IT was Easter Sunday yesterday and while some kids may have trooped to the beaches or were doing egg hunts, there were 72 who chose to spend it in the football pitch under the heat of the sun.
Players as young as seven years old came to the second day of football clinic initiated by Chieffy Caligdong’s Football Para sa Bayan at Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) in Labangon.
This was a clinic for a cause for Caligdong's Ten Moves campaign in coordination with the organizers of the Bro Football Festival slated April 26-28.
Aside from the DBTC players that were present last Saturday, there were also booters from Bright Academy, University of Southern Philippines- Foundation, Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu and University of San Jose Recoletos as the clinic was open to players from other schools.
Caligdong as described by most parents, was hands-on and integrated the style of running football with emphasis on one touch execution.
“The kids were taught what to do on their first touch. It's only either they pass or shoot,” said Bro Football organizer Engr. Rodney Orale.
Drills were mostly on short passes and heading techniques that were made very friendly to the kids.
The first to third graders had their basic dynamics of the sport and had dribbling exercises; the fourth to sixth graders had body positioning and some endurance plays; while the secondary players were more exposed to footwork drills.
Among the participants present in the weekend clinic was 10-year-old Luis Joaquin Buyco, who was part of the champion team of DBTC in the Players 10 category of the recently concluded Aboitiz Football Cup.
He looks up to Caligdong as his football icon who taught them that football is a fast game and they have to train hard but as kids they also have to enjoy it.
“I enjoyed it even if it was very hard. The training on shooting and passing was so advanced,” said Buyco.
Other participants in the secondary were two Little Azkals members, Moisel Alforque and Lawrence Colina.
