We are counting down 30 days to 3 years since the "Miracle of Hanoi" in 2010. So we are doing a Head Count game called "Countdown #NationalAzkalsDay". We'd like everyone (note: everyone in this forum) to participate and share their thoughts in one sentence about this special day. They must indicate the days remaining before December 5. This head count will run until December 5, 2013. Here's mine: 30 Days to Go
I would never forget being curious about these players when they were in the front page of the Inquirer the next day. It started my curiosity about football and the national team.
And yeah... who can forget the LA Galaxy match 1 year later?

really started my curiosity with the azkals was the playstation story. pff travelled europe to search for a pinoy player for the national team and "surprisingly" found none, then a kid at home in pinas playing football manager on playstation saw the chelsea team and search the players profiles and saw siblings phil and james on the reserve team are half pinoys and called the attention of the pff.

I was online, right here in Usapangfootball.com, watching the Suzuki Cup 2010 game against Singapore live in a nearby TV. I wanted to chat with fellow fans but it seemed like I was the only one online. Prior to that I watched them in the tournament in 2007 where they were losing 4-0 to Thailand and Malaysia. They then made positive steps in the Challenge Cup qualifiers in 2008 but were eliminated due to goal difference. That was Neil Etheridge's debut where he kept a clean sheet. 2010 was Neil's AFF (Suzuki) Cup debut and I was excited because I felt we had the best keeper in the tournament and none of the other teams knew it. Singapore scored, but the boys were playing defense well enough to keep it 1-0. I would have been sooo happy with that already. I was already smiling as the clock ticked away. Then Chris Greatwich made that physics-defying header, twisting his body and craning his neck to score an equalizer. I jumped from my seat! I threw pillows to the ground after screaming in them! I typed my update here in UF that we were about to draw against Singapore, fingers and hands shaking so hard that I could barely type! I was elated! Told everyone at work that we drew against Singapore. Of course, no one got it. "That's nice", they would say. Against Vietnam, the defending champions, I was again expecting a tough time for our boys. But Neil was a beast. He would fend off strike after strike from Vietnam as they carved past our double decker bus. We went up 1-0 on a counterattack and scored again for 2-0 in the second half! My jaw fell to the floor! We were about to beat the defending champs!!! Again my hands shook so hard I could barely type my updates here in UF! Then with all the drama and sour grapes from the Vietnam coach, bwahahaha!!! In what seemed like an instant the "Azkals" became a household name. It felt great. After following the team through many heartbreaking years the "Miracle of Hanoi" made it all worthwhile. Everyone on that team are heroes to me. Check out the post-Vietnam-win videos from Rick Olivares' blog. Pure awesome. bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2010/12/post-victory-win-over-vietnam-2010.html?m=1
