Elephants make it two wins

PAHANG have surged to the top of the Super League after a late Mohamed Borji winner against Felda United in the 88th minute at the PJ Stadium.

The Elephants, who had defeated the star-studded Johor Darul Takzim on Tuesday, never really looked like winning the tie until the Moroccan striker tapped in the ball from a Fauzi Roslan cross.

Home side Felda United had their chances earlier on in the game but were often let down by poor finishing and Mohamaed Ghaddar’s show-boating.

Pahang will play Negri Sembilan at home next while Felda United’s next home game will be against Kelantan next Friday.

Darul Takzim FC 1-0 Perak FA: The Southern Tigers see off the challenge from Perak

Darul Takzim FC rose to the occasion in front of their home crowd to register their first victory of the season over nine men Perak



Johor Darul Takzim tasted their first victory of the season as they saw off the challenge from Perak FA at the Tan Sri Dato' Haji Hassan Yunos stadium in Larkin on Friday night.

Despite playing with a two men advantage after Mohd Khairi and Hisyamudin Shaari went for early shower in the first half, Johor was not able to penetrate the tight Perak defence and could only register a one nil victory courtesy of Aidil Zafuan's goal in the second half.

Simone Del Nero, who missed Darul Takzim's first match three days ago, started the at right midfield and formed a telepathic partnership with former Spanish international, Dani Guiza, who was playing upfront with national player, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha.

Despite dominating the game in the first half, the Southern Tigers were not able to turn their chances in goal as they were met with a very sturdy Perak defence led by the towering 1.98 metre Brazilian Rafael Souza Novais.

Just before break, it was all over for coach Azraai Kor Abdullah as his team was left with nine men on the pitch as Mohd Khairi had an early shower after the midfielder was shown a second yellow card for his challenge on Dani Guiza.

Minutes later, Hisyamudin Shaari was given the marching orders too for a second bookable offence. It was an easy decision for referee Syed Azhar Syed Kamar as Hisyamudin's foot was dangerously high and went lunging in onto Del Nero's chest.

Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Johor took the lead three minutes after the break as captain Safiq Rafim sent a sublime curler from a corner which was headed into the back of the net by defender, Aidil Zafuan.

The home crowd were on their feet as Malaysian national striker Safee Sali was brought on by coach Fandi Ahmad to replace Azmi Muslim in the 55th minutes of the game.

But there was no further celebration for the hosts as the visitors stayed compact and disciplined at the back, led by towering 1.98 metre Brazilian defender Rafael Souza, to keep the scoreline the same till the final whistle, much to the frustration of the Johor faithful.

Fandi Ahmad lets loose on his players and the media

The Darul Takzim coach let his frustrations on his players and the media known in a post match interview after his side could only secure a slender 1-0 win over Perak

Emotions were high for Johor Darul Takzim coach Fandi Ahmad during the post-match interview, after his charges secured their first three points of the season.

However, despite playing with a two men advantage, Johor could only secure a one-goal victory against Perak courtesy of Aidil Zafuan’s goal in the second half.

“We are happy to get the first three points at home. But I thought Perak came here with a mission and wanted to hold us to a draw.” said Fandi

“You can see how many they (Perak) had in the box, they were compact in defence. If you had watched LionsXII, they were very discipline in defence, the same as Perak today.”

But the win did not guarantee a smile on Fandi’s face as he let his feelings known. First in line were his own players, followed by the media who were given a ‘gentle’ reminder.

“I am not happy with the performance," he said bluntly.

"Of course we controlled the game, we had extra men. But we need to put in a lot of work and have our ego in check because football is a team game so we will have to defend better together.

“Even with the extra men, I think we looked a bit jittery at times, so there is a lot of work still to be done. The season is long and I can give some excuse saying some of the boys are new to our style of play but being a footballer, individually, you must be strong on technical and tactical ability."

Making allusions to the big-name signings in his team the former Singapore player said: “Expectations are very high but we don’t want the media to hype up all this. We are not star-studded, for me players are all the same. It is only their name, whether they play national or ‘National Panasonic’, he is just a football player.”

As silence finally fell in th media room Fandi added: “Please do not put pressure on our players, I plead to you all. You are happy writing in the papers but it’s not good for us."

“That is why TMJ (Johor Crown Prince) said they (Johor players) cannot speak to the reporters. Let them settle down. Is it fair to them, to train one week and then expect them to score six goals? I don’t think so. They need some space.”

Johor Darul Takzim will next travel to Kota Bharu for a tricky away match against defending champions Kelantan FA on January 15.

Negeri Sembilan 0-0 Terengganu: Both teams fail to get first victory of the season

Both teams played out a goalless at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Seremban in a game high in competitiveness, but low in quality



Both teams failed to pick up their first league victory of the season as they played out a highly competitive 0-0 draw at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium. The home team, who looked blunt in attack last Tuesday at Selangor, created the first chance of the game in the 13th minute, coming about after Emanual Del Porras was felled by Terengganu’s Vincent Bikana mid-way inside the visitors half. The Argentine then snuck in behind Bikana to meet S. Sivanesan’s deep cross, but his headed effort was too high to trouble Wan Azraie Teh in goal.

Cameroonian defender Bikana gave away another dangerous free-kick, and was booked for his troubles after blocking off Shahurain Samah in the 21st minute. From the resulting free-kick Del Porras almost scored one of the goals of the season as he did a full mid-air pirouette from the edge of the area, to backheel Nazrin Nawi’s cross towards the top corner, however Wan Azraie got behind the effort and pushed it behind.


The Deers continued to pour on the pressure. Less than a minute later Norismaidham Ismail demonstrated great footwork on the edge of the Terengganu box after the ball was half cleared, his left foot curling effort was a good one but went just inches wide of the keepers left-hand post. Ten minutes later Samah got free down the right and laid the ball instead to Eddy Helmi who had a clear run on goal, however a desperate lunge from captain Faizal Muhamad was enough to block the ball, albeit it with a possible hint of handball.

As the half progressed the away team began to come into the game more and fashion some chances of their own. Muhamad was the first to test keeper Hamsani Ahmad with a low shot after he had burst through from midfield in the 33rd minute, but Hamsani pulled off a good save low down. A minute later former Sembilan player Effa Owuna threatened with a long range swerving effort but it flew wide. Three minutes before the break Ashari Samsudin worked his way into the area before squaring for Owuna , however the Cameroonian striker never quite got the ball out of his feet and could only fire straight at the keeper. On the stroke of half-time Owuna again had a shot on goal after beating William Modibo, but Hamsani palmed the ball out before it was cleared away from Samsudin.

The second half again saw the visitors fashion the best chances. In the 57th minute strong running from midfield and good link-up play by Owuna led to a chance for Manaf Mamat, but under pressure he could only stab his effort wide of goal. In the 60th minute a great ball over the top by Samsudin was bought down expertly by Owuna, but he selfishly shot high over the bar from an impossible angle when holding the ball up for his teammates in support may have been the wiser option.

It took the home time up until the 69th minute to have a decent effort on goal, however Nazrin’s low effort from distance never threatened Wan Azraie who gathered comfortably. In the 75th minute Terengganu again came close after Samsudin ran onto Owuna’s pass, but his low effort was well turned behind by Hamsani. Five minutes later substitute Farderin Kadir went on a mazy run for Terengganu, going past three defenders, but Hamsani came out to collect the ball before Kadir could get a shot away.

The Deers had their best chance of a disappointing second half for them in the 83rd minute, substitute Alif Samsudin got on the end of Tg Qayyum Ubaidillah’s great delivery from the left hand side, it was a chance he perhaps should have scored but he got his header all wrong and it ended up nowhere near.

Both teams were unable to create any chances after that and Terengganu may well be frustrated by their inability to break down Divaldo Alves’s injury ravaged team.

Petratos set for England trial

EXCLUSIVE: Former Sydney FC player Dimi Petratos is on the verge of securing a trial in England after an impressive preseason in Malaysia.

Petratos will know within the next couple of days whether he is headed to the UK just a month after signing a one-year deal with Kelantan FC.

The 20-year-old, who was frozen out of the Sky Blues’ starting XI, has notched up six goals in six games for the Malaysia Super League champions who he joined on a free transfer.

His agent, James Hardy, told au.fourfourtwo.com that reps from the club were in the UK negotiating the player’s next move.

But details of the English club and league where Petratos might find himself were being kept under wraps.

“At this stage it looks like Dimitri will now go to England for the month of January on a trial,” Hardy said.

“Kelantan have very strong links in England and have opened the door over there for him.”

Petratos received a rock star welcome when he arrived in Malaysia last month, fronting a packed press conference and prompting 26,000 views of his YouTube highlights reel overnight.

The move, he said, had gone well.

“Yeah I’ve enjoyed it – the fans are really good here,” he said “They’ve supported me really good and every game I’ve played they’ve given me a warm welcome.”

Asked about his situation with Kelantan, he added: “I’ve played six games and they’re happy with me. They’ll speak to me today or tomorrow and then they’ll just tell me what’s going on.

“(My agent) has told me just to stay focused here and then other things will happen and we’ll just go from there.

“England is a great place to play, everyone knows that. If the chance comes and I go over hopefully I’ll be able to play there.”

The Red Warriors kick off their league title defence on January 9 but the young Aussie is unlikely to take part, even if the trial fails to materialise.

Petratos was signed to boost the club’s foreign contingent ahead of their AFC Cup campaign which begins in March.

Speaking about his new club, he said: “The Australian league is more physical but they try and play good football over here which is good for me.

“I play a little bit everywhere. I play as a striker, left mid and as a number 10, so they’re just moving me around a little bit.

“I don’t mind playing anywhere up front in the attacking third – so that’s fine for me. In one month I’ve played six games so it’s good for me that I’m getting game time.”

Petratos burst onto the scene for the Sky Blues during their 2010/11 campaign but towards the end of his stay failed to even make the first team bench.

Relations between the out-of-favour striker and the Sydney club grew increasingly toxic, culminating in a training ground bust-up in October with goalkeeper coach, Zeljko Kalac.

But Petratos said he holds no ill-feeling towards his former club and continues to track their stuttering progress in the A-League.

“I’ve got the Sydney FC app on my phone so I’ve been following my team-mates,” he said. “From what I’ve been reading, they’ve got a lot of injuries and it’s not too good for them at the moment.

“I was disappointed (to leave Sydney) but in the end I just had to come over here and play games because at the time I wasn’t playing that much.

“That’s just something I guess you learn from and then you just have to move on. I’m still following the club and seeing how my team-mates are going and keeping in touch with the players."

TREBLE champions Kelantan are confident of collecting all three points against T-Team tomorrow even though they will be playing in the evening.

The match, at Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, is being held at 4.45pm as the lightings do not meet the standards set by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

The Red Warriors’ defensive stalwart Mohd Daudsu Jamaluddin, said although playing in the evening is not something they are used to, he is still confident of beating their neighbours.

“Our target is to get another win which will help us towards our goal of retaining the Super League crown,” said the player nicknamed the Kelantan Tank.

“We may not be used to evening matches but if we are to become champions again, we have to get used to all kinds of conditions.”

The 27-year-old also urged the strikers to be sharper in front of goal as Peter Butler’s teams are known for their strong defence.

“Our forwards wasted several chances against PKNS on Wednesday and we have to get our shooting boots on if we are to edge T-Team,” he added.

Kelantan coach Borjan Hodak said: “I’m confident the boys will rise to the occasion. It is an unfamiliar feeling but we are ready for the challenge.”

Meanwhile, striker Mohamad Norfarhan Muhammad, who is known for his ‘Ultraman’ celebration after scoring, warned they can’t take it easy against T-Team.

“They have a good coach and based on last year’s performances, are a handful for anyone,” said Farhan.

“Having said that, I believe we can collect out second win of the season tomorrow.”

Devan defends Ghaddar

“IT is his style. We can’t change that.”

That was what Felda United coach K. Devan replied when asked if Mohamad Ghaddar’s selfish acts were the cause of their 1-0 defeat to Pahang at the PJ Stadium today.

The Lebanese forward’s antics were perhaps the only entertainment at the PJ Stadium until Mohamed Borji’s winner in the 89th minute.

“Yes, there were situations when he held the ball for too long, but we knew what we were getting when we signed him,” said Devan.

“He is the type of player who looks to dribble. We needed that in a striker. For me his game play isn’t a problem.”

It must be noted Ghaddar was the only one who looked likely to score for Felda.

He could have put the home side in front after seven minutes via a long ball from defence. However, Pahang custodian Nasril Nourdin was the first on the scene as he push the ball away just Ghaddar was going to head it over him.

The hitman had another chance in the 14th minute but his shot was deflected for a corner.

Three minutes later, his selfish nature was evident as Ghaddar could have play a through ball that would have put a teammate clear on goal but opted to showboat his skills and was eventually surrounded by the Elephants.

After 31 minutes, Shahriza Saad burst past the Pahang defence but Ghaddar once again held on to the ball for too long and a scoring opportunity was lost.

The only decent chance of the second half came in the 79th minute as Ghaddar chased a loose ball but Helmi manage to push the ball away, outside the box, with his hands.

“We had our chances but didn’t take them. It was a lapse in concentration that allowed the goal in,” Devan added.

“Overall, our defence played well and our counter attacks were giving them problems. Now, we have to collect the points in our next match. It is still early in the season but playing evening matches has taken a toll on the players.”

Felda’s opening two matches were both played in the evening. In the season opener they held Terengganu 1-1. They will play Perak on Tuesday.

Another big win for cops

POLICE continued their winning start in the 2013 Premier League by hammering Kuala Lumpur 4-0 at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras today.
On Monday, Police thumped NS Betaria 5-0 in their league opener.

It was a dull first half today as both teams kept giving away possession due to the slippery pitch.

Kuala Lumpur were clearly the better side in creating goal-scoring opportunities and Munir Amran had the best chance in the 28th minute but the 29-year-old’s shot from the edge of the box was saved comfortably by Police goalkeeper Willfred Jabun.

The Hawks also dominated the early stages of the second half until their defender Ahmad Jihad Ismail was given a red card in the 56th minute for a studs-up challenge on Police’s Mohd Fekry Tajudin.

Police then made full use of the numerical advantage to open the scoring in the 62nd minute through Khairul Amar Kassim.

Substitute Dzul Kaikal Shamery then made it 2-0 in the 83rd minute before Afif Amiruddin and Khairul Izuan Abdullah scored in injury time to give Police an emphatic win.

Dollah: We can be among top three

PAHANG coach Dollah Salleh believes his side can finish among the top three in the Super League after securing yet another later winner, this time against Felda United at the PJ Stadium today.

The Elephants had came back from two goals down against the star-studded cash-rich Johor Darul Tazkim to win 3-2 at home on Tuesday.

It was previously thought that Pahang would be the whipping boys of the league as the 2012 Premier League runners-up did not sign any big name players. Pahang were relegated from the Super League in 2011.

“We are not the whipping boys of the Super League. We have enough quality to finish in the top three,” said Dollah Salleh.

“Our players have the ability to do well. The believe is there.”

Their best chance came in the 25th minute but national winger Azamuddin Akil was a tad too slow in executing his shot. That allowed Felda to get back and defend the attempt.

Pahang had another chance late in the half but Saiful Nizam Miswan’s glancing header from an Azamuddin freekick was saved by Helmi Eliza Elias.

The Elephants did not have many chances in the second half but their overall play improved.

Devan had opted to bring on Mohamed Borji in the second half and it was a fruitful move as the Moroccan forward tapped in the winner from a Fauzi Roslan cross in the 88th minute.

Import players, Borji and Nikolche Kleckarovski of Macedonia, were left out of the starting list after failing to impress in the opening match 3-2 over Johor Darul Takzim. Then, the move to take off both players at half time paid off as Pahang came back to score three to win the match.

“I still believe in the foreigners we have signed. They still have to setttle in. Borji came on today and did well. That’s a good sign,” added Dollah.

13 December 2012 was a dim day for Malaysia as they failed in their defence of the AFF Suzuki Cup title – a trophy that was eventually lifted by their southern neighbours Singapore nine days later.

Between their shock 0-3 loss at home to Singapore in the opening match and the aggregate 1-3 defeat at the hands of Thailand in the semifinals, the campaign was a disappointing one on the overall for K. Rajagobal and his charges.

There were bright sparks among their ranks, though – and none more so than the four players who had spent much of the year donning the colours of the Harimau Muda in the outfit’s maiden S.League campaign.

Fadhli Shas, Mahalli Jasuli, Wan Zack Haikal and Gary Steven Robbat all made the final cut for Rajagobal’s squad, though only the first of those four names made the starting lineup for the game against Singapore on 25 November.

Mahalli and Wan Zack had to wait until the second group game against Laos to join Fadhli on the field, while Robbat’s break came midway through the third group game, where Malaysia got the result they needed to sink Indonesia.

Once they made it into the field, however, it proved hard to bump them off – Wan Zack was laid low in the semifinals only because of injury, while Fadhli played in every minute of Malaysia’s campaign until his much-criticised red card in Bangkok.

The quartet’s commendable showing indicated the effectiveness of the man who had been training them for years, Harimau Muda head coach Ong Kim Swee.

Ong and his charges featured in the S.League last year as part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Football Associations of Singapore and Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur in mid-2011.

Shortly after Ong had led the Young Tigers to the retention of their gold medal in Southeast Asian Games men’s football event later that year, he was given the task of guiding them further in their first Singapore assignment.

They created an immediate impression among S.League watchers with a breathtaking and dynamic display of football. Combining athleticism with a sharp short-passing game from defence to attack, they put opponents of various colours under pressure game after game.

That a bunch of young Malaysians had done so well – better than their Singaporean counterparts, at the very least – may have surprised many, but for Ong, who has always demanded high standards of professionalism and quality of play, this was just what he had asked for.

The former Sabah, Sarawak and Malacca player was certainly satisfied with his team’s report card at the end of their first S.League campaign as he reviewed how they have adapted to a different style of football south of the Causeway in an exclusive interview with sleague.com.

“It was a very good achievement for us to be in the top five (they eventually finished fourth) – I cannot ask for more from these boys, the majority of whom are under-21,” he shared.

“It proved that we have been doing something right in our youth development. And it’s not only players like Fadhli and Mahalli – we have coped for parts of the season without some of our national players, and you must remember we do not have any foreigners in the team.

“(Forward) D. Saarvindran has improved tremendously. No one had heard of him previously, but he played a lot of minutes and his progress showed.

“Shahrul (Mohd Saad) has played the most games among the players here, while other younger players like Nazirul Naim have also made good progress from their season in Singapore.”

The rapid growth of the players, as well as the consistency in the style of play constantly preached and reinforced by the former Malaysia international, did not come overnight.

It was built over the years, starting from the time when the players were students at the Bukit Jalil Sports School, progressing from there into the Malaysian national age-group setup.

Throughout that time, Ong was present, starting with the fundamentals – and that was something he stressed as tremendously important.

“Where youth development is concerned, we need to be consistent,” he emphasised.

“Football is basically about the basics and technique, and the most important asset in modern football today is a player’s thinking mentality. If the players master the basic techniques and know-how, then they will find dealing with tactical play simple.

“If our education system is good, then we will produce good students who know what to do. It is the same in developing players; it is not just about kicking a football and showing off.

“I conduct drills that develop thinking ability, because it is important for the players to prepare to think and be aware of what is going on around them during match situations,” he continued.

“These help our players tremendously in terms of thinking ability. It helps because of the time we spent working on them for a long time, they understand what we want out of them, what they are doing and what is expected of them.”

What is expected of these boys is huge, for they have been spoken of in terms of bringing back the heyday of Malaysian football, made famous by many a legendary tale of individual football icons.

Witnessing success from an entire cohort, however, is virtually unprecedented in the country’s football history, and the idea becomes even harder to imagine when one takes into account the dark chapter of their past – the match-fixing scandals of the mid-1990s.

A massive police operation at the time saw over 100 players being called up for questioning, leading ultimately to the sacking of 21 players and coaches and suspensions for many others.

Though Ong himself was unscathed, the memories were vivid – “there was no more generation of players in one fell swoop” – and while Malaysia reached the final of the inaugural Tiger Cup in 1996, regional success proved elusive for a long time.

The ill-fated Asian Cup campaign of 2007, where the national team crashed out with three embarrassing defeats in the group stage, reduced them to laughingstocks in the eyes of a disillusioned public, but that only served to steel the wills of Ong and other forward-looking coaches.

Having plugged away with their youth development projects, they first tasted joy in 2009 when Rajagobal’s charges, led by Safiq Rahim and Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak, claimed gold at the Vientiane Southeast Asian Games.

Two years later, Ong and his boys matched that feat in Jakarta by beating hosts Indonesia in the final with a lineup that included Fadhli, Mahalli, Irfan Fazail and Thamil Arasu among the starters – all four going on to play in the S.League three months later.

Things were definitely turning around for the Football Association of Malaysia, yet Ong cautioned that it would be wrong now for him and his colleagues to take things easy.

“The boys we have are a golden generation of players whom we have to look after properly,” noted the 42-year-old.

“They have come from the FAM academies that were set up in every state after what happened in the 1990s, and they are improving every year in terms of exposure. They are on track towards following the footsteps of Santokh Singh and Soh Chin Aun.

“But for that to happen, it is my responsibility to protect them, otherwise they will never come out and play the way they can. If they are affected by bad experiences like some of the things we had seen before, they will become like the rest – and we cannot afford to have such talented players go to waste.

“Our style of preparation in working with these players is to prepare them to go international and compete in international football. Their mindset has to be tuned to aspiring to play in Europe, instead of merely preparing them to go for the major local clubs in their adult days.”

As far as that aspiration is concerned, one young man by the name of Nazmi Faiz Mansor has already made the breakthrough, landing a move to Portuguese outfit SC Beira-Mar in May.

Most of Nazmi’s performances at the club may have been for the Under-19 side and not the Primeira squad, but that has done nothing to douse the hopes of many that he and his Harimau Muda mates can still hit the big-time.

Come 2013, several more of Ong’s charges will be leaving the Harimau Muda nest to embark on a new chapter in their professional lives, even as he takes the bulk of his squad on a year-long training programme that will see them play in Australia and Europe.

Far from dwelling upon the departures, he highlighted his belief that they would have learnt well under his care, stressing that the upward trajectory can only continue for them in the years to come.

“They have developed themselves tremendously, not just merely in terms of training, but also in terms of being taught on nutrition, lifestyle and discipline as a professional footballer,” he mused.

“They have been systematically educated and have shown regular progress in their development. Like any parent, I am concerned of what happens after they leave me one day, but I am confident they will continue with the habits they have learnt while growing up.

“The national team will also ensure this continuity, especially when any player reports for duty from his senior club, which he joins after graduating from the Harimau Muda programme.

“Not everyone is a Nazmi Faiz, but by developing as far as we can, I hope we have contributed to the rise and rise of the national team after 2007.”

Sundram: We'd love to win, but Selangor are giants of Malaysian football

The 'Dazzler' wants his side to keep their feet on the ground and stay focused after a winning start to their MSL season, ahead of their second game at home against Selangor.

A much-revamped LionsXII squad got their 2013 Malaysian Super League [MSL] season off to a flying start when they defeated newly-promoted ATM FA on Wednesday night, despite many predicting they would struggle to cope with the absence of key players Safuwan Baharudin and Hariss Harun.

Speaking to Goal.com Singapore after their training session at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday night, LionsXII head coach V. Sundramoorthy urged his side to stay focused and keep working hard so as to “get as many points as possible”.

“It’s still early [in the MSL]; I mean, it’s a long season and we still have 21 games [to go], and one game doesn’t make a season,” Sundram said.

The ex-Singapore international also spoke about what the new, mostly Under-23, players had brought to his side in his second season in charge, after leading them to a runners-up finish in their debut 2012 season.

“They have youth, they have energy and they have running ability. The most important is [for them] to be composed,” Sundram pointed out.

“[They have] to keep the ball, try to make chances and get shots on goal [and just] go out there to play and do their best.”

Skipper Shahril Ishak, who scored the solitary goal in their opening 1-0 win against ATM, did not participate in training, but should be available for tonight’s game against Selangor FA at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

“He [Shahril] was tired and he needs to recover [but]I think he should be okay; let’s see how [the situation is tomorrow],” Sundram said, before adding that they were looking to build on their winning start to the season.

“We would love to [get another win], but we are playing the giants of Malaysia, let’s see how it goes.”

Hafiz Sujad: I want to emulate Isa Halim

After an impressive debut performance against ATM FA on Wednesday, the LionsXII new boy is keen to keep his starting spot in the middle of the park beside Isa Halim

Things did not appear to be too rosy for LionsXII head coach V.Sundramoorthy during his preparations for the 2013 Malaysian Super League (MSL) campaign, especially in terms of his central midfield options.

Shahdan Sulaiman’s impressive play-making displays were evident for all to see last term and with the classy midfielder's departure to Tampines Rovers, there were going to be big shoes to fill.

To make things worse, vice-captain Hariss Harun will be ruled out for a few months due to a fibula injury that was sustained at the recent AFF Suzuki Cup in December.

However, after their victorious start in Paroi against ATM FA in their MSL opener, it seems like the LionsXII tactician can put his mind at ease over his midfield woes.

Aided by midfield hard-man Isa Halim, debutant Hafiz Sujad produced an assured performance in shackling Malaysian veteran Shukor Adan in the middle of the park and ultimately played a key role in shutting out the ATM FA attack.

It was a display which belied his tender years and one which, bar no major mishaps, has secured a spot in the starting eleven for their first home game of the season against Selangor FA on Saturday.

After a S.League season where he was largely deployed at left-back with former club Courts Young Lions, the 22-year-old was glad to return to his favoured position despite the heavy responsibilities that come with it.

“Yeah, I’m happy to play in the middle again,” he told Goal.com Singapore after Friday evening’s training session at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

"At the same time, it’s more risky too. If you lose the ball in the middle, it affects the team straightaway."

The ever-humble Hafiz admits that it was a surreal debut for him, but he is not prepared to rest on his laurels yet.

“It’s an real eye-opener for me,” he beamed. “Last year I was watching these big names on TV and this season I’m on the same field with them.

"I thought I played a good game that day, but it’s only the first game of the season and I won’t get carried away. I [have] got to put my head down and keep on working hard for my place.”

The 22-year-old also points out that midfield partner Isa has been a great influence on his game, be it on or off the pitch.

“He’s a player whom I really look up to,” he said. “He’s hardworking in every way and always gives his 100 per cent, which is something I want to emulate. He always give good advice as he’s more experienced.”

Without dead-ball specialist Shaiful Esah in the LionsXII this season, the left-footed Hafiz is relishing the opportunity to take on the mantle of being the team's primary set-piece taker.

“Sundram was the one who appointed me for that” he revealed. “I’m happy with that, if he wants me to take them, I will do my best for the team.”

Playing against Selangor FA will bring back bittersweet memories for Hafiz. The midfielder was part of the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup squad, an annual affair that was played at the Shah Alam Stadium in September last year.

Hafiz wound up conceding a penalty against Selangor veteran Amri Yahyah in a 3-1 defeat, and he vividly remembers the superb environment in that packed stadium.

“Yeah, that was my first experience in facing such a huge crowd and the fans there were awesome. It was a really good experience to take back [with me],” he recalled.

Having been a spectator at a number of LionsXII home games last season, Hafiz acknowledges the thrilling atmosphere that a filled Jalan Besar Stadium can generate and is looking forward to his maiden experience as a player.

“I’ve been here for a few games [last season] and the crowd’s really exciting, but this time I’m the one on the field playing," he said.

"Definitely there’ll be a little bit of pressure, but I will take it slow to build up my momentum tomorrow so that I won’t lose focus."

FAM: There are no more issues regarding Mat Yo's contract - FAM

FAM has released a statement declaring that Norshahrul has paid everything that he should pay to KAFA, and there is no longer any issue

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has released a statement saying Norshahrul's contract buy out issue has been resolved already. They made it clear that there is no more contract issue for the former Kelantan striker, and his status with new team Johor Darul Takzim FC has been finalised.

FAM's Players Status Committee chairman, Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, said the issue has been resolved since the national striker has already paid the RM299,000 demanded by Kelantan Football Association (KAFA)

Speaking to Bernama, Takiyuddin said that based on FAM's record, Norshahrul had made two payments to buy out his contract from Kelantan through a bank draft.

The first payment was RM250,000, which was paid to KAFA on Jan 4 2013, and the second payment of RM49,000 was issued a day later. "We have received the payment details from Norshahrul's lawyer," he added.

Recently, media reports had claimed that KAFA president, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, had asked 2012 M-League season's MVP to pay RM1 million to resolve his transfer to Johor Darul Takzim.

Sathianathan backs ATM to rebound

ATM coach B. Sathianathan believes his side will bounce back from defeat in the opening game of their 2013 Malaysia Super League campaign on Saturday.

ATM, tipped by many to challenge for the title this year, were handed a 1-0 defeat by LIONSXII on Wednesday at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium.

Despite dominating proceedings, the hosts wasted a plethora of excellent chances, with Marlon Alex James missing the pick of the bunch when he failed to connect cleanly with the ball when faced with an open goal just four yards out.

And they were made to play for their profligacy in the 67th minute when opposition captain Shahril Ishak pounced on a loose ball to fire past Farizal Harun.

While he admitted his players only had themselves to blame for the defeat, Sathianathan insists there were many positives to take from the game.

"I admit it was a game we should've won hands down," he told The Star. "But we blew it.

"I'm disappointed with the result but not the performance.
"The positive thing is that we created chances... hopefully we'll learn from our mistakes."

ATM will now be looking to bounce back on Saturday when they visit PKNS FC and although their coach revealed he will be without speedy winger D. Christie Jayaseelan, he believes they can get the job done.
"Christie's down with a groin injury but will be back in the team soon," Sathianathan added. "We'll have more penetration on the flanks.
"I'm sure we'll get over this defeat."

The Armed Forces won promotion to the Super League last season by finishing top of the Premier League, six points ahead of runners-up Pahang, who also earned a spot in Malaysian football's top flight.

The Top 10 Foreign Players In Malaysian Football

.INTEREST in the Malaysia Super League has certainly skyrocketed following Johor FA’s shock signing of Spanish international striker Dani Guiza on a year-long loan deal from Primera Liga outfit Getafe last week.

Boasting a sterling resume of Primera Liga and Champions League experience, plus forming part of the Spanish national team which won Euro 2008, the 32-year-old is undoubtedly a player with star qualities and should prove to be a huge asset to the southern state side.

Guiza carved a name for himself after being crowned Primera Liga top scorer with Mallorca, scoring 27 goals in 37 matches in the 2007-2008 season, and then went on to help Spain conquer Euro 2008.

He has played 21 times for Spain and scored six goals. Not bad with the kind of strikers Spain has been producing in recent years. Shortly after winning Euro 2008, the 5ft 11 1/2in-tall Guiza signed up with Turkish club Fenerbahce, before returning to Spain to play for Getafe last season.

Guiza is arguably the biggest name to ever grace the Malaysian professional football scene.

However, he certainly isn’t the first big-name foreign player to grace the Malaysian league. Malaysian Digest takes a walk down memory lane and looks at 10 other superstar signings (in no particular order) which had made an impact on the scene and left Malaysian fans breathless with their skills and mastery of the game.

1 - Juan Manuel Arostegui (Argentina)
Juan Manuel Arostegui

Born in Cordoba and started his career playing for Argentine giants Boca Juniors in 1998 to 2000. However, he was unable to make an impact in the club, which boasts luminaries such as Diego Maradona and Juan Roman Riquelme.

He continued playing in Argentina with clubs like El Porvenir and Belgrano de Cordoba.

In 2003, he made the long trip to Malaysia and signed up with ambitious MPPJ FC, helmed by coach Dollah Salleh, for two seasons in 2003. He proved to be a fantastic buy, hammering in 33 goals from 37 matches for MPPJ. This also included that remarkable hattrick he scored in the 3-0 win over Sabah in the Malaysia Cup final at the National Stadium in 2003.

That proved to be the first and only time that a club side, instead of a state side, had won the prestigious silverware.

And now it is learnt that Arostegui, 31, may well make a return to Malaysia to don Pahang colours next season.

2 - Laszlo Repasi (Hungary)

The striker, who has one cap for Hungary, was brought to Ipoh by Perak head coach Karl Weigang in 1997, when the season was halfway through.

It didn’t take him long to establish a ‘cult' following in Ipoh. He eventually finished as top scorer in 1997 with 19 goals to win the Golden Boot award. One shudders to think how many goals he would have plundered if he had joined Perak at the start of the season.

The Magyar had a lot of fans including youngsters from Tanjung Malim who would travel by train on match day to Ipoh. These youngsters would then return home by the 1am train.

When asked, these youngsters said: "We took the trouble to come to Perak Stadium all the way from Tanjung Malim simply because we want to see Repasi scoring goals."

Repasi played a vital role yet again in 1998 as Perak made the Malaysia Cup final and beat Terenganu on penalties at Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

The last time Perak won the Cup was in 1970. However, Repasi did not play in the final and he left for Finland soon after.

3 - Merzagua Abderrazak (Morocco)

A former Morocco international striker who played a major role in steering unfancied Penang to the League titles in 1998 and 2001. Penang also ended up as Malaysia Cup runners-up in 1999 and 2000.

Used to play alongside with Morocco star attacking midfielder Mustapha Hadji.

Latest reports suggested Abderrazak, or nicknamed "The Great Merz", may make a return to Penang as coach next season.

4 - Emile M'bouh M'bouh (Cameroon)

In 1995, Perlis suddenly became the centre of attention for local football fans when the tiny state pulled off a coup, signing Cameroon international midfielder Emile M’bouh M’bouh for two years.

Football fans would remember the midfielder as being in the Cameroon side which stunned the Maradona-led Argentina in the 1990 World Cup.

M’bouh M’bouh also played in the 1994 World Cup, and had represented club side such as France’s Le Havre and Portugal’s Victoria de Guimares.

His signing generated massive interest and excitement in sleepy Kangar, as fans flocked to the stadium to watch him in action and gush over his skills.

His presence rejuvenated interest in the game in Perlis, previously the whipping boys of local football.


5 - Stephen Keshi (Nigeria)

Stephen Keshi (right)If the signing of M’bouh M’bouh was considered a fluke, local football fans’ jaws certainly dropped when two years later, Perlis repeated the unthinkable, this time by signing dynamic Nigerian defender Stephen Keshi.

Keshi, who captained Nigeria in the 1994 World Cup, was also part of the squad which won the African Nations Cup that same year.

Keshi, who played for Belgian club Andelecht among others, has 64 caps for Nigeria and scored nine goals. He is now is head coach of the Nigerian football team.

6 - Karel Stromsik (Czechoslovakia)

Karel StromsikIn the 1980s and early 1990s, Selangor was a powerhouse in the Malaysian semi-pro league. Their status was further strengthened with the signing of former Czech international Karel Stromsik in 1989.

The goalkeeper, who had represented Czechoslovakia in the 1982 World Cup, proved to be an astute signing, using his experience to marshall the Selangor defence and keep opposing strikers at bay.

Stromsik wasted no time in establishing himself as a fan favourite, his towering presence and aerial ability helping Selangor clinch the league titles for two years in a row in 1989 and 1990. He eventually left Malaysia in 1993.

However, the lure of Malaysia, which he had described as his “second home”, proved too much and he returned in 2003, this time as director of coaching for Public Bank, which emerged as the 2003/2004 Malaysia League second division champs.

He is now a technical advisor for Felda United, which plays in the Super League.

7 - Tony Cottee (England)

Selangor’s habit of signing big-name players continued with the acquisition of England international Tony Cottee for two seasons in 1996.

Cottee, a tough-as-nails striker who had previously starred for Everton and West Ham, was then the biggest star signing in local football. Boasting a record fee of £750,000, he didn’t take long to adapt to Malaysian football and made an instant impact, scoring 14 goals from 24 matches.

His feats also helped Selangor clinch the coveted Malaysia Cup in 1996 and 1997.

However, Cottee’s less-than-complimentary remarks on the state of Malaysian football, such as “mushrooms on the pitch” and having to clean his own boots, all widely publicized by the UK tabloids, was not received kindly on the local front and he left Malaysia soon after.

Cottee, to his credit, had maintained that the quotes were taken out of context.

He has since returned to Malaysia as a pundit on Astro SuperSport.

8 - Scott Ollenrenshaw (Australia)

The former Australian international, who came to Sabah from English side Walsall in 1994, was an unknown commodity at first but that changed rapidly the moment the season began.

From 1994 to 1998, Ollerenshaw terrorized opposing defenders with his speed and goal-poacher instincts, boasting a record of more than one goal a game for four straight seasons.

The ‘Ginger Maradona’, as he was later known, helped himself to an astonishing 180 goals from 110 matches up to his retirement at 31 due to injury, which probably came as a relief to the league’s defenders.

His playing career in Malaysia saw him win the Golden Boot twice.

However, his retirement did not end his love affair with Malaysia, as he married former Malaysian karate champion Michelle Koh and continued to reside in Sabah.

He now runs a sports tourism business in Kota Kinabalu and is a football pundit on the FourFourTwo TV show.

9 - Fandi Ahmad (Singapore)

Singapore's very own legendary striker played for Kuala Lumpur from 1986 to 1989. A classy player who assisted KL to three successive Malaysia Cup glories, he also helped KL clinch the league title in 1988.

Before coming to KL, Fandi played for Dutch First Division side club FC Groningen from 1983 to 1985 where he scored 11 goals from 36 matches. He has 101 caps with Singapore and scored 52 goals.

He signed up with Pahang in 1991, this time as a midfelder due to his advanced age, and helped the club to the coveted ‘double’, winning the Malaysia Cup and league title the following year.

Fandi is still heavily involved in Malaysian football, and was recently appointed Johor manager.

10 - David Rocastle (England)

The former England midfielder, affectionately known as ‘Rocky’ , made his debut for Sabah in 1999.

Known for his powerhouse style, the footballing journeyman, who had played for Arsenal, Leeds, Manchester City and Chelsea, was widely expected to be the fulcrum of the East Malaysian side.

However, injuries limited him to only 13 games, in which he still managed to score eight goals. He finally hung up his boots in December that year.

Sadly, he passed away on March 31, 2001 after a battle with cancer, at only 33-years-old.

Football Debate FAM? Kay Kim Ready To Face 'Em on TV

KUALA LUMPUR: There is nothing wrong in a historian commenting on sports because whatever happened before is related to history, including football in the country, said sports critic Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim.

Kay Kim said if anyone questioned his credibility to comment on the status of football in the country, it meant they too are not aware of history.

"Those who questioned my credibility do not know my background. If they knew they should not have made such comments. If anyone wants to talk or debate about football on television, I am ready to face them.

"If they did not live in that era, they would not know what actually happened then," said Kay Kim, when interviewed on Bernama Radio24's 'Dalam Radar' programme today.

Media reports had Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) vice president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal (left) as telling the media (journalists) to pose questions related to football to those who are really qualified or people with credibility to speak or comment on such matters.

Kay Kim (right), a historian, was also sad and disappointed that people today do not pay attention to history that encompass all aspects and not just politics or war.

He said if those involved in sports cannot accept criticism, they should always show positive results.

"If cannot accept criticism just win always...that is what we used to do. In those days all national heroes were sports personalities, not those who scored 24 'A' in examinations," he said.

Former international Reduan Abdullah who is now a football pundit said only through history can the performance of a sports be measured or determine whether performance was consistent or not.

"The history of football is relevant and the opinion or comment of 'veterans' are closely related and important because they were in the golden era of football in the 70s. If not based on history, how are we going to determine the road map of the country's development in football," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He said Malaysia had many professional players but the management aspect was
still at the amateur stage.

Meanwhile, National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said efforts to develop football must be realistic and need to be managed by organizations that are more professional.

"History is important to gauge the achievement of the past and present. We cannot however, solely depend on history and be satisfied the achievements of the past. There are certain aspects that are not relevant to current times.

"In football, we must accept the fact that changes are needed in the national squad. I believe the organization responsible is always concerned with the development of football in the country," he said.

Two-men down against the star-studded Southern Tigers, many teams would have crumbled under pressure. But Azraai Khor's men defended with their lives, losing only 0-1 at the end of the day.

Key to their inspiring performance was Brazilian defender Rafael Novais, who was rock-solid alongside Shahrom Kalam at the heart of their defence. And the former Bangkok Glass defender was visibly proud of his teammates.

"We played our hearts out and I am proud of my team," he told Goal.com Malaysia in an exclusive interview.

"We knew they have a great team, but regardless of that, we played as a team and probably did not deserve to lose. If the referee did not make things hard for us, I think we could have even won the game."

Nicknamed the 'Hulk' of Perak, Rafael admitted that Johor Darul Takzim are a solid side with plenty of quality, although he was quick to add that Perak are equally strong to be challenging for top honours.

"Johor Darul Takzim are a really good team. But I think a lot of people expected too much of them from the game on Friday. I think it will take some time for them to form some understanding between the players.

"Nonetheless, I think we have enough quality in our team to win titles. We believe that we can become a force this year.

"My time here with the Seladangs has been nothing short of sensational. Every single day, I'm learning something new and adapting to the technical surrounding of the team. I am certainly very happy to be a part of this team and hopefully we can achieve something big this year."

T-Team 1-0 Kelantan: Defending champions edged out by Titans



Peter Butler's men showed tremendous grit and determination to emerge as 1-0 victors against defending league champions Kelantan in Kuala Terengganu



T-Team bounced back from their opening match defeat against Perak by seizing maximum points in a closely fought 1-0 win against defending champions Kelantan. Peter Butler's men displayed plenty of hardwork in the middle of the park, as they contained the Red Warriors and secured valuable three points at the Sultan Nasiruddin Shah stadium.

Bojan Hodak opted to play Zairo Anuar in the hole behind Keita Mandjou, as Peter Butler once again played Caleb Folan upfront, with George Boateng leading the midfield. However, the tempo lied with the away side during the opening few minutes. Haris Safwan almost score through a glorious opportunity but it missed the target.

The miss proved to be costly though as T-Team seized the lead on the 8th minute through Aizulridwan, who fired home after being played through brilliantly by Caleb Folan. The goal sparked life into the match as both sides began to further push forward.

Kelantan dominated possession in midfield, but struggled to make an impact in the final third. Keita Mandjou, was once again an isolated figure upfront. Indra Putra managed to get the ball into the back of the net minutes after that, but it was correctly ruled out for offside.

Haris Safwan then had a one-on-one opportunity, but the T-Team man in between their sticks saved the day impeccably. Indra Putra and Keita Mandjou then wasted several other opportunities but the score remained until half time.

After the break, Keita Mandjou was taken off for Norfarhan and the latter occupied Indra's position, with him being push further upfront to partner Haris Safwan. As a result, the veteran forward once again managed to get the ball into the back of the net, but was ruled offside for the second time in the game.

As the match evolved, it became a scrappy affair. Caleb Folan's shot was easily saved by Khairul Fahmi, whil Haris Safwan unsuccessfully attempted on several occassions. Hasbullah then fired another shot wide off the post late on in the game.

George Boateng was ever-present in the second half, blocking Piya's creativity in midfield and it proved to be vital. Zairo was brought off in the dying minutes, with Aris Aidi being thrown in to hunt for the equalizer but Peter Butler's men defended well to ensure that they seized maximum points against the defending champions. As for Kelantan, their lackluster performance is nothing less than a cause for concern.

LionsXII 1-0 Selangor: Sundram’s boys maintain winning start
A solitary Fazrul Nawaz header proved enough to see off the challenge of the Red Giants and send the home side joint-top of the Malaysian Super League table

After a less-than-satisfactory start to their Malaysian Super League (MSL) 2012 campaign where they only collected one point from two games, the LionsXII have started their 2013 season with a bang – by gathering maximum points so far.

Following their 1-0 victory over ATM FA in their season opener three days ago, Sundram’s boys overcame the challenge of Selangor FA with a similar scoreline at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday evening.

Fazrul Nawaz’s first-half header proved to be the eventual winner in this contest, which was delayed by 15 minutes due to a heavy downpour before the game.

Despite being dominated by the visitors during the opening exchanges, the first opening of the game fell to the LionsXII.

A superb ball over the top by Isa Halim on nine minutes set captain Shahril Ishak free, and his cut-back for Fazrul Nawaz saw the striker fire a tame effort straight at Selangor goalkeeper Norazlan Razali.

Instead, it was Izwan Mahbud who was the first to be troubled among the two custodians, as he tipped over a 35-yard freekick from Amri Yahyah four minutes later.

The LionsXII then started to settle into the game and impose themselves, which led to them scoring on 24 minutes via a set-piece.

A superb counter-attacking move saw Norazlan push an Irwan Shah shot wide and from the resulting corner, Baihakki Khaizan flicked Hafiz Sujad’s superb delivery into the path of Fazrul Nawaz, who nodded firmly beyond the reach of Norazlan inside the six-yard box.

Selangor attempted to hit back but found stumbling blocks in Faritz Hameed and Izwan – the former making a superb block from Francis Doe’s close-range volley, while the latter pushed over a Raimi Nor freekick.

Holding the slim one-goal advantage until half time, Sundram showed no intention to sit back as he brought on Safirul Sulaiman for Nazrul Nazari in an attempt to inject more bite into his side’s attack.

And they could have gone two up on 63 minutes when Irwan was released by Hafiz’s through pass, but the 24-year-old’s lack of composure saw him shoot straight at Norazlan.

With less than half an hour to go, Selangor coach Irfan Bakti hauled off the out-of-sorts Amri Yahyah and Shukur Jusoh for energetic attackers Ramzul Zahini and K Gurusamy.

However they huffed and puffed though, they still could not bring the LionsXII house down.

Bunyamin Omar fired wide from outside the box on 66 minutes, while Doe similarly thumped off-target after cutting in from the left 12 minutes later, but the home side saw out the final 10 minutes rather comfortably to seal the win.

With this win, the LionsXII have six points from two games and now sit on top of the MSL table with Pahang FA.

King James’ perfect response

MARLON ALEX JAMES answered his critics in the best possible fashion when he netted a hattrick as Armed Forces (ATM) defeated PKNS 3-1 at the Shah Alam Stadium today.

In other games, T-Team stunned Kelantan 1-0 with a goal by Aizulriszwan Razali while Lions XII defeated Selangor by the same margin.

James had been criticised for missing several chances after the soldiers were beaten 1-0 by Lions XII on Wednesday.

Several fans called for him to be dropped as they felt at 36, he was too old for the Super League, despite his goals helping them win the Premier League crown last year.

He was also the Malaysia Cup top scorer with 12 goals and helped them to the final which they lost 3-2 to Kelantan. In all, he netted 34 goals in 2012.

However, it was not until PKNS’ Patrick Ronaldinho’s sending off in the 60th minute that Armed Forces were in cruise control.

Armed Forces got off to a bright start in the sixth minute when James had an effort blocked. From the ensuing corner, P. Gunalan handled the ball and referee Ku Alaudin pointed to the spot. Marlon stepped up and cooly slotted the ball in the seventh minute.

The Gladiators looked dangerous from then on and Shukor Adnan could have made it 2-0 with a header just three minutes later.

However, PKNS slowly got themselves into the game and were rewarded when Fazli Baharuddin found himself with acres of space in the 27th minute and made no mistake.

That stunned the visiting side as their game dropped a notch or two but James had another header saved by goalkeeper Remezey Che Ros in the 37th minute.

The start of the second half was stark difference to the first as both teams were playing it cautious. However, this changed after PKNS were reduced to 10 men in the 60th minute.

Ronaldinho, who was a sensation for Sime Darby last year, received his second yellow card for diving in the penalty box.

Three minutes later, James profited from a Affize Faisal Mamat pass as he slotted past Remezy. He made in 3-1 in the 72th minute to kill off the game.

“Many have had much to say regarding him after the first match but I have faith in him. Marlon is an integral part of our plans. We can’t do without him,” said ATM coach B. Satianathan.

Fandi: Don’t call them stars

JOHOR DARUL TAKZIM coach-cum-manager Fandi Ahmad made a passionate plea not to give “star status” to his players after the big spenders could only manage a 1-0 win over a nine-man Perak at the Larkin Stadium last night.

“My team is not star-studded. There are no ‘star’ players in Johor Darul Takzim. The players are all the same. I appeal to the media to stop saying we are a star-studded team.

“This has put pressure on the players. I don’t want this to happen to Johor Darul Takzim. Yes. We have some good players … but they are not ‘stars’ … they are just normal players who have played at a higher level,” said Fandi after seeing his team struggle against Perak.

“I don’t want my players to be under pressure in matches. A lot has been said and written because we have signed several internationals and two good foreign players. It takes time to gel them into a cohesive unit.

“Football is a team game … not a game of one or two players. We had only one week to train together as most of them were away on international duty.

“These players need time to suit to our style of play. It is simply impossible to score six goals to win matches after a week’s training.”

Johor Darul Takzim have signed up national skipper Safiq Rahim, Safee Sali, Abdul Radzak twins Aidil Zafuan and Zaquan Adha, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Azmi Muslim for their M-League campaign this season.

Spaniard Daniel Guiza, who helped Spain win the 2008 European Championship and former Lazio midfielder Simone Del Nero are the two foreign signings in the team.

Johor Darul Takzim were beaten 3-2 by Pahang in their opening match in Kuantan last Tuesday after leading 2-0 at half-time.

Their next match is another tough one – against last season’s treble winners Kelantan who retained the League title apart from winning the FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup.

Sabahawks need to plug leaky defence

SABAH’S leaky defence is a cause for concern as the side were defeated in the Premier League yesterday, going down 1-3 to Sime Darby.
The Sabahawks, coached by David McCreery, had gone ahead after a headed goal from foreign striker Koh Traore in the 15th minutes but Fahrul Razi Kamaruddin equalised in the first half injury time.

Croatian forward Karlo Primorac made it 2-1 after 57 minutes before Zamri Chin’s deflected shot 10 minutes later cemented victory at the MPS Stadium in Selangor.

Team manager Alijus Sipil said the third goal was unfortunate but not the previous two.

“Poor defending and lapse of concentration led to the equaliser and then (Sime Darby’s) second … it cost us the game,” said Alijus.

The defeat left Sabah eighth in the 12-team standing on three points but they will look to bounce back when they take on winless NS Betaria FC at Likas Stadium on Monday.

Meanwhile, Rhys David Weston will not be available for another week due to a hamstring injury suffered in the 2-1 win over SPA Putrajaya last week.

Rhys was signed to plug the gap left by the experienced Mohd Reithuddin Emran and Mafry Balang, both of whom were dropped for the 2013 season.

Amirul Hadi hopes to win back place in national team

HIS career took a turn for the worse last year but former national winger Amirul Hadi Zainal is ready to give it a go once again as he hopes to win back a place in the national team.

The 26-year-old was reduced to a fringe player for Selangor last season and it was no surprise when he opted to join newly promoted Pahang in the Super League this year – even if it meant he would be playing out of his favoured position.

“Coach (Dollah Salleh) explained to me before I joined that I’d be playing in central midfield. It will take some getting used to but I’ve played this position in the past. It is up to the coach where he wants to play me.

“My target here is simple – to be playing regularly once again. There is a lot more to learn for me and the team too,” said Amirul Hadi.

Pahang surged to the top of the Super League with two wins in two after coming back from two goals to defeat highly touted Johor Darul Takzim 3-2 before defeating Felda United 1-0 at the PJ Stadium yesterday.

Amirul Hadi was once so integral to national coach Datuk K. Rajagobal’s plans but found himself out of favour after falling down the pecking order at Selangor last year.

The Selangor-born winger-cum-central midfielder was part of the AFF Suzuki Cup winning squad in 2010 and featured regularly on the right flank in 2011.

“Of course, I want to play for Malaysia again. Every local player wants to don the national colours. But I have to do my part and prove I deserve to be in the team,” he added.

Fandi blast for Darul Takzim stars
Darul Takzim coach Fandi Ahmad has verbally lashed his star-studded team after they laboured to a narrow 1-0 Malaysia Super League win against Perak on Friday.

Although the result saw Fandi's charges - including big name signings Dani Guiza and Simone Del Nero - register their first points on the new season, the win was far from convincing.

Aidil Zafuan scored the only goal of the game for an indifferent Darul Takzim after 48 minutes, despite Perak playing with nine men for the entire second half following the earlier dismissals of Khairi Kiman and Hisyamuddin Mohamed Sha'ari.

Darul Takzim's victory came after an opening day loss to Pahang, but left Fandi far from happy and convinced that he knows where the problem lies.

"We got the three points but obviously there's still work to be done. I am not happy with the performance," the former Singapore international told reporters.

"Some players need to keep their ego in check. Football is a team game and at times we saw individuals. When they can pass, they didn't.

"Like I said, they need to keep their ego in check. Expectations are high on them. For me, footballers are all the same. A football player is a football player. There are no stars whatsoever," he added.

Next up for Darul Takzim is a tough away fixture at reigning Super League champions Kelantan on Tuesday, a high pressure game that will, once again, thrust Fandi and his expensively-assembled players well and truly in the spotlight - something which the 50-year-old is keen to avoid.

"There's so much hype about this team and I hope the media will stop calling us a 'star team'.

"We failed to match LIONSXII aggression"
Selangor coach Irfan Bakti believes his side lack of aggression was the reason behind Saturday's 1-0 defeat to LIONSXII in the Malaysia Super League.

The Red Giants were looking to make it two wins in a row at the Jalan Besar Stadium after beating Negri Sembilan 1-0 on Tuesday, but Fazrul Nawaz netted the only goal of the game in the 24th minute to hand the hosts all three points.

Although Selangor had plenty of possession, they seemed to lack any real creativity in the final third but Irfan believes it was their passive approach that had cost them ultimately.

"I can say that the LIONSXII were a little bit better than us tonight [Saturday]," he said.

"In the first half, they played with much more aggression than us. Even though they have many youngsters, you can see players like the number four [Isa Halim] and number eight [Hafiz Abu Sujad] are both very aggressive.

"We had good possession in the second half but it's difficult to win if you cannot get a shot in at goal.

Although he did label the LIONSXII's style of play as 'negative' ahead of Saturday's match after watching them toil to a 1-0 win over ATM in their opener, Irfan admits they are suited to such a style of play.

"The goal they scored was down to our lapse in concentration for just a few seconds," the ex-Terengganu boss added. "It was similar to how they scored against ATM.

"I saw them playing [against ATM] in Seremban and like tonight [Saturday], they were a very disciplined unit."
LIONSXII assistant coach K. Balagumaran believes the victory was down to the players adhering to the instructions they were given, and insisted there were signs of improvement after the unconvincing nature of Wednesday's triumph over Armed Forces.

"We could have played better as the game wore on," he said. "It was the same in our last game.
"But determination and tactical discipline in carrying out coach Sundram's [V. Sundramoorthy] plan was the key, especially with scoring through a set-piece. We identified their weaknesses and tried to exploit it.

"At least today [Saturday] we created chances compared to the last game. I thought with better finishing we could have killed the game off in the second half."

LIONSXII are next in action on Tuesday when they visit PKNS FC, while Selangor play away at Terengganu.

Perlis alleged suspicion of match fixing

ONLY two weeks into the new M-League season, and the first allegation of match fixing – involving Premier League’s Perlis – will be reported to the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) today.

Perlis team manager Shahruddin Ismail is to meet MACC officials this morning after the Northern Lions slumped to a shock 4-2 defeat to unheralded club side KL SPA at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca on Friday afternoon after leading 2-1.

It was Perlis’ second successive defeat, having lost 2-1 to Sarawak 2-1 at the Stadium Utama in Kangar in their opening match.

Last night, Perlis FA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim met head coach Yunus Alif over the team’s two defeats while today, Perlis will be at home to title contenders Sime Darby in another afternoon match.

“We were leading 2-1 and looked comfortable against KL SPA. However, it turned out to be an embarrassing outing for Perlis – thanks to some atrocious goalkeeping,” Yunus told sports247.my.

“I have never seen such goalkeeping in my coaching career. I have told Datuk Seri all that needs to be told. The manager will file report with the MACC on the matter this morning.”

Yunus, who coached T-Team last season, added that he will field second choice goalkeeper Muhd Zahid Mohamed for the match against Sime Darby while Ahmad Amizul Akhir will be the reserve.

First choice Muhd Shahruddin Ismail kept goal for Perlis in the first two matches has been rested indefinitely.

“We will be up against the title contenders. Sime Darby are a very strong side and there is no choice but to look for a win after two defeats. Our battle starts against Sime Darby,” added Yunus, who took charge of the a week before the season kicked-off.

Butler slams disrespectful Hodak

T-TEAM manager-cum-coach Peter Butler celebrated his team’s 1-0 win over last season’s treble winners Kelantan with a tinge of sadness following a heated exchange of words with his Kelantan counterpart Bojan Hodak.

The Englishman revealed that the Croatian used a four letter word on his late mother who died 20 years ago of terminal cancer.

“I don’t understand Croatian but he forgets I have two coaches who are from Croatia helping me out with T-Team. They translated what was said. They, too, are upset with what was said,” Butler told sports247.my.

The two Croatians with T-Team are Dado Kondic, who is the goalkeepers coach and Sebastian Knapic, who is the fitness coach.

Butler and Hodak were seen exchanging heated words in the first half and had to be restrained by their respective team officials.

“I have the utmost respect for all coaches and managers or team officials but I just could not take it when he took it out on my late mother. My mother died 20 years ago of terminal cancer. She died within seven weeks after she was diagnosed.

“This incident happened in the first half after we had gone ahead. Probably he could not take that. Winning and losing is all part and parcel of football. If he cannot take defeat he should not be handling a football team.”

T-Team, known as Titans for the new season, scored in the eighth minute through Mohd Aizulridzwan Razali’s strike which turned out to be the winner – making up for the team’s defeat to Perak through an own goal deep into injury time.

“I was very close to my mum. She was a wonderful woman who used to help people, especially the needy. What wrong did she do to deserve such remarks? The family should be left out in football matches.

“Just because he speaks a foreign language does not mean he can say what he wants. He (Hodak) forgot that I have two Croatian coaches in my team. It is disgusting to know what he said about my late mother…someone who is dead.”

On his team’s win against the treble champions, Butler said: “It was discipline and tactical display that won us the match. Tactically we were superior.”

T-Team’s next match is against Charity Shield winners Armed Forces away.

Win not good enough for Satia

ARMED FORCES manager-coach B. Satiananthan wasn’t satisfied with his Gladiators despite the 3-1 win over PKNS at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.

Instead, he has told his charges that they will need to buck up before their next match against T-Team at Paroi Stadium on Tuesday.

“It‘s good to get the three points but it was a bad performance. I am not happy with the boys and they have been made aware of this. We only took control of the match after PKNS were reduced to 10 men.

“Maybe it was their attitude in approaching the game. It was as if they thought playing PKNS is easier than previous games,” said Satiananthan.

Satiananthan also added that the tight scheduling has taken its toll on the players as they have played three matches already in a space of eight days. He also reckoned that his medical team would need to put in more hours to get the players at optimum levels.

Armed Forces had opened the 2013 M-League campaign with a penalty shootout win over Kelantan in the Charity Shield but lost 1-0 to LionsXII in the first Super League match of the season.

The Gladiators were quick of the mark yesterday as Marlon Alex James netted a penalty in the 7th minute. However, PKNS got themselves back into the game 27th minute. Marlon added two more goals to silence his critics just minutes after Patrick Ronaldinho received his second yellow card for diving.

“Many have criticised him after the LionsXII game but I have faith in him. He is not fully fit and we have to help him reach that. He is an important player and we can’t do without him.

“Hairuddin Omar was out today after complaining of strains in his hip, calf and thigh. It may be a couple of weeks till he gets back. It is time for the others to step up.

“I’m happy with R. Surendran’s contribution since he came on for Marlon. He worked hard and chased the loose ball,” said Satiananthan.

WHILE revealing first choice goalkeeper Al Hafizh Hamzah is out for at least two weeks with a groin injury, Johor Darul Takzim manager-cum-coach Fandi Ahmad wants to bring only “fighters” to face treble champions Kelantan in Kota Bahru on Tuesday.

Hafizh sustained the injury in Johor Darul Takzim’s shock 3-2 defeat to newly promoted Pahang in Kuantan last Tuesday.

“Hafizh is out for two weeks at least. He picked up a groin injury in Kuantan. That is why he is not even in the list against Perak,” said the Singaporean after seeing his team labour to a 1-0 win at the Larkin Stadium.

With Johor Darul Takzim still struggling to get their footing right after two matches into the Super League season, Fandi is aware facing Kelantan will be a mammoth task.

“I need fighters for the Kelantan match. It will be a very, very tough match for us. Playing in front of their partisan fans will be a real test of character for the players, especially the new ones.

“Many have faced such an environment with their previous teams. Still, it will be a test of nerves. Matches against Kelantan are different. I will try to pick my team for the trip.”

Johor Darul Takzim, touted as the favourites this season following the signing of several national players – national skipper Safiq Rahim (from Selangor), striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (Kelantan), Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak, Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak and Azmi Muslim (all from Armed Forces) – have struggled to get their act right.

Against Pahang, the Southern Tigers led 2-0 in the first half but crumbled after the break and conceded three goals and on Saturday the hosts struggled before snatching the winner through Aidil Zafuan in the 48th minute after Perak were reduced to nine players by the 44th minute when Khairi Kiman and Hisyamuddin Shaari were sacked two yellow card offences.

Asked on why centreback Tharmimi Saiban was missing from his list against Perak, Fandi said: “The player needed rest” as there is still a long way to go for the season.

“Where possible, the players will be given rest as we try to get the right combination. There is nothing to be alarmed about the outcome of the first two matches.

“Perak came at us with a mission – a draw. This made things difficult for us and I admit that that we need to do a lot more work. But we showed discipline on the field.”

MARLON ALEX JAMES wants the fans to cut him some slack.

The 36-year-old responded to critics in the best manner with a hattrick against PKNS at the Shah Alam Stadium last night. Critics have had a field day after the veteran target man missed a string of chances in the 1-0 loss to LionsXII last Tuesday.

While he feels good to have scored three, he believes that the best is yet to come, but quickly dismissed any ambitions of winning the Golden Boot award this year.

“This is only my second full game. I did not train at all during pre-season. These opening matches are like a pre-season to me. I still feel a bit stiff and have strains but it is getting better.

“It would take at least six to seven matches for me to get back to top fitness,” said James.

With the hattrick yesterday, James tops the scoring charts in the M-League. He was among the leading goal scorers in the Premier League last season while he topped the charts in the season-end Malaysia Cup.

“It is nice score goals again but collecting three points is more important. I’m not looking to be top scorer in the league. How the team fare is more important,” said James.

“Overall it was a better performance today for the team than against LionsXII. We can get better and have to work our socks off to get there.”

PKNS coach: Where’s the sportsmanship?

PKNS coach Abdul Rahman Ibrahim believes the referee spoilt the game in their 3-1 defeat to Armed Forces at the Shah Alam Stadium yesterday.

Import forward Patrick Ronaldinho received his marching orders after being shown his second yellow card in the 60th minute for diving in search of a penalty. The score was tied at 1-1 at the time as two quick goals by Marlon Alex James followed as the Gladiators took charge of the game.

However, Abdul Rahman clarified that while he couldn’t contest the referee’s decision, all he wants is “sportsmanship” so that the match would have still been interesting.

“I’m asking for sportsmanship for the better of the game. That decision was not incorrect but it surely killed the game.

“It is a foul no doubt but there were times Marlon got off for elbowing our players,” said Abdul Rahman, who had two stints as national coach – in the 1980s and 1990s.

The club side have now lost both their Super League matches thus far and Abdul Rahman conceded that they need to get their act right sooner rather than later. PKNS lost their opening match 2-1 to Kelantan after the Red Warriors scored a late goal last Tuesday.

“We have to re-group and come back strongly after two defeats. It is not going to be an easy season for us but we have so much room to improve,” he added.

Things are unlikely to get easier for PKNS as on Tuesday they host Lions XII, who have recorded 1-0 wins over Armed Forces and Selangor in their opening two matches. Then they have to play T-Team away on Friday followed by Johor Darul Takzim on Jan 22.
