Cook To Play For Philippine National Team
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Bakersfield women's soccer player Sarah Cook (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Las Vegas HS) will be playing for the Philippine National Team as the team takes part in the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) qualifying matches for the 2015 World Cup.
The Philippines will be playing in group B of the tournament, in Bangladesh, with Thailand, Iran, and Bangladesh. If the Philippines wins the bracket, we will advance to join Australia, South Korea, and China for the Women’s Asian cup finals in 2014. Five teams from that group will go onto the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Cook was contacted by the Philippine National Team during CSUB's 2012 fall quarter and was asked to try-out for the team in Fullerton, Calif.. After the two week try-out in Fullerton, Cook made the team.
The Phillipine National Team is made up of some players that were born and raised in the Philippines and many from the U.S. and Canada. To be eligible to play for the Phillipines, a player who has a grandparent or parent that was born in the Philippines, the player becomes eligible to become a dual citizen. Only recently has the Phillipine National Team started to recruit players from the U.S. and Canada. The team is made up of many “Fil-Am” players, which are both Filipino and American. Many of the players had to get dual citizenship in order to play for the team.
Cook, a defender for the Roadrunners, has started 32 of 34 matches for Bakersfield since joining the squad in 2011. Cook leaves for the Philippines May 1 and will be training in Manila until the AFC Tournament. The tournament will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from May 21-26.
"Congratulations to Sarah for being selected as a member of the Phillipine national team," said Bakersfield head coach Melissa Phillips. "Not only is it a tremendous honor for her, but showes the caliber of players we are bringing into our program at Bakersfield. I am confident that she will be a tremendous asset with her work ethic and leadership."
Cook's Roadrunner squad begins its first season in the Western Athletic Conference this Fall.
