UNCG’s Cat Barnekow Finds Success on National Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former UNCG women's soccer standout Cat Barnekow (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) has continued playing soccer after graduating from UNCG in December and has made the Philippine National Women's soccer team.
"We are thrilled for Cat and her recent selection to the team that will represent the Phillipines in the upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers," said head coach Steve Nugent. "Since finishing here at UNCG, Cat has been working very hard to prepare herself to play at the highest level possible. She was one of a select few that were invited into the preseason camp for the Seattle Reign in Japan. We are very proud of Cat and wish her the very best."
Barnekow already helped the Malditas win the 2012 LA Vikings Cup hosted in California last November. Barnekow also was invited to the Seattle Reign preseason camp in Japan trying to earn a spot in the newly formed National Women's Soccer League. After three matches in Japan, Barnekow went to training camp for the AFC Women's Asian Cup qualifiers set in May. The Philippine Women's National Team is coached by Ernest Nierras and Barnekow made the 26-member squad.
The Malditas will play Iran on May 21, Thailand on May 23 and Bangladesh on May 25 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh for the Asian Women's Cup qualifiers. The top team from the group will advance to the 2014 Asian Women's Cup, which serves as a qualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Barnekow, whose mother is of Filipino decent, was a co-captain for the Spartans last season. She earned first team all-SoCon after finishing the season with four goals and a team-leading five assists. She was instrumental in helping UNCG put together a streak of six-straight shutouts, leading to the 2012 SoCon regular season title.
