football.com.ph/philippine-wnt-gear-aff-womens-championships/The Philippine Women’s National Team is set to embark on another journey in the 2016 AFF Women’s Championship which starts today, July 26th at the Mandalarthiri Stadium in Mandalay, Myanmar. The tournament will be the second straight year that head coach Leticia “Buda” Bautista will lead the Filipinas. The Philippines have quite the uphill climb in the competition as the Philippines are in Group A with favorites Thailand and Vietnam, along with Singapore. “There is always pressure especially as this is my second time coaching the national team pero kinakaya naman,” said Bautista on coaching the team. “The teams (we will face) will be hard to play against but with the right tactics and attitude, malay mo, bilog ang bola.” The Women’s team had a series of try-outs last June and selected 30 players that had a month-long training camp at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. After the training camp, 20 players were selected for the tournament. Natasha Alquiros, Jennizel Cabalan, Sara Castañeda, Alesa Dolino, Inna Palacios and Hanna Parado are the only remaining players from last year’s squad. Heather Cooke and Cristina De los Reyes make their return to the squad after missing out on last year’s tournament. New recruits Sidra Bugsch, Krystal De Ramos, Patricia Dull, Mary Duran, Caitlyn Kreutz, Claire Lim, Hali Long, Molly Manalansan, Irish Navaja, Shelby Salvacion, Patricia Tomanon, and Camille Wilson bolster the squad. “If the players follow the discipline, nothing is impossible,” added Bautista. “They just have to commit to the philosophy.” Assisting Bautista are former national team players Joyce Landagan and Marielle Benitez. The pair are coming off an impressive coaching run in the AFF Girls U-14 Regional Tournament, steering the side to a silver medal finish last month. “More than the coaching experience, it’s the playing experience (in the past) that I can share to them.” said Benitez. “(Based on the camp,) the team is slowly able to execute the system that Coach Buda wants.” Benitez captained the national side for several years and still played alongside all the holdovers from last year’s team. The Philippines first face Thailand today at 4:30 PM Manila time. Their next assignment will be against Vietnam on the 28th also at 4:30 PM Manila time, and then against Singapore on the 30th at 7:30 PM Manila time

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team are off to Myanmar to compete in the 2016 ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship. Hoping to at least reach the semi-finals for the first time in the competition’s history, the Philippines will be facing the likes of Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore in the group stages. Guiding the PWNT is head coach Buda Bautista. This is the second time Bautista takes over the squad as head coach. Previously, she had been the assistant to then-head coach Ernest Nierras, and had even been a player years ago. “Stress” was the word jokingly used by Bautista when asked how it felt coaching the PWNT for a second time. She then turned serious and stated that stress and pressure come together in coaching the national team. “Kinakaya, minamanage naman natin pero siyempre and mangyayari diyan it’s always a short preparation, the players you’re able to get. Tapos yun nga kung may players ka pero the preparation is quite short or not enough, then that is stressful on the part of the coaches. Kasi kumbaga meron kang technical, tactical, lalo na kung hindi ka fit, then kailangan mo i-incorporate ang (fitness)”, Bautista expounded. Out of a pool of roughly fifty players, and three weeks of intense training sessions, the current PWNT squad is made up of twenty Filipinas who are based either here in the Philippines and overseas in the U.S. Bautista shared, “Right now we have a lot of overseas players which is good. However, ang questionable lang which we’re still working on is yung fitness nila and then I guess they’re (also) a bit too young. In terms of a bit too young, hindi nagkakalayo sa local.” Bautista added that at least this time around, many of the locals are on their second tour of duty, and that many of the Filipina-Americans have had exposure abroad. In terms of actual play, Bautista admits that the current PWNT edition lacks goals from up front. Unlike last year, the team will be without the services of Joana Houplin, who has scored 12 goals for the national team since her debut three years ago, and Jesse Shugg, scorer of 3 goals in 8 appearances. Both strikers are unavailable due to personal and professional reasons. That problem, though, is boosted by the team’s wingers. “Yung wingers natin like si Krystal De Ramos, she had three goals na, iba naman yung strength ng team ngayon. Mas stronger yung (nasa) side pero we’re still working on the middle. We will maximize the side,” the two-time coach explained. Bautista believes that it’s all up to the players to show a “nothing is impossible” mentality in their upcoming tournament. In addition to that, she opined that her players’ high mental fortitude made improving the team’s fitness all the more tantamount. “They have to be match fit, not physically fit kasi different siya eh. Kailangan football fit ka. To improve your endurance you really need to work hard tapos recover na naman. We’re trying to simulate the schedule ng tournament. Makikita kung sino mabilis magrecover. Kung mabilis ka mag recover then you’re fit.” As mentioned earlier, the Philippines are up against Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore in the group stage. A tough group, when one considers that Thailand participated in the Women’s World Cup last year, while Vietnam are championship contenders in the region. “Definitely parang papasok ka sa butas ng karayom”, Bautista reflected. Nevertheless, Bautista did not eliminate the possibility of getting positive results through discipline and adhering to the team’s strategy and philosophy, while reiterating that intense defense would be impossible without proper fitness. “Definitely yung teams ngayon will be hard to play against pero siguro with the right tactics, with the right attitude, right perspective ng mga players, if they really commit with our concept, and malay mo bilog ang bola so maswertehan natin.” The PWNT face Thailand on matchday one (July 26, 2016; 4:00 PM KO), then Vietnam exactly two days later. Their final group stage game will be against Singapore (July 30, 2016; 7:00PM). In spite of the odds being stacked against the Philippines, Bautista and the rest of the PWNT will be gunning for a first semi-finals appearance — at the very least. *With reports from Mia Montayre tiebreakertimes.com/tbt/pwnt-mentor-bautista-focuses-on-fitness-eyes-results-against-asean-giants/62005Read more articles from tiebreaker times tiebreakertimes.com/tbt/alquiros-hails-team-chemistry-strength-ahead-of-2016-aff-womens-tourney/61996tiebreakertimes.com/tbt/coaching-senior-squad-a-brand-new-world-for-benitez/61993

Thailand 4-0 Philippines FT The Philippines’ women’s national football team took a 4-0 beating at the hands of Thailand earlier today in the first game of the 2016 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship held at the Mandalarthiri Stadium in the northern Myanmar city of Mandalay. Thailand, twice the winners of the regional competition including last year’s edition, took the lead in the 21st minute, just after a promising opening few minutes played by the daring Filipinas. Getting the n.a. rolling was Heather Cooke, who fired a shot routinely collected by the Thailand goalkeeper. Defender Alesa Dolino hoped to sustain the momentum with an audacious attempt. Renowned for her ability to shoot from astonishingly long distances, Dolino came a whisker away from shocking the champions. The FEU standout whipped a long shot from near the halfway line only for it to hit the crossbar. The Filipinas’ eyes the unfortunate break as the next attempt on goal led to a goal, albeit on the other side of the pitch. A free kick in the 21st minute changed the tone of the game as Thailand’s Pitsamai Sornsai bundled the ball into the goal that ricocheted off the crossbar, leaving Philippines’ goalkeeper and captain Inna Palacios helpless in denying the Thai forward. Facing a deficit, the Philippines tried to even the score almost instantly through Cristina delos Reyes’ effort. The UP talisman was in the end of a blazing move but was ultimately denied. The thirst to draw level, perhaps before the break, got the better of them as a moment of brilliance from Sornsai cushioned Thailand’s lead in the 32nd minute. The forward broke the offside trap before smoothly finishing past Palacios for the second time in the match. Halftime soon came with the score not entirely reflecting the complexion of the contest. In the second half, however, it was all Thailand as the Filipinas were outclassed by a team that made it to last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup. Five minutes after the break, Kanjana Sungngoen made it three for the cruising Thais, slotting the ball off the rebound. The rout was completed in the 70th minute, capping off a sour start to the competition. The Philippines will look to bounce back from the loss when they take on another powerhouse team Vietnam on Thursday. To be held at the same place, at the same kick off time of 3PM Myanmar time (4:30PM Philippine time), the match against the Vietnamese is a must win game for the Filipinas in order to keep their hopes of advancing to the semifinals alive. tiebreakertimes.com/tbt/philippines-suffer-heavy-defeat-against-thailand-in-aff-womens-championship-curtain-raiser/62112
