AFC License, A Must for Filipino Football Coaches
All Filipino football coaches must get their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) license as the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will be strictly implementing the rule that no one would be allowed to coach a team if they are not licensed by 2014.
According to Marlon Maro, head of the coaches education department of the PFF, the Philippines is the only country in Asia wherein anyone can coach a football team.
Maro, an A-licensed coach and also an AFC instructor, said that this mentality should be changed to further develop football and implement one system of play in the Philippines.
The AFC via the PFF offers three coaching certificates — A, B and C.
In a C-license course, a coach is taught how to organize, direct and conduct basic coaching practices targeting especially young players while a B-License course will teach a coach how to better understand individual or groups of players, tactics and the mental requirements of the game.
Being the highest in the classification, an A-license course will teach coaches of theoretical and practical contents. The course will focus on the coaches’ practical coaching abilities, knowledge and understanding of the theoretical contents of the game.
Before a coach can get his A-license, he must first have the B and the C.
Maro said that the PFF is offering these courses and that the provincial football associations should take advantage of this to help professionalize the mentality of football coaching in the country.
PFF is also partnering with the Department of Education to train their existing football coaches according to the PFF and AFC standards.
