PFF plans to invite Premier League’s Aston Villa for Philippine visitKarl Decena, InterAKTV · Monday, February 4, 2013 · 6:13 pm A Premier League club might be headed to the Philippines soon. Aston Villa could visit the country during its off-season this year, according to Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta. Araneta said that the newly-built McKinley Hill Football Field in Taguig could boost the chances of the Philippines becoming one of the stops for Aston Villa’s Asian tour. The artificial pitch is owned by real estate giant Megaworld Corporation, a partner of tourist hub Resorts World Manila. The development is a project of Malaysian conglomerate Genting Group, an official sponsor of Aston Villa. “When I talked to Resorts World people, they said they can help us invite Aston Villa because Aston Villa is sponsored by Genting Highlands,” Araneta said. “When they go to Asia, they can come over in the Philippines.” Araneta added that Aston Villa could also participate in a planned tournament in June called the Independence Cup, which will feature the Azkals and possibly clubs from Spain and China. Aston Villa is currently in danger of relegation from the Premier League, placing 19th out of 20 teams in the league table. In recent years, Premiere League clubs go on tours during their off-season from May to July to have practice during breaks as well as to promote themselves to football fans around the world. Manchester United will visit Thailand in July, while Arsenal will arrive in Indonesia in the same month as part of their Asian tours this year. If Aston Villa’s visit pushes through, it won’t be the first time that the country will host a top international football club. Two years ago, Major League Soccer squad Los Angeles Galaxy, then led by world football superstar David Beckham, walloped the Azkals, 6-1, in a friendly match at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium as part of its international tour. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/pff-plans-to-invite-premier-leagues-aston-villa-for-philippine-visit

If it is only up to 5000 seating capacity..then if there is going to be a game against aston villa there, then the ticket prices would probably cost a fortune

Just asking..How much is the seating capacity in Mckinley Hill?.. Once the grandstand's complete, it will seat 5k. But the article isn't saying the match will be held at McKinley Hill. It only says that the Genting Group, which owns Aston Villa, is a partner developer of the McKinley Hill area and Resorts World. Speaking of which, if Villa accepts the invite, this will be the next big thing after the match with LA Galaxy. It will be another big boost to Philippine football, that at least a top-tier European club is heading to the country. Even if they're in a relegation battle right now, they're still a legit English club with good credentials. Having the club in the country will be a big media event in Britain just like the other Premiership clubs do when they visit overseas. At least for the Midlands region of England (FYI, the club is based in Birmingham), the fans there will be eager to follow the match. Who knows, the BBC might just run a feature not just about the club visiting but also about the Azkals who will take part in the match. Let's hope this pushes through.

is there any chance to build an additional grandstand or maybe just a bleachers in the opposing side of the field?

For the Cebuanos, lots of events awaits you all Aside from the AFC President’s Cup, CFA will also be holding a friendly in June and September.
“Sa friendly, we would want to have a strong team to play against us. Vietnam is our priority pero depende pa rin yun sa availability nang mga teams,” said Araneta.
Iraq also wants to slug it out with the Azkals, but it had to be set aside for the moment due to the unavailability of a natural field here.
Meanwhile, the PFF is also hoping that Cebu will be able to send a team to the AFF Asean Super League. (FREEMAN)www.philstar.com/cebu-sports/2013/03/19/921543/busy-year-cebu-football-may-host-group-stage-afc-presidents-cup

Does anyone have further insight on this decision? (Disclosure: I am a Negrense) Doesn't it make more sense to field the National Club Champion to the ASEAN Super League? Wasn't that competition PFF sanctioned? It sounds so very arbitrary to just choose one particular FA for this, whereas fielding the club champion incentivizes FAs to strengthen their respective programs. Of course, if NOFA and Ceres were consulted beforehand and declined, then no issue there as I understand there are financial obligations involved in that. But if PFF just decided outright to give the distinction to Cebu.....I don't know, just doesn't seem right or fair. Also, it provides added value to the national club championship, makes the whole system based on merit and avoids perceptions that the old boy network is rearing its head again in the PFF. The UFL could serves as the entry point for the AFC President's Cup and the National Club Championship for the AFF Super League. Just something to think about.

narko: agree. i'm from Cebu but I think Ceres is a way better team than the CQCU. But does the ASEAN Super League has limits on foreigners playing for the club? As seen during the NCC, Ceres has a lot of foreigners too just like Global. In another note, after the AFC Challenge Cup, no more tournaments for the Azkals this year right?

It's not so much that it is a better team, but I prefer that there be some sort of structure or organization in the way the representation is determined. Establish a systematic and consistent procedure for dealing with these matters.. Di na lang basta dahil sabi ni ganito o kursanada ni ganyan. The old boy network and palakasan system has to be a thing of the past. No room for it nowadays and things must be conducted in a professional manner. I'm not saying it isn't, I don't know the details to this that is why I am asking. For all I know maybe they did ask Ceres first as the national club champions and Ceres may have declined. I don't know if the ASEAN Super League has limits on foreigners, they would probably have as that seems standard in most leagues everywhere. Ceres did have a couple of young Korean players and 2 Brits i think in their squad for the recent national club championship. As for the Azkals, I don't think there is any other tournament for them this year after the Challenge Cup qualifiers, unless the PFF decides to do a second edition of the Peace Cup. The U-23 have the ASEAN Games this December. If the PFF decides to hold the 2nd Peace Cup, depending on the opponents they will be able to invite I suggest they field the U-23 team for this tournament to prepare them for the ASEAN Games.

Weiss: We were already talking with some of the players regarding the June FIFA dates. as we might have three matches on June.
PFF should look for three possible opponents right now. there will be no more tournaments, we can organize and host for another small tournament. will there be another edition of Long Teng Cup this year?

There should be more matches later this year, June-August before the European leagues start again. Then some friendlies in Nov.-Dec.
