ranked foe which helped our predominantly young and inexperienced defensive line a bit, but he didn't address the need for fresh legs in the 2nd half to help out on the offence which everyone was crying for.
They really missed Chieffy Caligdong who scored the brace in the first game in the 2nd half. He was playing with an injury in the first half and then taken out. I didn't realize how much energy he adds to the team until with his absence in the 2nd half, I noticed the somewhat static nature of the midfield with him being absent.
Great game for the Azkal's goalkeeper Roland Mueller. He has validated his position as #2 goalkeeper on the team.
As expected, the officiating was somewhat biased towards the home team Chinese Taipei. Too much flopping, delaying tactics and obstructive fouling by their team should have elicited another card or two.
Some positive takes we can get from this game:
Considering the primary objective of this somewhat minor tournament was to develop and evaluate our young players, I think we could say that the performance of the Under-23 players give us good hope for the SEA Games. However, compared to the preparations that our neighbors have already had for their respective U-23 teams which I have monitored, we are a little bit somewhat behind and I still feel our chances for medaling this time around is still somewhat of a long shot.

i just watched the first half of the game and was very dissapointed of the result and the way it happened. mr phil younghusband should RLY RLY practice SHOOTING. thats his big problem. accuracy. i hope we will win at least the last match and also play well.
but with our A-squad im sure we would have won this tournament. schröcky alone would have been a big x-factor.

Oh, so much for the most "boring" match of this tourney. Thanks for all your insights, guys.
I'm very disappointed with Chinese Taipei, because they wasted most of the time defending here, defending there. Like it was a tug-of-war that will not end because everyone was pulling the rope at the same amount of force. Skipper Chen Po-liang was too much to stomach in because he liked to engulf our attacking side at the same time trying to disturb the central defense. Good thing our skipper Aly B was thinking a lot more carefully this time. The Lo twins were like "playing dirty" most of the time just getting their heads over Phil YH and Guirado. And I don't like their GK, he wants his defenders to crush the wings when they really can't.
I commend Mueller to be my man of the match this time. Defense-wise, he did an excellent job keeping the defense together while CT was getting more compact on offensive attempts. Aly B and Poetschke did excellent as well to minimize any potential damage. I was really frustrated by Phil's lackluster performance now, and Chieffy is dearly missed. We can't blame Marky Hartmann being stuck in the doghouse but he is badly needed next game.
Let's see then this Tuesday against Macau. I hope it won't end in a draw or a very embarrassing upset.

... What can we do? That is really the problem with PHL football... most of our player are Euro based... need to develop our local players but like Sir Dan Palami said it will take time... from the players I mentioned si leonora lang ang local or homegrown... That's the problem with almost all National Team. They are only together for a relatively short period of time. It's why there are some sucessfull football coaches/managers that have difficulty(hesitant) transitioning from club management to NT management. The success of Spain last WC was attributed to some extent by the familiarity of their player in their club play especially the midfield (Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta). del Bosque do not like to start Fabregas(maybe, their most talented MF) because it would disrupt the MF interplay. Even the current Italian NT first XI is somewhat a combination of club players if you would break-up their line-up into defense-midfield-attack.
