Sungai Ara flow into Penang FA Cup final
sports247.my
NIGERIAN Kazeem Adeolu scored a brace and had an assist to help steer Sungai Ara FC into the Penang FA Cup final last night.
The 19-year-old winger’s exploits allowed the Division 3 champions Sungai Ara to defeat first division side Bukit Gelugor 3-0 at the USM Stadium.
Sungai Ara, who had won each of their four previous matches in the knockout competition by identical 2-0 scorelines, shot into the lead after just three minutes.
Kazeem combined with Mohammad Asyraf to set up Syamil Masdokhi, whose low shot from a tight angle squirmed past Bukit Gelugor’s experienced goalkeeper Jerry Arokiasamy.
It was all one-way traffic as Bukit Gelugor failed to impose themselves in midfield.
Kazeem should have scored when put through clear on goal in the 20th minute but shot straight at Jerry.
But the Nigerian teenager, who is studying at Stamford College Penang, got on the scoresheet with a sweetly struck freekick in the 34th minute.
Asyraf should have buried the tie minutes later when Jerry slipped on the ball, but the striker shot wide from two metres out with an open goal in front of him.
Kazeem put the tie to bed seven minutes into the second half when he fired a stiff shot from the top of the box to make it 3-0.
The only blot to Sungai Ara’s performance was R. Vickneswaran’s sending off after needlessly collecting his second booking.
“The big win is not a surprise as we knew that our young squad is very talented,” said Sungai Ara manager Zainol Abidin Ahmad.
“We have managed to reach the final without conceding a goal. I am confident that Sungai Ara can go on to add the FA Cup to our Division 3 title.”
Sungai Ara FC have won the Penang FA Cup twice – in 2000 and 2002.
The second semifinal between Nibong Tebal FA and Baharol Alam FC will be played at the USM Stadium tonight.

MACC officers speak to referee
KELANTAN CORRESPONDENT
SPOT THE SPY: MACC officers were sitting in the stands during the match.
OFFICERS from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru last night to observe the Super League match between treble winners Kelantan and Johor Darul Takzim.
It is learnt MACC officers headed straight for the referee’s dressing room after the match ended 1-1 and spoke to referee Suhaimi Mat Hassan.
It is believed the MACC officers were acting on a tip-off about bizarre betting trends surrounding the match which was billed as “the clash of the week”.
Two superb goals – a thunderbolt after a brilliant solo run from Kelantan’s Mohamad Norfarhan Muhammad and a long-range Daniel Guiza freekick – meant the game ended all square.
Neither goalkeeper could be faulted for the goals last night, but that was not the case when Perlis met KL SPA FC in the Premier League last Friday.
Perlis coach Yunus Alif believed there was some “hanky panky” as his side threw away a 2-1 lead to lose 4-2 and described the goalkeeping as “shocking” and the worst he has seen in his career.
He benched his first choice goalkeeper when the Northern Lions met Sime Darby FC on Monday, but it didn’t help as they lost 2-0.
Perlis handed over a video tape of the KL SPA match to MACC officers in Kangar yesterday.
It is only two weeks into the new M-League season and things are already heating up.

PKNS in shock win over Lions
By G. ARAVIND

SUPER LEAGUE bottom team PKNS produced an upset at the Shah Alam Stadium today by beating table toppers Lions XII 1-0 to record their first win this season.
PKNS, who had lost their previous two matches, were on the defensive for most of the first half but took an offensive approach in the next 45 minutes to deservedly come out tops.
The southerners had the lion’s share of goal scoring opportunities in the first half although PKNS had their moments.
Lions XII forward Fazrul Nawaz could have put the southerners in front in the 25th minute but his grounder missed the target by just a few inches.
The best chance of the half fell to another Lions XII player, Gabriel Quak, but the midfielder’s shot was wide off the mark after he was left free at the edge of the box. The first half ended scoreless.
PKNS took the game to Lions XII in the second half by pushing up more players in the opponents’ half and they were almost rewarded in the 70th minute through Mohd Fazli Baharuddin whose shot was blocked by the Lions XII defence.
PKNS’ offensive strategy finally paid off in the 78th minute when substitute Mohd Nazrin Syamsul’s left foot shot from outside the penalty box found the back of the net.
The home team managed to hold onto the lead until the whistle to get their first three points of the campaign.

Neighbours to clash in Penang final
PENANG CORRESPONDENT
Tanjung Bunga Rangers players celebrate reaching the final
NEIGHBOURS Tanjung Bunga Rangers and Belia Asas Bersatu (BAB) were forced to produce their best football before booking their tickets to the final of the Penang Under-19 Amer Yusoff Challenge Cup at the Polo Ground yesterday.
A goal in each half from Ismer Nizam and Syafiq Yusri allowed Tanjung Bunga to squash the spirited display from Rifle Range during their 2-0 semifinal victory.
The real hero for Tanjung Bunga was their goalkeeper Mohamed Rozaimi, who saved a twice-taken penalty by Rifle Range’s Mohammad Nabil with the score still at 1-0.
“The penalty was the turning point of the match as the pressure grew on Rifle Range to score while we began to believe that this would be our day,” said Tanjung Bunga coach Noorshukri Hashim.
Tanjung Bunga will meet the team from their neighbouring Tanjung Tokong district, the pre-tournament favourites BAB, in the final.
BAB, who did not concede a single goal in their four group matches, fell behind to Mohamad Shahri’s 26th minute strike during their semi-final against Penang Youth Sports Club (PYSC).
But BAB turned the tide after earning a controversial penalty in the 71st minute. Amir Asyraf Basri made no mistake from the spot to equalise, and Al-Hafiz Harun and Said Sayed Ammar got on the scoresheet late on for a 3-1 victory.
“PYSC made life difficult for us, but I always had faith in my players’ ability and superior fitness to pull us through,” said BAB coach Suhaimi Ismail.
“I lost eight first-team players to the Penang President’s Cup (Under-20) squad before the semifinals and it disrupted the rhythm of the squad. I hope we can improve the teamwork and on-pitch communication in time for the final.”

Thirty attend under-16 youth football clinic
Posted on December 1, 2012, Saturday
IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE: Sarawak Football Development Programme, technical director Alan Vest (second left) stressing a point during the recent football clinic conducted for 30 promising young players at Miri Stadium.
MIRI: Thirty promising footballers attended a four-day under-16 football clinic organised by Sarawak Football Development Programme (SFDP).
“Our objective is to identify talents for SFDP and to be drafted into MSNS Elite Centres in Kuching and Miri,” said SFDP project manager Lucas Kalang Laeng.
SFDP was a grassroots sports development programme held under the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) in collaboration with the Education Department and the Sarawak Football Association (SFA).
Lucas said the clinic which was held at the Sports Village and Miri Stadium exposed the youths on theory, practical sessions and the rule of the game that is aimed at improving the players’ techniques and term tactical play.
The panel of instructors and coaches involved in the clinic were SFDP technical director Alan Vest, northern zone chief coach Pengiran Bala, central zone coodinators Patrick Philip Moss from Sibu, Jimba Aji of Sarikei, Miri SFDP Youth Centre coach Ramjee Sarjan from Miri and goal keeper coach, Mohd Ikwam of Miri.
“We are working at a very low level – the schools, where we drew from the Under-12 from 60 centres in primary schools, and the Under-18 from 45 centres in secondary schools,” Lucas said.
He added the job of identifying talented players rests on the coaches who see them (players) differently.
According to him, from next year onwards SFDP will change its strategy of controlling standards rather than the usual way of filling quotas in selecting young players for football development.
The players who attended the clinic are students from SMK Bakun, SMK Tatau, SMK Bintulu, SMK Asyakirin from Bintulu; SMK Lutong, SMK Merbau, SMK St Joseph from Miri; and SMK Patibum, SMK Merapok and SMK Mendamit.

SFDP shortlist 67 young footballers

Lucas Kallang Laeng
KUCHING: Sarawak Football Development Programme (SFDP) had shortlisted 67 young footballers from all over the state for selection of trainees in Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) Elite Football Centres.
The shortlisted youngsters were identified during SFDP’s statewide talent scouting held last year and despite not making it into the President’s Cup or other youth football teams, they (players) can still have a shot at their dreams.
Not wanting to see their talents to go to waste, SFDP project manager Lucas Kallang Laeng said once selected, only 40 will get to join the elite centers to be set up in Southern Zone and Northern Zone.
“Thirty five players were identified from the Southern Zone which include areas in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei while the rest are from the Northern Zone,” he said.
“We hope to find more players for the state Sukma team…this is one of the main purpose of this programme,” said Lucas on the coming selection to be held at Telekom Training Centre football field of Jalan Sultan Tengah for the Southern Zone on Jan 16.
Selection for the Northern Zone will be held on Jan 28 at PETRONAS Sports Village, Miri.

Three Sarawak juniors with Harimau Muda B
by Edwin Chandra, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 8, 2013, Tuesday
KUCHING: Three of Sarawak’s junior footballers have reported for the Harimau Muda B squad and resumed training with the rest of the other national Under-19 trainees.
Sarawak Football Development Programme (SFDP) director, Lucas Kallang, disclosed that the three 18-year-olds were selected by Football Association Malaysia (FAM) talent scouts who were here during last year’s Sarawak Cup tourney in Miri.
“We are very proud of them. Their selection into the national junior squad has shown that we have players with great potential,” he said. The three players are Shirin Tambi previously from SMK Tabuan Jaya Sports School, Mohd Ibrahim Jobli from SMK Gedong and Mohd Hafiz Saperi from SMK Bako.
Ibrahim played as a winger for his school team while Shirin and Hafiz both played in the midfield before they joined the national junior squad.
According to Lucas, many other local junior players also impressed FAM’s talent scouts but only the trio were eventually selected.
Kallang also observed that there are a good number of junior players included in the state teams for the President’s Cup and Premier League.
National Harimau Muda A chief coach Ong Kim Swee announced during his visit to Sarawak last month that the three local juniors were selected to join the B or back-up squad under coach Mazlan Wahed.
Incidentally, Ong and Mazlan were teammates in Sarawak’s Bujang Senang outfit back in the 1990s.
Shirin, Ibrahim and Hafiz bring the number of state junior players who are attached to national junior squads to six.
The other three – Saiful Wazizi Mohd Ali, Rahman Ismawi and Mohd Haziq Hossain – are currently with the privately owned Frenz United Football Academy (FUFA).
Saiful, Rahman and Haziq had their taste of international football when they represented Frenz United Malaysia in the recent Frenz International Football Championship which saw participation by four foreign teams from Indonesia, Iran, Czech Republic and Thailand.
Frenz United Malaysia defeated the National Under-15 side to finish third in the tournament and bagged the US$15,000 prize money.
