RMU Women's Soccer Alumnus Maria Shipe to Represent the Philippines in FIFA World Cup Qualifying
Chicago – Robert Morris Women's Soccer alumnus Maria Shipe has been selected to represent the Philippines in the qualifying rounds of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup that are being held this month in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Shipe, a 2009 graduate of RMU, was one of 26 players chosen to participate in Philippines National Team training camp leading up to the nation's first Asian Football Confederation Cup (AFC) match versus Iran on May 21st. The Malditas will then play Thailand on May 23rd and Bangladesh on May 25th with the winner of the group advancing on to the final World Cup qualifying round of the AFC region. All three games will be held at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The Philippines Football Federation searched the United States for Philippine-Americans that were eligible and interested in participating on their national team. Shipe was invited to a preliminary training camp in California along with 57 other players in March after a scout learned that Maria's mother was born in the Philippines. The federation also held a similar camp with 58 players in November and a total of 26 players were selected from these two camps as well as with camps held in the Philippines to represent the national team.
"This event proves that you never know what may happen in life," said Shipe. "I have always wanted to keep playing soccer and this opportunity allows me to do that and at the highest possible level. My goal is to give everything I have for this team and hopefully we can advance one step closer to qualifying for the World Cup."
Maria played for the Eagles' Women's Soccer program from 2006-2008 after transferring in from Aurora University before her sophomore season. She was a three-time CCAC All-Conference selection and is sixth all-time at RMU in career points (114) and career goals (43).
