Etheridge and Azkals set sights on 2019 AFC Asian Cup / May 13 2016 / Manila: Neil Etheridge sees no reason why he and his Philippines team-mates should not be targeting qualification for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. The Azkals, who have never qualified for Asia’s premier international tournament, are currently one step away from booking their trip to United Arab Emirates after advancing to the third and final round of qualifying. They achieved this after a third-placed finish, behind Uzbekistan and DPR Korea, in Group H in the second round of qualification, and are now waiting to find out who their next opponents will be. A place amongst Asia’s elite used to be little more than a dream for Philippines but, with the team now at all-time high world ranking of 115th, Etheridge has called on them to believe they have what it takes to qualify for the Asian Cup. “The Asian Cup is the major priority and a realistic stepping stone for us,” he said on FIFA’s official website. “Qualifying is definitely within our reach. If you asked me five years ago I’d say realistically it wouldn’t have been." The Philippines began the second round of qualifying with a couple of impressive victories over Bahrain and Yemen. But four defeats in their next five qualifiers appeared to have put a huge dent in their prospects, before they finished off with a remarkable 3-2 triumph over DPR Korea to wrap up third spot. Etheridge, who has had to win back his place in coach Thomas Dooley’s starting eleven after facing stiff competition from the likes of Roland Muller and Patrick Deyto, believes they have come a long way since attempting to qualify for the Asian Cup by winning the now-defunct AFC Challenge Cup. “We were extremely close a couple of years ago when we lost to Palestine in the final of the Challenge Cup, which has probably been our biggest frustration, coming that close,” explained the 26-year-old, who used to be on the books of Fulham. “It was arguably a fraction too early but for us now we know we’re at that level. “Coming into the last two games (in the second round of qualifying) we knew we needed three points out of six to realistically keep on track for qualifying for the Asian Cup. “These were going to be the two toughest games no matter where we were in the group. “The celebrations (after beating DPR Korea) just showed how much the result meant to everyone in the stadium and the country – players included.” Before the Azkals turn their attentions to the third round of qualification for the Asian Cup, which begins next March, they will be aiming to win the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship for the first time ever at the end of this year. www.the-afc.com/asian-cup-2019/etheridge-and-azkals-set-sights-on-2019-afc-asian-cup

Looking at the pot I like our chances. But if I had to choose....
Hong Kong or India from Pot 2. Anyone from Pot 3. Guam from Pot 4.

my personal choice would be Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia to have a ASEAN taste. but if we want to take the easier route, India, Taiwan and Bhutan are the much easier opponents

Worst thing that could happen is The Philippines, Palestine, Lebanon, Kuwait Kuwait might not be able to participate. They are still technically suspended because of government interference in FA affairs so they have until Dec. 23 to get their affairs in order before the suspension is lifted. "Participation of Kuwait in the AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round Kuwait participated in the Preliminary Qualifier, advancing into the AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round after finishing in third position in Group G. The AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round will be played in a home-and-away format from March 28, 2017 to March 27, 2018. With FIFA having suspended Kuwait Football Association (KFA) on October 16,2015 from participating in any football activities, the Kuwait national teamis not allowed to take part in the AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round. With the draw for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round scheduled to take place on January 18, 2017, the Competitions Committee recommended that it was important – as was the case with the AFC Futsal Championship and AFC U-16 Championship in 2016 – to establish the position of Kuwait at least a month before the draw. It was, therefore, agreed that if Kuwait were still suspended on December 18, 2016, they will not be eligible to compete in the Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers Final Round." the-afc.com/competitions-division/afc-competitions-committee-recommends-new-afc-cup-format

This draw will be a lot easier with the availability of the European-based players. An all-UFL side could defeat the likes of Bhutan, Guam and Yemen. However, they need those who compete at a higher level in order to march to UAE19.

PFF chief Nonong Araneta says Azkals' home games in 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers might be held in the provinces. @news5aksyon
@news5aksyon Araneta says while the PSS in Bocaue is a good venue, accessibility is a major concern for fans from watching the games live.
@news5aksyon Araneta says they are considering Cebu and Panaad Stadium as possible venues for Azkals' home games.
@news5aksyon If held in Cebu or in Panaad Stadium, Araneta says problem with attendance to Azkals' games will not be of much concern.
After a dismal attendance in Manila and Bocaue, it's time to held it in football crazy cities and provinces. Also an opportunity to showcase what the host city of province has to offer to guests.
P.S. Manila is a basketball crazy city. It's difficult to held home games for football there. In Bocaue, only the true football lovers will come. Yesterday, a PBA game was held in Philippine Arena and has a good number of attendance. This shows Manila and surrounding provinces as basketball hotbeds in our country as people are willing to watch the game despite being far from city center and no public transport to the venue.

Kuwait was given until Jan. 11 by the AFC to remedy their situation, but it doesn't look that is happening and the FIFA Council in this letter seems to have made the decision to exclude them. The IOC is also not willing to raise their suspension at this time. Macau, the runnerup in the Solidarity Cup will probably be given the right to take Kuwait's place in the Asian Cup qualifiers. The exclusion of Kuwait provides a sigh of relief for their would-be opponents in qualifying. Many fans had been worried about the prospect of their team drawing a strong Kuwait contingent from pot four.

Seeding for AFC Asian Cup Qualifying announced. Four groups, then winner and runner-up move on to the finals. Based on the seeding see below how the pots will be organized. I like our chances here. Makes a huge difference being in the first pot. The worst group I can think of would be RP, Vietnam, Maldives, and Malaysia, and even with that group we would be competitive. The caveat, of course, is that all our players be available for those dates. No. Team 1 Jordan 2 Oman 3 Philippines 4 Bahrain 5 Kyrgyzstan 6 DPR Korea 7 India 8 Palestine 9 Tajikistan 10 Vietnam 11 Hong Kong 12 Turkmenistan 13 Maldives 14 Lebanon 15 Yemen 16 Afghanistan 17 Chinese Taipei 18 Myanmar 19 Malaysia 20 Singapore 21 Cambodia 22 Nepal 23 Bhutan 24 Macau www.the-afc.com/asian-cup-2019/teams-for-final-round-of-afc-asian-cup-uae-2019-qualifiers-confirmed

These teams from West Asia tend to have lower ranking points than they would normally have because they face tougher competition from that region all the time and don't always have their best players available because of their political situation but could conceivably have them released during major competitions like WC/AC qualifying.
