This is a lucky draw for the Philippines. Very lucky. Past performance of the U23 hasn't shown much to cheer about so perhaps this time? Beat Cambodia, and then find a way to get past N. Korea.

Actually I thought we were very unlucky. North Korea won the silver medal in the 2014 Asian Games(U-23) and Thailand(made up largely of the same players participating in the Suzuki Cup) made the semifinal of the Asian Games as well finishing fourth. Many of the same players, will be age eligible for next year's AFC U-23 qualifying games.

While I didn't realize how well N Korea did this year, I'd still take this group over the others, except perhaps the one with Australia. This is not the toughest group, nor the easiest, and the point remains -- nothing indicative about our U23 regarding success in the near future.

Junior and Senior Azkals Face Busy Year Aheadwww.businessmirror.com.ph/footballers-face-busy-year-ahead/by Diego de la Paz - January 19, 2015 THE country’s under-23 men’s national football squad will compete in two high-profile tournaments to supplement the emerging program’s active campaign in 2015.With the recent success of the Azkals in gaining final round entries in three major tournaments last year, the program headed by Team Manager Dan Palami is aiming to duplicate the success of the senior nationals. On tap for the U-23 nationals this year are the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship qualifiers in March and the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore in June.Clustered in a four-team Group G that includes North Korea, Cambodia and group host Thailand, the under-23 players will vie for one of the 15 spots in the 2016 AFC U-23 championship in Qatar from March 27 to 31. The Junior Azkals face North Korea in Bangkok on March 27, followed by the match against Thailand on March 29. They wind up the campaign versus Cambodia on March 31.Up for grabs for the top three winners in the main tournament next year are spots in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.Among the Azkals called up during the last Suzuki Cup that are eligible for both the AFC U-23 qualifiers and the SEA Games are Mark Hartmann, Dennis Villanueva, Manny Ott, Curt Dizon, Daisuke Sato, Kenshiro Daniels and Amani Aguinaldo. The seniors’ side, on the other hand, will have its hands full for the expanded 2018 International Football Federation World Cup Asian qualifiers starting in March.

Philippine Azkals Build Up for International Campaignswww.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/12/16/14/ph-azkals-build-intl-campaignsMANILA, Philippines - While the Philippine Azkals look ahead to vying in next year's Fifa World Cup qualifiers, the nation's under-23 squad will also embark on their own tough mission aimed at the Rio Olympics. The U-23 Azkals will compete in the qualifiers for the AFC U-23 Championship 2016, the designated qualifying meet in Asia for the Olympiad in Rio.They will have their hands full in the group qualifiers slated March 2015, though, as they found themselves bracketed in Group G along with North Korea, Southeast Asian power Thailand, and Cambodia after last week’s official draw. The winners of the 10 groups, as well as the five best second-placers and host Qatar will advance to the tournament proper in January 2016. The top three teams in the main event of the AFC U-23 tilt will move on to the 2016 Olympiad.

I guess the PFF is not seriously taking the 2 upcoming international events this year for the U-23 squad, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that should be prepared for well in advance ...
