I've been reading some stuff on the internet about the Time Magazine and how stupid the Philippines is. Despite the obviously false affiliation to Time Magazine, I truly believe a lot of the message is actually correct despite what people say. It got people especially on FB to argue against the fake front cover that the Philippines is stupid (the false), and many tears were thrown at Time Magazine..... However, the actual question that most did not question was why 11 million people did vote for Binay (the truth) and why no one is revolting against something stupid like this. Oh the irony...... BTW sorry Binay supporters but....... dunno....
Is it true that Erap's going to be mayor for Manila? My Filam perspective says this is an embarrassment to the Philippines. However, what does that actually mean to Manila and the Philippines as a whole anyway... Sometimes I feel I'm too naive about stuff like this.

The very plain answer to this is because Filipinos do not vote by "political affiliation"(ex. United States: Democrat or Republican or if you're slightly off the grain, Independent), or issue based(ex. more government or less government, pro gay marriage or anti gay marriage etc.) rather the majority of Filipino voters is "personality" based(ex. Vice Pres. Jejomar BINAY was a "good" VP therefore his daughter Nancy BINAY must be the same as her father regardless if she knows anything or nothing, Manny Pacqiao is a boxing idol so he "must" or could be a good congressman(btw his wife is now in office too) and this goes on and on with movie or TV personalities winning political offices for the simple fact people know their names and not their opponents. Yes Erap is now Manila's mayor... Read here if you want to get discouraged even more: ph.news.yahoo.com/philippine-massacre-clan-enjoys-election-wins-103117195.html

Connect the dots. There are counter-arguments on this notion, though. In my hometown, Davao City, where the Duterte family, especially the Mayor, Rodrigo Duterte, reigned the city for decades. Ever since Mayor Rody came in power, the city's peace and order situation was so well-felt, that it was reputed as one of the most liveable cities in Asia and Mindanao's "safe haven". The city became a model of other cities when it established the Anti-Smoking Ordinance and the Firecracker Ban, which brought great benefit to the city (we have very low smoking-related deaths and no cases of firecracker-related injuries in the past 10 years!). Foreign Investors are slowly coming in here, and I can say the city will surpass the Manila and Cebu in terms of economics in maybe 10 years time. All we lack now is a football stadium. This is the case when voters vote their leaders by their reputation not merely because of personality. What I see now though, is that the younger voters (those around 18-25 y.o., myself included) are getting wiser with their choices because of their use of social media and very aggressive information campaigns of the mainstream media. They were indeed disappointed with how the elder voters (which still constitutes the bulk of the overall electorate) vote in such manner (such case is Nancy Binay in the senate and the Ampatuan clan remaining in power in Maguindanao).

Counter arguments stellar? I merely pointed out how the average local voter chooses his/her candidate and the difference they have with a "western" (US and much of Europe)voter as shown in: The highest vote getting senatorial bet and winner Grace Poe. She basically won for the simple fact she is the daughter of movie star FPJ who many thought was cheated in the 2nd to last Presidential elections. You'd be hard pressed to know what political platform she has in her agenda. Like I said I'm not pointing out if its wrong or right rather pointing out to veryfatchocobo how it is in the Philippines. Of course no generality is absolute so there will be "counter arguments" as you said. Your example Rodrigo Duterte is a very colorful and effective mayor and truly deserves to be reelected BUT you mentioned HIS PERFORMANCE. After his first run of terms as mayor his daughter was voted as mayor and now his oldest son is climbing up the ladder as vice mayor. Do you mean they were voted in for THEIR performance or because of their fathers NAME? You see if they weren't a Duterte they would not have won their seats too. Don't sweat it KP, if I was from Davao I'd vote for Duterte too. And to those who don't know who he is here's a TIME article I read when it first came out in the earlt 2000's(I couldn't believe I found it). Wyatt Earp has nothing on Rodrigo "The Punisher" Duterte. It's a great read: www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,265480,00.html

It's a great read: www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,265480,00.html Let me react on this relating to the recent event last week wherein a Chinoy businesswoman was kidnapped in QC and was escorted by kidnappers all the way here in Davao City to claim ransom. When they attempted to claim ransom, the woman was rescued while the kidnappers were brought up by deadly force. newsdesk.asia/leader-of-kidnap-for-ransom-gang-among-slain-in-shootout/You'll be sorry, Wiking, if I voted for someone other than Duterte if I based my vote on PERSONALITY. I'm not that kind of voter. Critics against us Dabawenyos have sprung up since this incident, but we won't be moved as we understand this won't be attained without an effective leadership force.
