Official Lineup Announced Today: roymondous.wordpress.com/2011/06/07/the-23-azkals-to-face-sri-lanka-in-the-world-cup-qualifiers/THE 23 AZKALS TO FACE SRI LANKA IN THE WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS Posted by Roy on June 7, 2011 · 5 Comments The Philippine national team have released the 23 man squad to play in the First Round of the World Cup Qualifiers against Sri Lanka. With a mixture of experienced players and new Azkals the team look to build on their recent success, qualifying for the Semi-Final of the Suzuki Cup and qualifying from the AFC Challenge Cup Group Stage for the first time in their history. Here is the list of players, courtesy of the lovely Araceli Socorro S. Estose: Goalkeepers: Neil Etheridge and Edward Sacapano Defenders: Aly Borromeo, Rob Gier, Stephan Schrock, Roel Gener, Anton Del Rosario, Ray Jonsson, Jason Sabio and Dennis Cagara Midfielders: Manuel Ott, James Younghusband, Jerry Lucena, Emelio ‘Chieffy’ Caligdong, James Rochlitz, Paul Mulders, Ricardo Becite and Nestorio Margarse Forwards: Ian Araneta, Phil Younghusband, Angel Guirado, Misagh Bahadoran and Nate Burkey After the recent loss to the UFL All Stars, reported here as the Payatas and Kasiglahan kids watched the Azkals for the first game, the Azkals have faced more criticism than usual. However it must be remembered that the team have been trying out different players in positions, trying to let the latest Azkals settle into the squad and even experimenting with new formations. Indeed it’s likely that the Azkals will field the 4-3-3 that they used for most of the match against the UFL All Stars. Dominating much of possession there is a lot to be excited about with the Azkals. James Younghusband had a great game in central midfield with some pin-point accuracy and a few more friendly games would really help the team. It seems Coach Weiss is playing a system more akin to the Arsenal and Barcelona style of Total Football. Developed in the 1970s by FIFA Manager of the Century Rinus Michels, Total Football makes positions fluid, any player can cover for other players as defenders will move forward and play in midfield and even attack. Arsenal and Barcelona, however, have made the defence more fixed while their attackive players switch position. This allows the defence to be more organised while the attack has a fluid danger making players difficult to mark. With Chieffy, P. Younghusband and Burkey all switching roles frequently during the last game once the team is used to the new system it could lead to devastating effects. Predicted line-up and formation: Etheridge Schrock Gier Borromeo Cagara J. Younghusband Lucena Jonsson P. Younghusband Guirado Caligdong Tickets sold out quickly for the July 3 match, within two hours the P200 and P300 had all gone. As tweeted earlier by myself on @roymondous, where you can find the latest Azkals news and tweetcasted Azkals games, it just goes to prove that the Philippines have become a heavyweight in South-East Asian football and could fill a huge stadium like Indonesia and Malaysia ____________________________ I am not sure if this is the final lineup as there are players from Europe that still need to tryout for the team, but I am assuming that those players like Reichelt, Potschke, etc. still don't have their passport available but will be considered for future games. As for Burkey and Sabio, Coach Weiss probably felt they were better options than the less experienced players in the bench. They will not be part of the starting lineup and will only serve as cover.

on a separate article.. www.soccercentral.ph/news/azkals-23-man-wcq-lineup-unveiled[shadow=red,left,300]Azkals 23-man WCQ Lineup Unveiled[/shadow]by John Paul Manahan on June 8, 2011 The 23-man lineup due of the Philippine National Team has been unveiled yesterday evening. Following weeks of tryouts and trainings of the players that was held at the Alabang Country Club and at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, the following players were selected as noted by Araceli Estose: Player position and last club played, unless stated otherwise also noted 1. Neil Etheridge - Goalkeeper, Fulham FC 2. Manuel Ott - Midfielder, FC Ingolstadt 04 II 3. Robert Gier - Defender, Ascot United 4. Angel Aldeguer Guirado - Midfielder, Club Deportiva Ronda 5. Ray Jonsson - Defender, Grindavik 6. Jerry Lucena - Midfielder, AGF Aarhus 7. Stephan Schrock - Defender, Greuther Fürth 8. Ian Araneta - Striker, Air Force Rider 9. Alexander Borromeo - Defender, Kaya Cignal FC 10. Emelio Caligdong - Left Wing Midfielder/Forward, Air Force Rider 11. Anton del Rosario - Defender, Kaya Cignal FC 12. Roel Gener - Defender, Army Fritz and Macziol IBM 13. Nestorio Margarse - Midfielder, Army Fritz and Macziol IBM 14. Edward Sacapano - Goalkeeper, Army Fritz and Macziol IBM 15. Misagh Bahadoran - Striker, Global Smartmatic 16. James Rochlitz - Midfielder, Loyola Marymount Athletics 17. Nathaniel Burkey - Midfielder, Kaya Cignal FC (starting next season) 18. Jason Sabio - Defender, Rocket City United 19. Ricardo Becite - Midfielder, Army Fritz and Macziol IBM 20. James Younghusband - Right Wing Midfielder, Smart San Beda FC 21. Phil Younghusband - Striker, Smart San Beda FC 22. Paul Mulders - Attacking Midfielder, ADO Den Haag (starting next season) 23. Dennis Cagara - Defender, Randers FC The 23-man roster can be subdivided into four sub-groups of two keepers, eight defenders, nine midfielders and four attackers. The strength of team lies with its defense, obviously bolstered by the presence of what I call the "Eurofenders" - the group of defenders / defensive midfielders who are based in Europe (Jonsson, Gier, Cagara, Lucena, Schrock). This is the core of the AFF Suzuki Cup that pretty much got the Philippines back onto the eyes of the Filipino public. The key would be for the team to be able to score goals, something apparent in the international tournaments. That puts pressure on our attackers and the midfielders who will feed them to be able to maximize the opportunities being presented. Paul Mulders was a late addition to the roster. He was just given his Philippine passport recently, hence was able to join the 23-man squad. Previous reports had him initially not included in the final squad. The Dutch-based Filipino had arrived to the Philippines just to tryout for the team and was seen on the bench when the Azkals faced the UFL All-Star XI last Sunday in the University of Makati football field. Notable omission from the 23-man lineup is midfielder Simon Greatwich, who has been asked to focus on the upcoming Southeast Asian Games to be held in Indonesia later this year. The SEA Games will be composed of an Under-23 roster, with another notable missing name from the AFF Suzuki Cup, Jason de Jong, said to be joining the Under-23 along with Kaya Cignal's Yannick Tuason who earned his first international cap during the AFC Challenge Cup Group Stages against Myanmar in a 1-1 draw.Payatas FC and Kasiglahan FC coach Roy Moore also gave his insights regarding the selection. He remarked that Coach Michael Weiss is keen on a playing style similar to 'Total Football' that coined by Rinus Michel and able to define Johan Cruyff's play in his days at Ajax Amsterdam and FC Barcelona during the 1970's, and is currently made famous by the current iteration of FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team. Another blog posed the idea of merging the concepts of Weiss in the Challenge Cup with McMenemy in the Suzuki Cup. The national team is set to go to Duren, Germany next week to continue their training before heading to Sri Lanka for the first leg of the World Cup Qualifiers on June 29. The second leg will be on July 3 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. -----------------------------------

If was picking, I'd go for S. Greatwich over Becite .... haven't seen that guy used, while Simon's been proving his value. So even if only subbing in, at least you are getting someone you have seen do something before. But then again, what do I know??

Simon Greatwich, on the other hand, is not part of the Germany bound WC roster because he is said to be the captain of the U-23 squad bound for Palembang, Indonesia for the AFF U-23 championship this July (That is if the Indonesian football association won't get suspended as previously reported). He will be joined there by Yannick Tuason, Jason De Jong, Christopher Camcam, Paolo Pascual and Jose Porteria among others.

But perhaps with Weiss already with an ideal first XI and key bench players in min, he was looking for flexibility in the line-up. One thing about the Armed Forces players, Roel Gener is an excellent example, is that they are able to play multiple positions. These type of players could come handy in tournaments and some key situations.

New faces to beef up Azkals in GermanyBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated June 08, 2011 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines - Moving forward after a numbing 3-4 loss to the United Football League (UFL) All-Stars in a recent test match, the Philippine Azkals look ahead to playing more competitive tune-up games as a “complete” team in next week’s training camp in Germany. “We need more games like that which are played with high pressure,” team manager Dan Palami said after an erratic Azkals dropped the game serving as part of buildup for their Fifa World Cup Asian Qualifier against Sri Lanka on June 29 in Colombo and July 3 in Manila. “We learned one lesson in that game – you get punished for your mistake,” he said, referring to a couple defensive lapses that UFL converted into goals. Palami said that friendly match was more for sake of the new recruits such as Fil-Am striker Nathan Burkey, Fil-Am centerback James Rochlitz, Fil-Iranian Misagh Bahadora, and Fil-Dutch attacking midfield Paul Mulders. “So they’ll be exposed to higher-level games (with the team),” he said, adding that only four of the team’s starters actually played in the duel with UFL. The new faces will join Neil Etheridge, Manuel Ott, Rob Geir, Angel Aldeguer Guirado, Roy Jonsson, Jerry Lucena, Stephan Schrock, Ian Araneta, Aly Borromeo, Chieffy Caligdong, Anton del Rosario, Roel Gener, Nestor Margarse, Edward Sacapano, Jason Sabio, Ricardo Becite, Phil and James Younghusband and Dennis Cagara in the Phl XI roster set to hold camp in Germany. Europe-based stalwarts like Fil-Spanish Aldeguer Guirado and Fil-British Geir, who are absent in the Manila training sessions, will head straight to Germany for the Azkals’ camp slated June 12-26. While there, the 23-man crew will play four to five matches against German clubs, working on their cohesion and chemistry at the same time. “We’re looking forward to training camp in Germany and playing against second, third division teams. Definitely this will help us considering we lack competitions in the Philippines. More competitions can only make you better,” said co-skipper Borromeo. Swiss goalkeeping coach Pascal Zuberbuhler, according to Palami, will also hook up with the team in Germany. “He couldn’t come to Manila, having just signed with a Swiss club, which might need his services there. He would just meet us in Germany,” Palami said. The Azkals will be encamped in Germany for two weeks and fly straight to Colombo for the first leg. Tough tuneup matches for national booters3:26 am | Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 MANILA—Determined to whip his squad into the best possible form, Philippine Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss has lined up four tough tuneup matches for the national side in their two-week training camp in Duren, Germany. The Azkals will be facing a German second and third division sides and two other formidable foes as they step up their preparations for the 2014 Fifa World Cup Qualifying first round clash against Sri Lanka on June 29 and July 3. “It should be a stronger team,” Weiss told the Inquirer when asked to compare his squad from the team he has now than the one that hurdled the AFC Challenge Cup qualifying stage last March. “In Germany, we go for cohesion, we go for team spirit, better compactness and not to be vulnerable on the defensive end so much and then work on our usual offensive style,” Weiss added. First up for the Azkals is a clash with a selection team based in Duren composed of fourth and fifth division players in the area on June 15, three days after leaving Manila. The team, Weiss said, played top German club Bayern Munich recently and barely lost 3-4. The Azkals will also play an Under-19 squad from Bern on June 17. Weiss said the Bern side beat their counterparts from Borrusia Dortmund in a friendly last month. The match against second Bundesliga team FC Ingolstadt, the club of Filipino-German Manny Ott, on June 22 has been described by Weiss as the “peak match” of the camp. The Azkals wrap up their preparations on June 24 against newly-promoted German third division team Darmstadt Achtung 98. Weiss will have the compliment of a full lineup in the Germany camp with players like Filipino-German Stephan Schrock, Fil-Icelandic defender Ray Jonnson and Fil-Spanish Angel Aldeguer and Fil-Dutch Paul Mulders, who is still processing his Filipino passport. The Azkals’ defensive frailties were exposed in a 3-4 loss to a United Football League side last Sunday but Weiss said only four to five players from the team that played in the friendly will be part of the starting XI for the Sri Lanka match. Fil-American striker Nathaniel Burkey and Fil-Iranian Misagh Bahadoran are among the newcomers in the team, which will miss retired striker Yanti Barsales. The core of the team that hurdled the qualifying stage of the AFC Challenge Cup has also been kept with skippers Aly Borromeo and Chieffy Caligdong leading the side. Also joining the Germany camp are Fil-Danish Jerry Lucena, Fil-British Rob Gier, Phil and James Younghusband, Jason Sabio and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and homegrown players Ian Araneta, Roel Gener, Nestorio Margarse, Ricardo Becite, Edward Sacapano and Anton del Rosario. Weiss said Filipino-Danish defender Dennis Cagara is still doubtful for the camp as he looks for a new club, following his release from Randers FC. sports.inquirer.net/4633/azkals-coach-training-in-germany-a-good-respite-from-manila%E2%80%99s-distractions?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitterAzkals coach: German camp a good respite from Manila’s distractions By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 9:47 pm | Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 1 Share1 MANILA, Philippines – Philippine football team coach Michael Weiss is looking forward to putting the Azkals in a tighter leash when they undergo a two-week camp in Germany starting Monday. “We will not put them into prison, but we will have control over them,” Weiss said Tuesday night before leaving for Germany to make the necessary preparations for the camp in Duren, a city near the Dutch border three hours away from Frankfurt. “We need to control if we want to get to the next level. They can’t do strange stuff in Germany. They are young players, and there will always be temptations in a city like Manila.” Weiss earlier rued the lack of focus of the team in Manila, where several players have been pre-occupied with a myriad of non-football related activities. But Weiss believes his team’s mindset is where it should be now three weeks before the 2014 Fifa World Cup Qualifying first round match against Sri Lanka. Weiss said the training in Germany would be enough to address chinks in the Azkals’ armor that were exposed in the 3-4 exhibition loss to a United Football League side last Sunday. “There’s no reason to make a drama out of it,” he said, referring to the loss. “We know we have a long way to go.” “We lack the compactness in midfield but with the players that we will have in camp, I’m sure we will solve our problems,” said the German coach, who expected Fil-Dutch midfielder Paul Mulders to make an immediate impact in the team. The 30-year-old Mulders, who will see action for ADO Den Haag in the Dutch first division, honed his skills at Ajax, which is known for developing the Netherlands top players like Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van der Vaart. The Azkals, who leave for Germany on Sunday, will close camp in Manila today, before launching their fund-raising “We Believe” campaign at the Trinoma Activity Center on Friday. Linking up with the squad in Germany are Europe-based standouts Ray Jonnson, Manny Ott, Rob Gier, Stephan Schrock, Angel Aldeguer Guirado, Jerry Lucena and Dennis Cagara. “We are now at 65 percent,” Weiss said. “We have to grow together. It will be a tough challenge to play strong teams in Germany and I beg for understanding if we lose there but it will help us to progress.” Weiss is confident of overcoming Sri Lanka with the squad that he has now, which has been considered as the strongest assembled in years. “But the cohesion must be good,” he added.

Good to hear Weiss mention the lack of compactness in midfield, he probably has been reading our discussions on these boards, haha!

This are good teams they will be playing with in Germany. I think what we should be looking for is improvement in the way the team plays especially on defense and on achieving team chemistry, rather than concentrating on results(as long as they keep it close) especially since this will be the first time that the full team with the new players will get together. With the caliber of new players that are coming in, there is no reason why we can't be competitive as long as they keep a compact and organized defense.

www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=694446&publicationSubCategoryId=69Azkals to address defensive flaw in training By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated June 09, 2011 MANILA, Philippines - Learning from their recent test match, the Philippine Azkals will work on gaining cohesion and beefing up their central midfield defense when they go into deeper, more concentrated training for their Fifa World Cup Asian Qualifiers match against Sri Lanka. Azkals coach Michael Weiss said the defensive deficiency that was evident in their 3-4 loss to the United Football League (UFL) selection last Sunday would be fully addressed during their two-week training camp in Duren, Germany beginning next week. “In the next couple of weeks, we have to begin improvising in central midfield defensive position,” Weiss said after conducting practice at the Rizal Memorial pitch Tuesday and also announcing the final 23-man lineup for the Sri Lanka first leg on June 29 in Colombo andJuly 3 in Manila. “We didn’t have cohesion yet because we’ve been focusing more on physical preparations here in the Philippines to get ready for Germany. That will be the main focus there; cohesion, tactical, technical training and the match experience will all come in Germany,” he added. Weiss is confident the Azkals will develop a more potent midfield, with the addition of Fil-Dutch Paul Mulders, a 30-year-old veteran from the Netherlands’ Premier League club Ado-den Haag. He planed in last Friday and immediately impressed the coaching staff, earning ticket to Germany and Sri Lanka. “We have problems switching from offense to defense; we’re not compact in central midfield. But now we have a very experienced player coming in, Paul Maulders, who will fit in well in defense together with (Fil-Danish MF Jerry) Lucena and maybe another one. “I think we can be very compact in the central midfield, and the players in midfield and side, (Chieffy) Caligdong and James (Younghusband), will also switch in because we had problems switching from offense to defense. That’s what we’ll work on, he added. Moreover, Weiss said they will also “focus on set pieces, ball circulation and ball possession in order to put the opponents under early pressure.”
