WOMEN: Thais fight back to beat Philippines CHONBURI (21 August 2019) – In the top of the table clash, hosts Thailand came back twice to beat the Philippines 4-2 in an exhilarating encounter of Group A of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 here at the Institute of Physical Education. In the decisive game of the group to ultimately decide the group winner, Thailand’s victory on the day ensured that they are in the driver’s seat with the full nine points from three matches played, going into the final game of the group in two days. “We were careless when we lost the ball and that led to us conceding the two goals. It was a very close game and it was not easy to create chances against a team at the same level as us,” said Thailand head coach Naruphon Kaenson after the game. The Thais, featuring a handful of players that had played at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, were the first off the block as they pushed the Philippines on defensive mode. But it was to be the Philippines who made the scoresheet first in the 11thminute when Quinley Quizada picked up the through ball from Sara Castaneda to slot the ball beyond the reach of Thai custodian Sutthiboon Salita. The Thai girls did not have to wait too long for the equalizer when the unmarked Chalyarak Jaruwan scored from close as the Philippines defence failed to make the clearance. The game went into higher gear as Thailand once again took control of the pace and rhythm of the game to press the Philippines back, well into the second half. But after surviving the onslaught for long periods, a quick counter in the 66thminute saw the Philippines going in front instead when Quinley capitalized on a Thai defensive lapse to score. The hardworking Nildhamrong Suchawadee was all over the place as she switches from one flank to another and in she provided the cross in the 74thminute for Thailand’s second goal for Thongsombut Rattikan to finish from close range. The Philippines’ backline became under increasing pressure after that and just a minute later, Thailand went ahead for the first time in the game with Intamee Silawan making good on the cross from Thongsombut. And right at the end, a failed clearance from the Philippines back four saw the waiting Boothduang Wilaipom to finish from close. “I am really proud of the girls as we played hard today. It was a fantastic game against the hosts and the players should really be proud of what they have displayed,” said Philippines captain Patrice Impelido. www.aseanfootball.org/v3/women-thais-fight-back-to-beat-philippines/

24 August 2019 Singapore WNT 0-4 Philippines WNT The Philippine Women’s National Team clinched a berth to the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 knockout stages following a comprehensive 4-0 win over Singapore in the final Group A match last Friday, 23 August 2019 at Institute of Physical Education in Chonburi, Thailand. It is the first time that the Philippines has qualified in the knock-out stages of the competition. The team finished second in Group A behind Thailand with 9 points after four matches. Forward Alisha del Campo led the team with a hat-trick performance. Quinley Quezada also netted her fourth goal of the tournament to draw level with fellow top scorer Camille Rodriguez. Del Campo opened her account in the first minute of the match. A long ball from Sara Castañeda found the forward past the offside trap, and finished with ease. Quezada added the second a mere five minutes after the opener. A half-clearance from Singapore allowed Hazel Lustan to send the ball in for the forward to finish. The Philippines finished the first half with a three-goal lead. Del Campo headed in her second goal in the 45th minute after Dionesa Tolentin’s first time shot was denied by the goalkeeper. Del Campo completed her hat-trick and the rout in the 50th minute. The forward punished the Singapore defense with a well-timed run to snatch the ball away and in to the back of the net. “The Philippine Women’s National Team’s group stage performance has been an inspiring one,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “We congratulate the team for this achievement, but the job is not yet done. We wish the team all the best in the semi-finals.” The Philippines, which is managed by Jefferson Cheng and supported by Philippine Sports Commission and MVP Sports Foundation, will face Group B winners Vietnam in the semi-final on Sunday, 25 August 2019.” pff.org.ph/2019/08/24/singapore-wnt-0-4-philippines-wnt/

25 August 2019 Optimism high for Malditas in semis clash vs Vietnam By: Cedelf P. Tupas - Vietnam, a team that has stamped its class on the Philippines over the past decade, stands in the way of the Malditas’ bid of reaching the finals of the AFF Women’s Championships on Sunday in Chonburi, Thailand. But national women’s coach Let Dimzon insists confidence within the team is at an all-time high after the Filipinos advanced to the semifinals for the first time in tournament history following a 4-0 beating of Singapore last Friday. Dimzon believes the squad can pull off an upset, even if the unbeaten Vietnamese have won six times over the Philippines in the past decade. “If we control the direct play of Vietnam, we are in a good spot for the finals,” said Dimzon, who noted the improvement of her team which she started handling in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia. Except for the 2-4 loss to Thailand, the Malditas have been terrific in the tournament, besting Malaysia, Timor Leste and Singapore by scoring 14 goals. “I’m very happy and proud for the performance of the team from the first game down to the last game of the group stage,” said Dimzon. “Our players fought hard, they well manage the game and followed the plan, though there still more aspect to improve on. We need to strengthen both attacking and defending when we face Vietnam.” Dimzon pointed to the players’ familiarity with her and the system she has put in as one of the keys to their success in the tournament. sports.inquirer.net/362971/optimism-high-for-malditas-in-semis-clash-vs-vietnam?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1566681918

However they will be hosting the tournament so hopefully that helps with their performance. Both Indonesia and Malaysia backed out of the last SEA games because they didn't think their teams were competitive enough in their group. I wonder if they will do the same this time now that Australia has joined this even tougher group.

I am not sure yet but Australia might send their U20 team to prepare for the Fifa Womens World Cup U20 this coming August. They sometimes to do that for the AFF Women's Championships in the past.
However with the disappointment of not making the semis in the Asian Cup and with the coming World Cup next year, I won’t be surprised if they send their A team.

FEATURE: Cream of Australia’s young crop to take on South East Asia’s best in AFF Championships By Janakan Seemampillai Australia will head to the Philippines for the 11th AFF Women’s Championships from 4-17 July. This will be Australia’s sixth appearance at the tournament, which is run by the ASEAN Football Federation and is for South East Asian countries. Australia won the tournament in 2008, their maiden appearance, beating Vietnam 1-0 in the final care of an own goal by Dao Thi Mien. This was the one and only time Australia took a senior Matilda’s team to the tournament. In 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018, Australia took predominantly youth players to the AFF Championships. Mel Andreatta, the appointed coach, has taken a similar approach this year with the 35 player preliminary squad very much having a youth flavour. The squad is made up of a large number of Young Matilda players, as well as some older players including Jada Whyman, Chelsea Blissett, Larissa Crummer and Princess Ibini to name a few. Football Australia confirmed the 2022 team, as with the 2013 to 2018 teams, will not be capped as playing A internationals.Australia will take on hosts Philippines, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in the group phase. The top two teams from the two groups progress to the semi finals. The tournament will serve as a fantastic opportunity for the U-20 players in the squad to prepare for the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica in August. Assisting Andreatta will be Young Matildas’ coach Leah Blayney. Andreatta, who is Tony Gustavsson’s assistant for the senior Matildas, was excited about participating in 2022, sighting the event as a chance for the best young players in Australia to perform on an international stage. “We have some exciting promising talent across our player pool and since the resumption of international football in 2022, we have been working extremely hard to ensure that they are given every opportunity to grow and develop as players that will represent Australia prominently over the coming years,” Andreatta said. “The AFF Women’s Championships is a tournament with great history that will provide the next generation of player Australian footballers with strong learnings as they embark on their next phase of personal and professional development. More competitive match minutes at the highest available intensity will only be beneficial for the national team in the long term. “Playing in match conditions allows us to work with the group closely and continue integrating them into the style of play that will give them the best foundations to challenge for a position on the roster for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.” The squad is as follows: www.footballaustralia.com.au/.../australia-names... Meanwhile, the Young Matildas take on New Zealand in Auckland on Sunday at 2pm AEST. A number of these youngsters will be looking to impress to book a ticket to the Philippines, which will be a gateway to Costa Rica. As mentioned above the AFF Championship tournament is not cap locking which will allow Fil Australian Amy Sayer from Stanford U, who is participating an opportunity to switch sides and play for the Philippines in the future if she wishes.
