Ptr. Bravo named as new Floorball Phils. prexy Christian Team Ministries’ Pastor Renato Bravo was recently named as the new Floorball Philippines president. This, after former head Ryan Elizaga of the University of the Philippines left for China. Bravo has served as the association’s Vice President and Visayas coordinator before his eventual promotion. Among other achievements of Bravo include the introduction of triathlon to Bacolod City in the late 1990s. He also served as sports moderator of Trinity Christian School and a consultant of the youth and sports of Escalante City. Meanwhile, according to Bravo, who is one of the pioneers of floorball in the country, he will be taking the responsibility of promoting the sports and push it to be a national sports association in the Philippines. In the 2015 South East Asian Games in Singapore, floorball will be one of the medal sports. To further strengthen this sport event in the country, Bravo, along with some teams of trainers representing the Philippines, flew to Singapore to experience the World University Floorball Championships – the first World Cup for this event held outside Europe. At present, the national team, mostly from West Negros University, are preparing for the upcoming Malaysian 3V3 Floorball Challenge in Penang, Malaysia. “In December, we are also looking forward to see action in the Association of South East Asian Floorball Championships,” Bravo said. “Moreover, we also pray that the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission will grant us accreditation to represent the Philippines in next year’s SEA Games,” he added. In November last year, Ptr. Bravo spearheaded the 1st Western Visayas Floorball Seminar Workshop to introduce the sports to the public. PH comeback too late against Estonia in Floorball Worlds debut The Philippines broke loose in the final period, but the comeback proved too late as Estonia took the win, 13-6, in the pool phase of the 2021 Men’s World Floorball Championships, Saturday at the Helsinki Ice Hall 2. Both teams came into the tournament as replacement teams for Australia and Japan, but the difference in the world rankings became evident in the match. The Estonians are the world no. 10, while the Filipinos are at number 35 — the lowest-ranked team in the competition. Nonetheless, the Nationals stood their ground and showed what they are made of especially in that third period where they scored most of their goals. The Philippines just needed one breakthrough goal to show that heart and shake off the debut jitters. After surrendering two quick goals against Estonia in 15 seconds in the 35th minute, the Filipinos finally broke into the defense and got their first-ever World goal. And it was Fredrik Jeppsson who had the honor for the milestone goal. The forward who is making his international debut for the country turned in a good pass from fellow debutant Melvin Alm to cut the deficit to nine, 1-10, with three minutes left in the second period. Not to be outdone, veterans Christian Shoultze and Ryan Hallden, converted a nice interception at the centerline for the Philippines’ second goal. Shoultze found Hallden lurking in the right flank, and the latter blasted the ball past the Estonian goalkeeper Daniel Vaigur. Alm could have gotten one for his own in the power play early in the third period, but Vaigur stopped his two shots to eventually complete the penalty kill. Nonetheless, the Filipinos would not be denied in the following power play as Jeppsson this time found Simon Andersson just near the crease for the third goal. Three more goals came from Jeppsson, Shoultze, and Andersson suddenly found the Philippines just four goals away from the more favored Estonians, 6-10. That woke up the European side and closed out the match with three straight goals to put their opponents at bay, and eventually pocket the expected win. Earlier, the Philippines stood their ground in the first period after surrendering two quick goals in the first four minutes of the match. Patrik Kareliusson opened the scoring for the Europeans at the 2:34 mark, before Mathias Einamann added one almost two minutes after. Tanel Kasenurm then helped Estonia mount a 10-0 lead with four goals spanning the two periods, while Kareliusson drew two more goals in the second frame. This before the championship debutants roared back. The Philippines will try to bounce back on Sunday against a more familiar foe in Singapore. The two Southeast Asian sides lock arms at 12 p.m. as well (6 p.m., Philippine time) on the same rink. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/ph-comeback-too-late-against-estonia-in-floorball-worlds-debut/226737

Philippines rolls past Singapore, notches first-ever Floorball Worlds win Debuting national team forward Kim Varga fueled the Philippines to its first-ever win in the 2021 Men’s World Floorball Championships, 9-4, against regional rivals Singapore Sunday at the Helsinki Ice Hall 2. This is likewise the first time the Nationals took a victory against the Southeast Asian powerhouse, and what grander stage to do it than the World Championships. With the win, the Philippines has a chance to move into the knockout rounds with a follow-up victory against Canada on Monday. The IBF Falun Utveckling mainstay scattered five points throughout the match to pace the national squad’s attack, ending the match with a smart shot into the empty net to put away the win for good. Varga along with Melvin Alm flexed the squad’s prolific start line as they combined with two goals in the first period, with the latter breaking Jared Tan’s guard repeatedly. The tandem opened the scoring for the Philippines at the 4:07 mark of the first canto, and close the same period for a 5-0 lead with 43 seconds left. The second line would not be outdone as veterans Ryan Hallden and captain Lucas Oijvall found the back of the net. The latter doubled the lead for the Philippines just 26 seconds after the Alm breakthrough, while the former made it 4-0 to break a long scoring drought for the Nationals. Singapore finally broke the ice when Hafiz Subir caught the erstwhile steadfast Patrik Nessbo by surprise, eight minutes into the second period. Nonetheless, another goal from Alm restored the five-point lead for the Philippines heading into the final frame. The 2015 Southeast Asian Games champions then roared back and cut the deficit to three, 4-7, after captain R Suria sank a long shot off a power-play opportunity. However, with time on their side, the Philippines just held on to the ball well and denied any chance for the Singaporeans on the goal. Instead, they put the finishing touches the way they started it with Alm and Varga doing their job on the attack. That all-important match against Canada is scheduled on Monday at 1:00 pm (7:00 p.m., Philippine time) at the main rink of the Helsinki Ice Hall. A win will propel them to a playoff for a quarterfinal berth. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/philippines-rolls-past-singapore-notches-first-ever-floorball-worlds-win/226848

Philippine gallant stand not enough against Canada in Floorball Worlds The Philippines could not capitalize on a strong start and a gallant fight back, absorbing an 8-13 defeat against Canada at the close of the 2020 Men’s World Floorball Championships pool phase, Monday at the Helsinki Ice Hall. A win could have sent the country to its debut into the World Games men’s floorball tournament, but instead, the result sees the Philippines into the 13th-16th bracket and will take on the fourth-place finisher from Group C — either Poland, the United States, or Thailand. The Nationals had a dream start as they raced to an early 2-0 lead after Melvin Alm converted on a penalty shot and Ryan Hallden directed an intercepted ball into the back of the net. The Canadians then retaliated and captured the lead for the first time with three goals in seven minutes — the first two of which came in a similar fashion from that of the Filipinos. Cameron Buck then got the go-ahead goal off a defensive lapse by the Philippines. With momentum on their side, the Canadians extended the lead to four at 7-3 at the onset of the second period with a Valterri Viitakoski conversion. Nonetheless, the debuting Philippine side would fight back and turn in three goals, two coming from power plays with Fredrik Jeppsson on the finishing end to get back to within one, 6-7. Sensing some urgency, the Canadians took it up a notch, taking on a depleted Philippine lineup at bay to restore four-point leads at 10-6 and finally 11-7 to put the latter at bay. For good measure, Viitakoski sealed the win for good for the North Americans with a shot from way out past Kristoffer Jandelius for the biggest lead of the match at 12-7, and another at 13-8 at an empty Philippine net to negate a conversion from Christian Schoultze. The Philippines will try to bounce back on the next match scheduled on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m.) at the Helsinki Hall 2. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/philippine-gallant-stand-not-enough-against-canada-in-floorball-worlds/226951

Philippines blows USA late, advances to Floorball Worlds battle for 13th The Philippines started strong and finished better, subduing the United States, 10-5, to take their second win of the 2020 Men’s World Floorball Championships, Tuesday at the Helsinki Ice Hall 2. With the win the Championships debutants go into their final match with a chance to take the first-ever ticket of the country to the World Games in Birmingham next year, when they face either Thailand or Singapore on Wednesday. The country went on to an early tear after scoring four goals in the first five minutes of the match. Lucas Werelius made his first start of the tournament worth it with two goals coming from Melvin Alm Mendoza deliveries three minutes in. The Värmdö IF forward then saw two-time Match Best Player Kim Varga for the third, before Fredrik Jeppsson pushed it to a 4-0 lead. Nonetheless, the Americans fought their way back with three unanswered goals to end the first period to cut the deficit to one, 3-4. The last two of which came off two power plays as Simon Andersson and Lucas Öijvall were sent to the box. Defense picked up in the second period with both teams scrambled for goal. However, the Philippines still found some holes in the opponent’s line as they pushed the lead to 6-4, thanks to a wonderful penalty hit from Alm and rocket of a long shot from Magnus Andersson. Then all of a sudden, the floodgates opened for the Nationals in the final and dealt with the Americans for good. After scoring four unanswered goals in the first, the Philippines replicated the feat in the third with Fredrik Dahlmen starting it off with a goal fresh from his penalty box. Alm added two more, before Varga puts the nail on the coffin with a goal of his own. The US squad took one back with William Eriksson taking his second, but the match just needed its final whistle as the Philippines was headed for the second win. The playoff for 13th place is scheduled on Wednesday at 5 p.m. (11 p.m., Philippine time) on the same rink. The Nationals will take on the winner of the Southeast Asian clash between Thailand and Singapore tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/philippines-blows-usa-late-advances-to-floorball-worlds-battle-for-13th/227050

Philippines absorbs shootout loss to THA, ends Floorball Worlds in 14th After leading late in regulation, the Philippines could not avert a Thailand comeback, suffering an 8-9 loss in a shootout in their final match of the 2020 Men’s World Floorball Championship, Wednesday at the Helsinki Ice Hall 2. A win could have sent the Philippines to a possible ticket to next year’s World Games in Birmingham, USA, so instead, it is the reigning Southeast Asian Games champions who grabbed that opportunity. Nonetheless, it is still a debut to remember for the Nationals. The tournament first-times were minutes away from ending the competition on a high note, but the Thais have been at this stage and would want some extra drama. Their captain Pawat Thaudit found an opening and shot past Philippine goalie Patrik Nessbo to level the match at 7 before he sent Jeerayut Yaemyim the ball for the go-ahead goal at 8-7 with less than five minutes left in the clock. Ryan Hallden, who has not played against USA, then prolonged his career with the national team for at least 10 minutes, when he turned in a Kim Varga pass and sent the match into sudden death. With both teams turning their defense up, the contest eventually went into the shootout. There Alexander Rinefalk provided the marginal goal to send the Thais to the win. Chusak Narkpraset provided the lead for the Thais with a beautiful shot past Kristoffer Jandelius, before Rinefalk doubled the advantage with his own conversion. Philippine debutants Melvin Alm and Kim Varga then crumbled against Auttuchai Sohtree as the veteran keeper sent the Philippines to the brink. However, Fredrik Dahlmen brought the Nationals back to life with a collective effort for the goal. Jandelius turned it up a notch at the net after that Dahlmen goal and denied back-to-back chances from Thailand. Nonetheless, Hallden could not duplicate his regulation time heroics and missed on his turn against Sohtree, as Thailand consequently snagged the win. The Philippines had to climb back themselves after going down at 3-0 at the onset of the battle, but thanks to two goals from the combination of Alm and Alexander Springfeldt, the Nationals came within one. Two goals then came in the second period despite some tough defense as Rhodell Esguerra and Simon Andersson found the equalizer and the go-ahead goals, respectively. Thailand, however, drew back with a Santipong Sukkasem goal. Varga then came to life in the third period to take the Philippines at the advantage with his three goals of the contest, before Thailand countered with Thaidit at the helm to eventually rewrite the story of the battle. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/philippines-absorbs-shootout-loss-to-tha-ends-floorball-worlds-in-14th/227168
