CAGAYAN DE ORO City — ROSEVALE School of Cagayan de Oro city in the posh village of Xavier Estates, Upper Balulang, Misamis Oriental is one of the more than 300 football teams that will compete in the 2nd edition of the Ceres Cup.
The tournament, which might be considered as the biggest summer football festival in the country today will kickoff on May 16 and 17, 2015 in different venues in Negros Occidental.
So far 380 teams in 14 categories have signed up for the tournament set simultaneously in four venues in Bacolod and Talisay cities.
The Opus Dei run Rosevale School will compete in the U13 category. They left Cagayan de Oro yesterday and are expected to be in Bacolod today and be ready for the kickoff tomorrow.
The venues of the tournament are the Ceres FC North Field across Ayala District, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College and Talisay City football and the Ceres FC Mandalagan Football Field located behind Convergys.
The tournament will open at the Ceres FC North Football Field in Talisay City with Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Vice Gov. Eugenio Lacson, Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella and Talisay Mayor Eric Saratan as guests.
More than 6,000 football players and officials together with 12,000 parents and 24,000 spectators are expected to troop to Bacolod to witness the football festivities. Last year's inaugural tournament has gathered 306 teams from across the country.
Leading the Rosevale School U13 team is head coach Mario Sumampong and his assistant Aliver Alagase Aguaviva. Members of the teams are striker Lyle Dy, midfielder Josh Go, left winger Jeff Cascara, right winger Renier Arada, defender Ino Butaslac, defender John Gementiza, midfielder Simon Smimine, defender Mamat Cascara, and goalkeeper Dave Mendoza.
Several Manila-based clubs that have already also confirmed their participation. They are La Salle-Greenhills, Ateneo de Manila, Hedsen Antipolo, Marist Manila, Sportivo FC Alabang, Ateneo Blue Guards, and Don Bosco-Makati.
Iloilo schools and clubs include Westbridge School, Sta. Barbara FC, Central Philippine University, La Paz FC, Jaro FC, I. Pag-asa, Jedds FC, Barotac Nuevo FC, Tamasak of Barotac, Ilaya FC-Barotac, Dumangas FC, and Jamindan Capiz FC.
Cebu-based participants are Consolacion United FC, Avengers FC-Cebu, USC BED-Cebu, Ateneo de Cebu, Don Bosco-Cebu, Barili-Cebu and Bantayan-Cebu.
Negros Oriental will send teams from Silliman University FC, Bayawan FC, Tanjay FC, Egan FC-Dumaguete City, and Dumaguete City High School while Mindanao has confirmed clubs from South Cotabato, Ateneo de Davao, and the Davao Crocodille FC.
Host-Negros Occidental will have San Carlos City-based Les Lions FT, Los Amigos and Borbados FC, Sagay City FC, Escalante City FC, Cadiz City FC, Silay City FC, Victorias City FC, Canetown-Victorias FC, DBTI FC, Minuluan-Talisay FC, Domingo Lacson NHS, Bata FC, Rizal Elementary School FC, Firefox FC, Recoletos FC, Real Negrense, FC de Bacolod, New Government Center FT, Panaad FC, Kandingan FC, LCC-Gardenville, Mabini Elem FT, University of St. La Salle, STI-West Negros University, Sum-ag ES, Buenavista FC, Athletico de Bago FC, Bago City FC, City of Kabankalan FC, La Castellana FC, Isabella FC, and Magallon FC.
Also joining the tournament are Murcia town-based Vietnamese Teams from the Catholic Ming Yuan FT-Murcia and St. John's Baptist Congregation.
The tournament will be played in a seven-a-side format wherein each team is assured to play not less than four matches every match date. Each team is allowed to have a maximum of 14 players and two officials. l.biantan@gmail.com
