Striker Bambang quits Indonesian national teamPosted on April 3, 20130
JAKARTA: Striker Bambang Pamungkas has decided to retire from international football after playing for the Indonesian national team for 13 years. The 32-year-old said the decision to retire was made a day before Indonesia’s Asian Cup Group C qualifying match against Saudi Arabia on March 23. Bambang, a scorer of 31 goals in 83 appearances for Indonesia, added that he contemplated retirement during the AFF Suzuki Cup in Malaysia last year. “Now it is official that I am retiring from the national team,” Bambang wrote in his website, Sportsatu. Bambang is no stranger to Malaysian fans, having played for Selangor in 2005. He helped the Red Giants clinch a treble – Division Two, Malaysia Cup and FA Cup – the same year with compatriot Elie Aiboy. In his parting words, Bambang apologised to the fans for not being able to help the Indonesian national team to win any prestigious titles. — Bernama
