www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=694446&publicationSubCategoryId=69Azkals to address defensive flaw in training By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated June 09, 2011 MANILA, Philippines - Learning from their recent test match, the Philippine Azkals will work on gaining cohesion and beefing up their central midfield defense when they go into deeper, more concentrated training for their Fifa World Cup Asian Qualifiers match against Sri Lanka. Azkals coach Michael Weiss said the defensive deficiency that was evident in their 3-4 loss to the United Football League (UFL) selection last Sunday would be fully addressed during their two-week training camp in Duren, Germany beginning next week. “In the next couple of weeks, we have to begin improvising in central midfield defensive position,” Weiss said after conducting practice at the Rizal Memorial pitch Tuesday and also announcing the final 23-man lineup for the Sri Lanka first leg on June 29 in Colombo andJuly 3 in Manila. “We didn’t have cohesion yet because we’ve been focusing more on physical preparations here in the Philippines to get ready for Germany. That will be the main focus there; cohesion, tactical, technical training and the match experience will all come in Germany,” he added. Weiss is confident the Azkals will develop a more potent midfield, with the addition of Fil-Dutch Paul Mulders, a 30-year-old veteran from the Netherlands’ Premier League club Ado-den Haag. He planed in last Friday and immediately impressed the coaching staff, earning ticket to Germany and Sri Lanka. “We have problems switching from offense to defense; we’re not compact in central midfield. But now we have a very experienced player coming in, Paul Maulders, who will fit in well in defense together with (Fil-Danish MF Jerry) Lucena and maybe another one. “I think we can be very compact in the central midfield, and the players in midfield and side, (Chieffy) Caligdong and James (Younghusband), will also switch in because we had problems switching from offense to defense. That’s what we’ll work on, he added. Moreover, Weiss said they will also “focus on set pieces, ball circulation and ball possession in order to put the opponents under early pressure.” Hmm, looks like Weiss may have indeed been reading these boards, hehe!

Younghusband in tip-top shapeSTRIKER Phil Younghusband said Tuesday that his injury has fully healed and he’ll be at his best when he joins the Philippine Azkals when the team leaves for Germany, its final stop before it battles the Sri Lankans. “My legs are okay now. I have no more injuries which will keep me away from the team. I will be ready for the game against Sri Lanka,” said Younghusband, who took time out from his the team’s morning scrimmages to be at the launch of RFM’s new energy drink, VitWater Power, which he endorses. The 26-year-old Fil-British later joined his teammates at the Rizal Memorial Track Football Stadium pitch in Vito Cruz, Manila. Younghusband has rejoined the team for almost a month now after being sidelined by a hamstring injury he suffered last March when the Philippine Azkals lost to the Mongolian Blue Wolves, 1-2, in the second game of a two-game, home-and-away qualifying matches in the 2012 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup. His injury prevented him from joining the team in the Group stages of the 2012 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in Myanmar. Younghusband hopes to keep his spot in the team when coach Hans Michael Weiss announces the composition of the national squad seeing action against Sri Lanka in their home-and-away World Cup qualifying matches on June 29 and July 3. Azkals to hold 2-week training camp in GermanyBY BONG PEDRALVEZ NATIONAL football team manager Dan Palami expects a more focused, disciplined and determined Philippine team to emerge from its two-week training camp kicking off in Duren, Germany next week. "I’m quite optimistic with the dividends we will get from this training camp," said Palami of the final phase of the Azkals’ build-up before they tackle Sri Lanka in the opening leg of their Asian World Cup qualifying series on June 29 in Colombo. "I expect the team to finally focus on what to be done, improve teamwork and play a high level of football," added Palami of the training stint to be conducted by German coach Michael Weiss, who went ahead last Wednesday to set up the camp. "Finally, we will be complete," noted Palami, referring to the team’s European-based regulars such as Rob Gier, Ray Jonsson, Jerry Lucena and Angel Aldeguer Guirado plus Fil-Germans Manuel Ott and Stephan Schrock, who are all expected to join the team in Germany. The fine-tuning stage, he said, will be a rigorous workout for Weiss’ charges who are set to face four strong German sides, including a Duren selection that narrowly lost 3-4 to German Division 1 club Bayern Munich two weeks ago. "This just goes to show how tough the opposition they will be up against in Germany." Asked what he thought of the coaching staff’s selection bound for Sri Lanka, Palami said: "I gave them a lot of leeway in making the choices and only enter when they cannot agree among themselves." Among those set to make their debut for the nationals are Filipino-American Nathaniel Burkey and and Manila-based Fil-Iranian Misagh Bahadoran, strikers who made the cut after nearly a month of trying out with the Azkals. With the retirement of veteran forward Yanti Barsales and Ian Araneta still recovering from a calf injury, Burkey and Bahadoran will reinforce the team’s attack, Palami said. "He (Burkey) handles the ball well, he has the height at 6-2. May moves siya," the team manager said of the 26-year-old Fil-Am. "Misagh can weave around defenders but he has to keep away from the futsal mentality," Palami said of the player who plays for team APT Global in the UFL and has suited up for the national futsal team. Dropped from the roster was Fil-Brit midfielder Simon Greatwich, 22, who saw action for the nationals in last year’s Suzuki Cup and in the recent AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers. Azkals coach confident of winningBy FRANCIS SANTIAGO June 9, 2011, 11:05pm MANILA, Philippines — German coach Michael Weiss said he feels more excited than pressured despite his unenviable task of making sure the Philippine football team will do well in the qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Cup. It will be his biggest assignment since taking the coaching helm of the national football team four months ago, but Weiss said he thrives under pressure. ”There’s no pressure,” he said, though admitting that the qualifying tourney, where they will meet Sri Lanka in the first round on June 29 in Colombo, is very significant for the country. Much has changed since the Philippines last took part in the World Cup qualifier in 2001. The stands were empty when the Azkals hosted a qualifying match against Laos (1-1) at the 10,000-seater Philsports Arena in Pasig. Ten years after, things are going to be different given the tremendous popularity and expectation from the Azkals. Proof is that game tickets to their home match against Sri Lanka at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on July 3 were sold out in two hours. ”Everybody is excited about this, and I know what this tournament means for the Philippines.” Weiss said. “Football is only starting to get recognized so we need every win to keep it.” The Azkals are set to leave for Germany on Sunday for a couple of tune up matches for their first-round match against Sri Lanka on June 29. “We can expect to win but we should not underestimate them,” said Weiss, adding that Sri Lanka is not taking the game lightly and is going to South Korea for a couple of tune up matches. Considering that the Azkals have never played Sri Lanka before, Weiss said they don’t plan to be too aggressive and will just counter whatever their South Asian rivals bring to the table. “But we have to have cohesion first. That will be the main focus in Germany: cohesion, tactical, technical training,” Weiss said. Link: www.mb.com.ph/articles/321987/azkals-coach-confident-winning

Philippine Azkals ready for Sri Lanka, says PalamiBy Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 4:30 am | Saturday, June 11th, 2011 MANILA—Just like in its international campaigns during the past year, the Philippine football team will be armed and ready for battle in its most important match yet. This was the assurance of Azkals manager Dan Palami, who said that the training camp in Duren, Germany will be the key to their success against Sri Lanka in the 2014 Fifa World Cup Qualifying first round meeting. “We’re not taking any chances against Sri Lanka,” said Palami Wednesday night during his birthday bash, which also turned out to be a testimonial dinner for retiring national player Yanti Barsales. Palami, however, refused to make any predictions against a Sri Lankan team which remains an unknown entity for the Azkals. “The best we could do is prepare the team the best way we can. I am confident, but Sri Lanka is also preparing for us,” said Palami, the man credited for the national team’s rise to prominence. “I will only make a prediction as soon as I see how the team plays in Germany,” said Palami, who called the 3-4 loss to the United Football League All-Stars last Sunday as a good learning experience for the squad. The Azkals leave tomorrow for Duren, where other players like Stephan Schrock, Manny Ott, Rob Gier, Ray Jonnson, Dennis Cagara, Angel Guirado and Jerry Lucena are expected to link up with the team. Azkals coach Michael Weiss disclosed that Sri Lanka will be holding camp in Korea in preparation for the match against the Azkals. Azkals won’t call off tripBy FRANCIS SANTIAGO June 10, 2011, 11:06pm MANILA, Philippines — Team manager Dan Palami said several measures are in place to ensure the Philippine football team will be protected from the E. Coli outbreak plaguing Germany. The Philippine Azkals are set to leave for Duren tomorrow for a two-week training camp serving as the final phase of their preparation for their FIFA World Cup qualifying first round match against Sri Lanka on June 29. Reports said death toll from the bacteria outbreak, which was traced to Hamburg area in northern Germany, has climbed 30 and affected 2,900 people in 12 countries. Although Duren is far from Hamburg, about 290 kilometers apart, Palami said they are leaving no stones unturned to make sure the food the players will eat are bacteria-free. “We made an agreement with the organizers to ensure the food will be safe,” said Palami, who turned 41 on Thursday. The German Football Association (DFB) is partly sponsoring the Azkals’ camp, which include four exhibition matches against formidable second and third division German club teams. “I heard the bacteria came from vegetables. It’s quite alarming, but I know team officials will make sure the food is safe. We will also be extra careful in picking the food we will eat,” striker Ian Araneta said after the send off luncheon for the Azkals hosted by ABS-CBN in its compound in Quezon City Friday. In a bid to draw support from fans and drum up their important match against Sri Lanka in Colombo, a fund-raising campaign, dubbed as “Webelieve,” was launched Friday afternoon in Trinoma. Palami, the low-key godfather credited for the renaissance of football in the country, said they hope to draw financial support from the campaign. Germany's E. Coli no threat to AzkalsBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated June 11, 2011 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines - A major earthquake in Japan the last time they trained abroad didn’t break the Philippine Azkals’ spirit. An E. Coli outbreak in Germany won’t either. The Azkals leave for Germany early Sunday, confident they would meet their training goals and undaunted by the bacterial outbreak that has affected Germany and other parts of Europe. “Magandang preparation ito para sa amin; magkakaroon kami ng four matches doon, sabi ni coach (Micheal) Weiss. Sigurado ako na matinding bugbugan at training ito (This will be a good preparation for us. We’ll play four matches in Germany and I’m sure this will be a tough stint),” said Ian Araneta. The Azkals would hold camp in Duren town for two weeks beginning June 12 then fly straight to Colombo, Sri Lanka on June 26, three days ahead of the first leg of their Fifa World Cup Asian qualifiers duel with Sri Lanka. They would be heading to Germany in the middle of the E. Coli outbreak linked to contaminated salad vegetables. “Hindi naman kami papupuntahin doon kung walang kasiguruhan ang kaligtasan namin (I’m sure we won’t be sent there if they can’t assure our safety),” said Araneta. “Pero para sure, babantayan na rin namin ang kakainin namin doon (Just to be sure, we’ll still watch what we’ll eat there).” According the World Health Organization, 2,086 cases of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli (EHEC) infection and eight fatalities have been reported in Germany as of June 8, as well as 722 cases of Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), including 18 fatalities. Germany’s Robert Koch Institute has noted an overall decreasing trend in the number of cases. Moreover, the deadly E. Coli outbreak, according to European Union Health Commissioner John Dalli, is limited to areas around the northern city of Hamburg, some 389 kilometers from Duren. Team manager Dan Palami said they have made arrangements with authorities in Duren to safeguard the Azkals’s health. “We’ve been informed before of the epidemic in Germany and we’ve made arrangements with the organizers (of the camp) to ensure that the food we eat will be safe,” Palami said. Weiss said Duren, a town of 120,000 people near the Dutch border, is free from E. Coli, and presents an ideal training hub. “It’s peaceful, players can have coffee and do things without distraction. There’s good training facilities, good food, no problem with the virus, no case of the virus in Europe, and the weather is hot similar to Manila. The best condition for training camp where we can focus on what we’re supposed to do,” Weiss said. This will be the first out-of-the-country training camp for the Azkals since they encamped in quake and tsunami-hit Japan for their AFC Challenge Cup gig against Mongolia last March. Azkals switch to Pacquiao modeBy FRANCIS SANTIAGO June 11, 2011, 6:22pm MANILA, Philippines — Fil-Iranian winger Misagh Bahadoran, one of the national football team's new recruits, admitted that training in the past couple of weeks had been a hellish experience, but he’s not complaining. At one point, the 24-year-old dentistry graduate from Centro Escolar University vomited after an exhausting running drill presided by German coach Hans Michael Weiss. But the Azkals, training for their first-round World Cup qualifying match against Sri Lanka on June 29, are not taking any chances. As they arrive in Frankfurt, Germany tonight, the Azkals expect their training to go a notch harder. The Azkals will stay in Duren for a two-week training camp which will serve as the final phase of their preparation. Team manager Dan Palami, credited for the Azkals’ phenomenal rise, said they are set “to train five to 10 times harder,” citing the training regimen of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao as inspiration. “We want to follow his (Pacquiao) principle,” said Palami, a self-confessed Pacquiao fan who watched the ring icon's latest triumph against Shane Mosley in Las Vegas. “It's really training 10 times harder so when the game comes we will be ready in speed and stamina. We want to ready the players as if they will play three straight games.” Saranggani Rep. Pacquiao is famous for his mantra: “If you train hard, the fight is easy.” The Azkals, unruffled by the E. Coli outbreak that hit Germany, will have four friendly matches against formidable second and third division German clubs. They get their first acid test when they play their first friendly match on June 15 opposite a squad composed of fourth and fifth division players based in Duren. Next will be an Under-19 squad from Bern on June 17, before taking on a second Bundesliga team FC Ingolstadt five days later. The team wraps up its preparations on June 24 against newly-promoted German third division team Darmstadt Achtung 98. The 23-man crew flying to Germany includes new recruits, Fil-Am striker Nathan Burkey, Fil-Am centerback James Rochlitz, and Fil-Dutch attacking midfielder Paul Maulders. The newbies will join goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, Manuel Ott, Rob Gier, Angel Guirado, Rey Johnsson, Jerry Lucena, Stephan Schrock, Ian Araneta, Aly Borromeo, Chieffy Caligdong, Anton Del Rosario, Roel Gener, Nestor Margarse, Edward Sacapano, Jason Sabio, Richard Becite and Phil and James Younghusband. Swiss goalkeeping coach Pascal Zuberbuhler will link up with team in Germany. Link: www.mb.com.ph/articles/322200/azkals-switch-pacquiao-mode

I wonder is this 23 man roster the final list of the WC qualifiers or just the list for the players in Germany. Will they have a chance to add the German based tryouts Reichelt, Potschke and Ingresso as well as Swedish triallist Sjoberg if they impress, prior to the Sri Lanka WC qualifier?

www.malaya.com.ph/june13/sports4.htmlFil-Danish players likely to miss RP-S’Lanka rematch BY BONG PEDRALVEZ FILIPINO-Danish players Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena may not be available for the first leg of the Philippines’ Asian World Cup qualifier against Sri Lanka on June 29 in Colombo for various reasons, according to national team manager Dan Palami. "He (Cagara) will be meeting us in Germany but I cannot confirm if he is going with us to Sri Lanka," said Palami of the 26-year-old left fullback before the team departed early yesterday morning for its two-week training camp in Duren, German that will serve as the final phase of the Azkals’ buildup. Head coach Michael Weiss left earlier last Wednesday to lay the groundwork for the camp featuring tune-up matches against four German squads, including a Duren selection that dropped a close 3-4 decision to German Division 1 ballclub Bayern Munich two weeks ago. Palami said Lucena, who previously suited up for Denmark’s Under-16, Under-17 and Under-21 national teams, has a slight foot injury. He has recently signed up with Danish Division 1 Randers FC. In his absence, Palami said Filipino-Icelander Ray Jonnson would retain his old spot "where he has been doing a good job." "Jerry (Lucena) will also be in Germany but he is nursing a foot injury so is also uncertain in Colombo," Palami said. "He might come off the bench, or will just play for us when the returns to Manila." ________________________ As usual there are inaccuracies in this column? Aren't sportswriters supposed to proofread their columns before publishing it? In the 4th paragraph, he was referring to Dennis Cagara instead of Lucena. Cagara was released by Randers FC after they got relegated and he is now looking for another team which is his main priority so he might not make it. Lucena has an achilles injury problem which prevented him from playing the last few games of his club last season. His availability depends on how fast he recovers.

If Lucena will be doubtful, who do you guys think would be the best replacement for Defensive Mid?
I say Aly Borromeo to take his place and put Anton on Centerback.

Manny Ott can play defensive mid. jonsson also played that position but was not as good as he is at left back where he should play if cagara is not available. And finally they included james rochlitz on the 23 team roster as an alternate at def mid as that is the position he plays for his college team.
