Watching the highlights, that was pretty fun to watch. Attacking football and passes were strung together from both teams. This U23 team is a far cry from eight, maybe even as recent as five years ago. While I was hoping that the U23 team would've progressed much more to the point that they would be looking back at Timor Leste, the trajectory is not bad. Most of the players are based in the RP, and since they're still very young at U23, I suspect many had their formative years of playing in the RP. This is very good. The only way for the senior Azkals to take it to the next level in the long run is if there's an infusion of local based talent. The only way.

I agree. The local U23 players have improved a lot thru the years and impressed me despite the current Covid lockdown that prevented league play at pro and college level.
I don't mind local players making up most of the youth teams except for the U23 Asian and SEA Games as this gives them the chance to develop their game.

They still have a chance to get to the semis. If Cambodia defeats Timor Leste and they have a better GD against Brunei they are in.

FT Philippines 2-1 Brunei
Since Timor Leste defeated Cambodia 1-0, they topped the group relegating the Philippine U23 to 3rd place in Grp A and preventing them from advancing to the semis.

Meanwhile, the PFF also revealed that Hall’s assistant Norman Fegidero will make a comeback as the national men’s football team head coach for the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Hanoi, Vietnam in May. The 52-year-old former national team player last held the coaching post in 2008, where he guided the Filipinos to a runner-up finish in that year’s Challenge Cup. “Norman already knows the squad. He’s familiar with the players and the players are familiar with him. That’s a good start,” Hall gave his thoughts on Fegidero’s appointment. As a player, Fegidero rose to prominence when he scored the lone goal in the Philippines’ upset 1-0 win against Malaysia during the 1991 SEAG held at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. In preparation for their SEAG campaign, Fegidero is expected to handle the Azkals Development Team in the Copa Paulino Alcantara 2022 starting March 14. www.cnnphilippines.com/sports/2022/3/11/PFF-appoints-Hall-Fegidero.html

Azkals U23 hope to have Maranon, Hartmann as reinforcements for SEAG
Bienvenido Maranon’s desire to represent the Philippines anew just got a boost.
Officials from the Philippine Football Federation disclosed his potential participation in the 31st Southeast Asian Games this May in Hanoi, Vietnam, Friday afternoon.
As the SEA Games is still an under-23 tournament for the men’s division, each team is allowed two overaged players.
If things fall into place, newly-appointed mentor Norman Fegidero will be able to call on the likes of Johor Darul Ta’zim’s Bienvenido Maranon and United City’s Mark Hartmann.
“We are looking at the striker position as the hole to fill with this squad and hopefully we will be talking to our senior players in Singapore as to who could be available,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami.
“We’re looking at Bienve Maranon, for example, who wants to play for the Philippines. This will be his chance to have a go at it at a major tournament again. We’re looking at several players. Maybe even Mark Hartmann as a striker as well. These are the options.
“Our back four is now solid. Our midfielders, we have good and experienced players there already. The strikers’ position, that’s where we feel we need to augment our manpower so that’s where we will focus on,” the sports patron continued.
Maranon, who top-scored for the Azkals in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 with four goals, three of which came against Myanmar, would be a key addition to the U-23 team’s forward line in the upcoming SEA Games 2022 in Vietnam.
However, with the tournament taking place from May 6-22, 2022, he will be forced to miss JDT’s matches against PJ City (May 6), Negeri Sembilan (May 11), Pahang (May 18), and Kedah FA (May 21) if his mother team releases him for the competition.
The SEA Games is not part of the FIFA calendar.
If Maranon’s enlistment pushes through, then he will be one of the leaders of the upcoming SEA Games team, which will mostly consist of players from the Azkals Development Team that will also be helmed by Fegidero.
The upcoming Copa Paulino Alcantara 2022 campaign is part of the squad’s preparation for the upcoming regional tournament and it is safe to say that this lineup of young stars has to hit the ground running.
“Right now, if you could see the configuration of the lineup for ADT, it is composed of players who are all eligible to be part of the national team squad for this Southeast Asian Games – meaning they were born 1999 and up,” confirmed Palami. “Some of them have played in the under-23s as well and there’s about five or six who can still qualify for the under-19 championships later in the year.
“It’s gonna be an exciting squad and the intention has always been for the ADT now to form the core of the team for the Southeast Asian Games.”

Philippines U23 4-0 Timor-Leste U23 The Philippine Under-23 Men’s National Team opened their SEA Games campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Timor-Leste, Friday 06 May 2022 at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, Vietnam. Christian Rontini, Dennis Chung, Jovin Bedic, and Oskari Kekkonen were all on target for Norman Fegidero’s side, which collected their first three points in Group A. The Philippines started strong and never looked back from the get go, forcing Timor-Leste on their own half for most of the match. Rontini opened the scoring in the 11th minute with free header inside the box from a Stephan Schrock cross from the left flank. Bedic came close to doubling the advantage near the half-hour mark. The forward managed to beat the offside trap, but could only send his shot wide of the post. Chung eventually slotted in the second goal in the 56th minute. Schrock was again involved in the passage of play with an inviting ball for the midfielder to chip it in over the goalkeeper. Bedic made it 3-0 in the 78th minute. The forward was once again in a one-on-one situation, and was able to convert his chance inside the box. Kekkonen wrapped the rout with thunderous effort in the 81st minute after he was set up by Oliver Bias. The Philippines will face defending SEA Games winners Vietnam on Sunday 08 May 2022 at the same venue. pff.org.ph/2022/05/06/philippines-u23-4-0-timor-leste-u23/

Philippines Under-23 squad for the 31st Southeast Asian Games Thursday, May 5, 2022
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announces the Philippines Under-23 Men’s National Team that will compete in the 31st Southeast Asian Games Men’s Under-23 Football Competition to be held from 06-22 May 2022 in Vietnam.
The Philippines were drawn in Group A together with hosts Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste. The group stage matches will be played at the Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, Vietnam.
Twenty (20) players were selected to form the squad with two (2) overaged players in midfielder Stephan Schrock, who will be competing in his second straight SEA Games, and forward Jovin Bedic.
Former national team player Norman Fegidero, who was part of the 1991 SEA Games team that qualified to the knockout stages, is the head coach of the Under-23 squad. He is assisted by John Paul Merida, Oliver Colina, and goalkeeping coach Noel Marcaida.
In preparation for the SEA Games, the team initially competed in the AFF U23 Championship 2022 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia last February where they finished third in their group. It was followed by a stint in the Copa Paulino Alcantara as the Azkals Development Team, which collected two wins in the competition.
The team finalized its preparations with a training camp in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where they drew Petaling Jaya FC, 1-1, last 29 April 2022 and lost to Malaysia U23, 0-2, last 01 May 2022.
The team is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.

The Philippine men's U23 team got off to a good start in their first 2 games in the SEA Games group stage recording a 4-0 win against Timor Leste followed up by a 0-0 draw against tournament favorites and SEAG defending champion Vietnam.
They remain on top of group A with 4 points with a +1 better GD than Vietnam which is in second place also with 4 points.
Only the top 2 countries in Grp A will qualify to the semis so the Phil U23 is in a good spot right now to accomplish that goal if they can get positive results in their remaining matches against Myanmar and Indonesia.
