In the same press conference as the Dooley announcement, the PFF announced that they also hired Jim Fraser for the U21 team with the aim to compete in the 2017 SEA games. PFF appoints another World Cupper as U20/U21 Head Coach The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has recently appointed former Australian World Cup player and Hall of Famer James “Jim” Fraser as the head coach of the U20/U21 Men’s National Team, which is set to compete in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy that may be held in Brunei Darussalam in August 2014. Also appointed were Coach Marlon Maro as Technical Adviser, former Azkals player Leigh Gunn as Assistant Coach, Marlon Pinero as Assistant Coach and Noel Marcaida as Goalkeeper Coach. “We welcome Coach Jim Fraser in the Philippines and we look forward to his contributions to our junior national team. Given the need for our younger teams to be more competitive, we tap the services of experts from developed footballing countries to help us inspect and scout players properly,” said PFF President Mariano Araneta. The new coaching staff has been conducting inspection and tryouts of players for the national pool. Thus far, sessions for players from Luzon are being held at the University of Makati football field, Emperodor Stadium and Turf BGC for the Month of February. Inspection and tryouts for Visayas and Mindanao players have yet to be scheduled. The PFF has also instructed all AFC Financial Aid Program (AFAP) Coaches nationwide to make recommendations for promising players that can be inspected. “We need to find the best players from all over the country and we call on our AFAP coaches to help scout for talents. With Coach Jim’s expertise, we are optimistic that we will be able to field a competitive line-up,” said PFF General Secretary Edwin Gastanes. Coach Jim Fraser has a UEFA A License in Coaching and is the Director of Coaching at the Sabre United Sports Group and International Goalkeepers of Sydney, Australia. He played for the Australian National Men’s Team in the 1970 and 1974 World Cup. If I remember right, the U-19 team they fielded in Australia last year under the same management of Jeffrey Cheng and coach(now assistant coach) Marlon Maro, did well in a tournament over there, winning the Kanga Cup competing as the Carranz football club. There seems to be a trend for the PFF to appoint national team coaches with excellent teaching credentials as both Dooley and Fraser have their own academies in their respective countries(US and Australia) and have outstanding reputations as teacher of the sport and I think this will benefit the local and younger players.

A Chinese Filipino businessman who is reportedly part of a group taking over a professional club in Australia has been appointed manager of the Philippine national Under-21 men’s football team. Jefferson Cheng, who has also supported the Under-16 and Under-19 national teams in the past, will back the Under-21 Azkals targeting to compete in the Southeast Asian Games in 2017. In one of his first moves, Cheng brought in Jim Fraser, a former Australian goalkeeper who helped the Socceroos to their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 1974, as the coach of the U-21 Azkals. “I was asked to come over and (contribute my coaching to the football) development here,” Fraser told InterAksyon.com. Cheng is part of the management board of the International Goalkeepers Academy, a school for young keepers in Australia run by Fraser. Fraser, a member of the football Hall of Fame in Australia, said that he will stay in the Philippines this month to identify possible players for the Under-21 Azkals. Eligible members are likely to come from different universities and colleges in the country. “We need a trial. I’m not sure yet how competitive that would be. I haven’t seen the players but we’ll take a good look at them for the next three weeks, let’s see,” he said. Enrique is the youngest member of the team at 16 y/o but is apparently already fielding offers from UFL clubs, including Loyola. “This is like a dream,’’ Monserrat said. “I want to play club football in Asia, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea. “I want to keep on working with this team and I want to keep on working as hard as I can because my goal is to play for the Philippines national first team. “I’m 16 and I’m playing with the under 22s and that’s really special.”

AFC U23 Championship 2016 Qualifiers Draw Philippines in Grp G with DPR Korea, Thailand and Cambodia  Qatar, the hosts of the AFC U-23 Championship 2016 Finals, will not participate in the qualifying competition which is divided into two zones – The West Zone for participating nations from the West and South Central regions, and the East Zone for East Asian and ASEAN nations. There will be three groups of five teams and two groups of four teams in the West Zone (total five groups, 23 teams) while the East Zone will have five groups of four teams (total five groups, 20 teams). Ten group winners and five best-second placed teams from all groups will qualify for the final competition (total 15 qualifying teams). Iran, Bangladesh and Pakistan will be the hosts for the West Zone while the East Zone qualifying competition will take place in China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Chinese Taipei. These hosting nations will be drawn into separate groups.
