www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/12/05/10/azkals-humble-defending-champ-vietnam-suzuki-cupMANILA, Philippines – Deadly finishing and no-nonsense defending saw the Philippine national football team humble reigning champion Vietnam, 2-0, in their ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup clash at the My Dinh National Stadium Sunday night. The tournament’s biggest upset unfolded before the eyes of 40,000 Vietnamese fans when Chris Greatwich scored the opening goal for the Azkals in the 38th minute. The hosts tried to mount a comeback but the Philippines’ back 4, midfield, and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge fended off waves of attacks from the Vietnamese. Yellow cards and 2-footed tackles ensued as the Vietnamese, who defeated Myanmar 7-1 in their last outing, were left frustrated by the Filipinos’ disciplined defense. The Azkals were content to stay on defense while launching counterattacks at every opportunity, a strategy previously laid out by their coach, Simon McMenemy. Phil Younghusband sealed the Azkals’ win with a precision strike at close range with 10 minutes remaining. The victory resulted in the Philippines topping Group B. The Philippines earlier drew with Singapore, 1-1. The Azkals will face Myanmar next on Wednesday while Vietnam and Singapore square off in a knockout encounter.

Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 22:59:00 12/05/2010 Filed Under: Football, Sports Events HANOI—The Philippines pulled off the most stunning win in the history of the AFF Suzuki Cup with a 2-0 blanking of defending champion Vietnam Sunday night before a boisterous crowd of close to 40,000 at the My Ding Stadium here. Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband scored a goal each as the Filipinos, who needed to go through the qualifying stage to advance to the tournament, claimed top spot in Group B. Chris Greatwich’s angled header off an Anton del Rosario gave the Filipinos a shock lead in the 37th minute, before Phil Younghusband doubled the advantage with a well-taken goal from 10 yards in the 79th minute. It was the biggest result for the Philippines, which was widely considered as the weakest team here. But the Filipinos held Singapore to a shocking 1-1 draw on Greatwich’s injury-time equalizer in their opening match. The Filipinos bravely battled on the defensive end against the fleet-footed Vietnamese with Aly Borromeo, Rob Gier, Anton del Rosario and Ray Jonnson. Neil Etheridge also made crucial saves for the Filipinos, who only need to draw with Myanmar to make the semifinals.

soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=849441&sec=global&cc=3436Philippines pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the history of the AFF Suzuki Cup with a 2-0 win over defending champions Vietnam. Goals from Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband overcame the hosts at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi and leaves Philippines in the unlikely position of topping Group B and needing just a point against Myanmar to qualify for the semi-finals. Greatwich opened the scoring after 38 minutes with a diving header from Anton Del Rosario's cross before Younghusband sealed the points 11 minutes from the end when he cut inside and fired a low shot into the back of the net. Vietnam now need to beat Singapore in their final game to guarantee their place in the last four, while the Lions just need a point. Earlier, an injury-time strike from substitute Agu Casmir saw Singapore come from a goal down to avoid an upset with a 2-1 win over Myanmar. Myanmar had taken a shock lead after just 13 minutes when Khin Muang Lwin finished off an incisive move and managed to hold out until the interval. The second-half introduction of Casmir proved crucial, however, as the forward cut the ball back to Aleksander Duric from the byline just after the hour mark and the veteran striker sidefooted into an empty net from inside the six-yard box. Duric then returned the favour deep into stoppage time as his lay-off was driven into the back of the net by Casmir.

www.affsuzukicup.com/CustomContentRetrieve.aspx?ID=735734Hanoi: The Philippines recorded the biggest upset in the history of the AFF Suzuki Cup on Sunday evening as Simon McMenemy's side handed defending champions Vietnam a 2-0 defeat in their Group B encounter at My Dinh Stadium. Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband scored a goal in each half to give the unfancied Filipinos the greatest result in the country's recent history and leave them on the verge of qualifying for the semifinals for the first time. The win follows fast on the heels of a 1-1 draw with Singapore in their opening game and moves the Philippines to the top of the standings with one round of matches remaining. After a tame start it was the Philippines who went closest to opening the scoring when, the 18th minute, the Vietnamese defence failed to clear Phil Younghusband's corner and the ball fell at the feet of Ian Araneta, but his shot was only good enough to clip the outside of the post. That scare woke the home side out of their early slumbers but, fortunately for the Filipinos, goalkeeper Neil Etheridge was on hand to keep out Pham Thanh Luong's effort a minute later. An elementary error by the Fulham goalkeeper, however, almost resulted in disaster for the Philippines moments later when Etheridge handled the ball outside his penalty area and, from the resulting free kick, Nguyen Minh Phuong curled a free kick around the defensive wall that went just wide of goal. With seven minutes remaining in the half, the Philippines stunned the Vietnamese when Anton del Rosario crossed for Greatwich to claim his second goal of the tournament, a diving header that was somehow miss-read by Duong Hong Son. Vietnam could find no way through the well-drilled Philippine defence throughout the rest of the half and, as the second period began, Henrique Calisto's team became increasingly desperate. Nguyen Vu Phuong shot just wide from the edge of the area in the 56th minute while Rob Gier deflected Nguyen Anh Duc's effort wide four minutes later. Substitute Nguyen Trong Hoang, meanwhile, forced a fine save from the imposing Etheridge just two minutes after his introduction. But, with 11 minutes remaining, the Philippines managed to put the result beyond doubt when, with Vietnam committing men forward, Phil Younghusband led a break that resulted in the former Chelsea trainee stepping inside the home defence and curling a low shot beyond Hong Son. The goal silenced the 40,000 capacity crowd at My Dinh and, as supporters poured out of the stands and into the streets Pham Thanh Luong hit the woodwork as Vietnam's desperation continued right until the final whistle.
