malaysian king of soccer "raja bola" passes away football.thestar.com.my/2012/09/29/goalscorer-supreme-national-football-legend-ghani-passes-away-at-age-77/Goalscorer supreme and national football legend Ghani passes away at age 77 KUALA LUMPUR: Football legend Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Minhat, the ‘Raja Bola’ of Malaysia who passed away yesterday at the age of 77, may well hold the unofficial world record for scoring the most goals in the least number of matches. In 1963, the prolific Ghani achieved the all-time national record of 106 goals in just 15 games – a phenomenal average of seven goals a match. During his heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, Abdul Ghani played in the inside forward position and was a wily striker feared by opponents. Ghani was born on Dec 23, 1935 in Kampung Solok, Negri Sembilan, and attended Princess Road School (now Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Raja Muda) at the age of 10. He represented the school, playing barefoot as was the norm then. His joined St. John’s Institution in Kuala Lumpur two years’ later and starred for the school team. In 1951, his talent was spotted by local police officers who gave him his first football boots, a rarity then because only professional footballers could afford them. At the age of 17, Ghani was invited to join the Police Depot team in the Selangor League. He was asked to play on the left wing even though he was right-footed but Ghani used the opportunity to develop his left-foot skills as well. In 1955, Ghani was picked to play for Selangor in the HMS Malaya Cup. He helped Selangor beat Singapore 2-1 in the final, scoring one of the two goals. Shortly after, he was called up by national coach Neoh Boon Hean to represent Malaya in a friendly against Cambodia. His first appearance for the national team was an impressive one as Ghani scored an amazing seven goals to help Malaya whip Cambodia 9-2. The following year, he scored his first goal in the inaugural 1957 Merdeka Tournament, held on the eve of Independence Day, with an amazing 40-metre screamer against Vietnam but his efforts failed to land the trophy as Hong Kong emerged champions. Ghani overcame his disappointment the following year when he helped the national team win the tournament ahead of Hong Kong and Indonesia. Malaya retained the trophy in 1959, beating Indonesia 2-1 in the final, with Ghani playing a key role in the success. As his reputation grew, Ghani, who played for the nation from 1956-63, was bestowed the title ‘Raja Bola’ by the FA of Selangor for his brilliant performances. His career high achievement came when Malaya won the bronze medal at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta. Ghani scored all four goals in the 4-1 win over South Vietnam. He continued to play for Selangor alongside M. Chandran, Stanley Gabrielle, Robert Choe and Arthur Koh over the years as the Red Giants ruled rampant over the game. Ghani was also sent abroad for training and had stints with clubs in England (West Ham United, Arsenal, Spurs), Wales (Cardiff City) and Germany (Eintracht Frankfurt) in 1962. In 1967, Ghani helped Selangor qualify for the inaugural Asian Club Championship. They made it to the final after beating Tungsten Mining FC of South Korea, thanks to a goal from Ghani, but Selangor then lost 2-1 to Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv. Ghani retired as a player in style by scoring all eight goals in Selangor’s thumping 8-1 win over Pahang in the 1968 Malaysia Cup final. He ended his career with an excellent record of over 100 goals for the country and more than 300 for Selangor. Ghani also made a successful transition to coaching with Selangor and the national team (1971-76) after earning his coaching licence from FIFA in 1969. As coach, he led Selangor to the Malaysia Cup title in 1971, 1972 and 1984. For his contributions to the nation and football, in particular, Ghani was bestowed the Darjah Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM), which carries the title Tan Sri, by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah in June. – Bernama from wikipedia Tan Sri Datuk Abdul Ghani Minhat (Jawi: ابدول غاني مينهات 23 December 1935 – 28 September 2012) was a football player who represented the team Selangor FA in the 1950s until the late 1960s. He played as a striker and winger while representing Singapore and Malaysia. He was sent by FAM to undergo a training session at Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany and other countries. He was known as the King of Soccer[1] and is considered one of Malaysia's greatest football players. Ghani currently resides in Negeri Sembilan. Ghani currently holds the all time record in Malaysia with Ghani scoring 106 goals in only 15 games and Metin secilmis scoring 11 goals in a 15-1 victory over the Philippines. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Ghani_Minhat

SOFT-SPOKEN WAN ZACK GRATEFUL FOR DOUBLE HONOURS His on-field displays may be a thing of poetic beauty, but when asked to speak, it turns out that Wan Zack Haikal is a man of few words. That did not stop the Harimau Muda winger from becoming the biggest individual winner at the Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League Awards Night 2012 on Sunday evening, however, where he walked away with the YEO’S People Choice and YEO’S Young Player of the Year awards. Wan Zack’s first season in the S.League has been an impactful one, as he often drove his team on from either flank and earned both the adulation of his fellow Malaysians and the respect of others. The 21-year-old duly paid tribute to those who have supported him as he spoke of his achievements. “I am very happy to win these two awards tonight,” expressed a grateful Wan Zack. “Thank you to the fans who voted for me (for the People Choice Award); I could not have won this without the Harimau Muda fans. I don’t think there is a lot more I can say!” Speaking on his feelings on winning the Young Player of the Year crown and his future directions, he revealed pride on the Harimau Muda’s achievement for managing fourth place in the S.League. He added that his focus is now on the Malaysia national team’s preparations for the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup, from which he was granted special permission to leave so that he could come to Singapore for the Awards Night, held this year at ITE College East. The Great Eastern Player of the Year award went to veteran forward Aleksandar Duric of Tampines Rovers, the third time he has won this prize since doing so in 2007 and 2008. As Duric is currently in Tokyo with the Singapore national team training for the Suzuki Cup, Stags team manager Zulkarnaen Zainal collected the award on his behalf. Zulkarnaen revealed that he had a hunch one of the three nominees from his club would win the award, as midfielders Jamil Ali and Ahmad Latiff Khamarudin were also in contention. “I got a feeling one of them would win; we were 60% there already and we’ve cornered the market!” he laughed. “I feel very happy that Aleks won the Player of the Year. If the S.League can provide 3 trophies, I want to give the award to all three of our players!” Vjeran Simunic, the flamboyant figure guiding Bruneian side DPMM FC, proved true to form as he spoke to the media after receiving his recognition in the form of the MIKASA Coach of the Year award. “I feel very nice and emotional,” remarked the Croatian. “We bravely targeted making the top five, and the top five teams were all very strong until the last moment. My opinion is we are one of the best teams in the S.League. “I want to thank especially the Bruneian players in the team, they have shown that people should not look down on Bruneians. Yes, we have import players, but the Bruneian players have done so much of the work for the team to make me win this award.” There were moments of humour at the Awards Night as well, the most memorable of the lot being Norihiro Kawakami’s acceptance speech for the Singapore Pools Fair Play Award, which went to Albirex Niigata (Singapore). Pushed into going on stage by club chairman Daisuke Korenaga, the 25-year-old took much effort to keep a straight face as he read out his speech. “Thank you, S.League,” he said, haltingly. “Thank you, Singapore. Thank you, Singapore Pools, for this award… And thank you, S.League, again!” Waga Assistant Referee of the Year winner Eugene Chan gave special mention to his wife in his acceptance speech, noting that it was the first time in five years she was attending the event. “We have to spend a lot of time training and refereeing, and that means the family’s had to make sacrifices in terms of having less time with me,” he said, before adding “Thank you.” Quizzed on the spot by Awards Night host Colette Wong about the abuse he has to take from fans while on duty, a cool-looking Chan showed no hard feelings at all. “We usually try to block the jeers out and make it just part of the noise,” he commented. “But after some time, it has become an inspiration, a motivation for us to keep going. So I should say thank you to the fans!” The FAS Special Award went to Mr. Maniam Murugiah, who was the former deputy chairman of the Referees Committee until he had requested to relinquish his position recently. Mr. Maniam, who has extensive experience in refereeing and referee development, shared his proudest moment in his career. “It was the day that I got a call from the AFC saying that my referee was selected for the World Cup in 2002. That was the happiest moment for me.” Having spent so much time working for others, Mr. Maniam is looking forward to having some time for himself now that he has stepped down from his post. “What I am going to do is to play golf!” he quipped. www.sleague.com/news-features/news/2012/november/soft-spoken-wan-zack-grateful-for-double-honours

Development programme looking to take Malaysian football to the next level Malaysia’s aim of becoming a football powerhouse in future will be aided by the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) The National Football Development Programme (NFDP), set up after Malaysia’s success at the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, is confident of producing quality footballers for the future. With the government putting aside RM10 million a year for grassroots development, NFDP’s immediate aim is to prepare a team that can qualify for the 2019 Under-17 World Cup. Datuk Razali Ibrahim, the country’s Deputy Sports Minister, said there are 1,647 players between the ages of seven and twelve currently under the programme nationwide. “There are 14 existing excellence centres and we plan to add another 14 next year,” he said after chairing the NFDP committee meeting yesterday. “It is important that those under the programme concentrate only on football. We will make a request to the Education Ministry to bar these players from playing other sports.” “Footballers are normally good in other sports but we preferably want them to focus on developing their skills.” Razali is also hopeful that the funds will eventually be increased in the future, but is aware that first and foremost the programme needs to show that it can develop budding talents into something more. “The programme needs to produce quality players before it can request for additional funds.” “We are currently working on a small budget compared to South Korea, who have allocated US$100 million (RM300 million) for football development.” www.goal.com/en-my/news/3896/malaysia/2012/10/03/3421387/development-programme-looking-to-take-malaysian-football-to

Malaysia set U-17 and U-20 World Cup target In the last two years, 14 training centres – one in each state – have been set up under the National Football Development Programme. The centres, each catering to 120 children in the Under-10 and Under-12 categories, hold three training sessions per week. The best talents from the Under-10 children will compete in the MyKid tournament while the Under-12 children will take part in the Champions of Champions competition. The most promising talents from these 14 centres will then be earmarked to join the state’s sports schools, Bukit Jalil Sports School, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School and Gambang Sports School. Razali said it was time the programme showed progress after getting RM20mil from the government in the last two years. “It’s time to produce results and show what we have done with the funds,” he said. This year, 14 more centres – making it two per state – will be operational to cater to more children. “We will also liaise with the Ministry of Education to allow children from the centres to play football as their one-student-one-sport programme. We want to make sure these young talents focus on football.” Razali added that the current national Under-19 team will head for Antalya, Turkey, for a month-long playing and training stint, including six competitive matches. football.thestar.com.my/2012/10/03/malaysia-set-u-17-and-u-20-world-cup-target/National Football Development Programme website : pembangunanbolasepaknegara.blogspot.com/School of Sports (SSN) of the Ministry of Education Malaysia Here is a list of ELIGIBLE football center at the State Sports School under the Ministry of Education which is under the initiative of the National Football Development committee.
