Football specific stadium for booming cebu

WHEN Dynamic HERB Sports Inc. announced last week that they are building a football specific stadium plus an indoor facility at the South reclamation area, I was doubtful.
I have reasons because for many years, the Cebu City government and other governments in the province have failed to build a facility anywhere, how much more in the prime development area of South Reclamation.
But I forgot, Dynamic HERB Sports Inc. is not owned by the government. Based on my research, the company is owned by long time Cebu resident, Turkish, Ugur Tasci. He is married to a Cebuana dentist Joanne Palacios Tasci.
Ugur is also the co-owner with his brother Gem of the current Aboitiz Cup Men’s Open champion Leylam Football Club. They are also the owners of very popular food chain Leylam Shawarma which has more than 300 branches all over the country.
What I know is that the man running the football program of Leylam FC is former national youth coach and Azkal Oliver ‘Bingbing’ Colina. When I was the secretary general of the Cebu Football Association (CFA) in the late 80’s and early 90’s Bingbing was only a kid who tagged along with his older brother Dennis. Dennis used to play for the legendary M. Lhuillier Jewelers.
Now, he has retired from competitive football after stints with the Azkals and graduating from University of San Jose-Recolotes. He has turned into coaching and is considered as one of the top young coaches in the country today. He was one of the coaches of the original Little Azkals which included CdO players Troy Limbo and JB Borlongan.
When the stadium opens next year, Bingbing will be in charge of football. He is the trusted man of club owner Ugur Tasci. How could he not trust a coach who has given him back-to-back titles.
I was in Cebu for almost a week three weeks ago and I am very impressed by the rise of the beautiful game in the Queen City of the South. I saw a full packed Cebu City Sports Complex (Abellana) during the Cebu Global FC versus Davao Aguilas match in the Philippines Football League (PFL).
Last Sunday, fans trooped to Abellana again to witness Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) dethroned Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in the Cesafi secondary boys championship.
Thanks to Facebook we witnessed the hair raising pitch invasion of the DBTC fans after the final whistle. The cries of the defeat of the Ateneo de Cebu players were heart breaking but the photos of the DBTC players comforting the Ateneo kids were heart warming.
The explosion of the popularity of the beautiful game in the Queen City of the South is very impressive. Thanks to the efforts of the officials of the CFA led by it’s president Engr. Pericles Dakay.
However, the boom has caused one major. The lack of football facilities. Football clubs and teams are squabbling for pitches to practice and train.
Since the governments of Cebu City, Cebu Province and other towns do not care, never cared and will never care about this problem. It took a foreigner football fanatic to help solve this problem.
Colina said that Leylam FC might even join the Philippines Football League (PFL) as the other Cebu team in the country’s premier competition. If that happens then they will become the first PFL team to own a stadium.
Wait for next year and Cebu’s football community will have their field of dreams that they can call their own.

Over a year ago, my friend Ugur Tasci proudly showed me and a few of our media friends his investment in a FIFA sanctioned all-weather astro turf football field which he personally funded. Ugur, a Turkish national, first arrived in the Philippines in 1994, and together with his brother, Cem developed the Leylam Football Club that brought honors to Cebu in football tournaments here locally and abroad.

The football stadium is almost complete as of today. Covid-19 earlier halted and then delayed the finishing of Phase 1 of the Dynamic Herb Sports Complex located in the South Road Properties. The astro turf is in great shape, the grandstand and locker rooms completed and the light towers are all in place. In all, Ugur has invested almost P100 million on this football stadium.

The economic slowdown will see a further delay of proper seats being installed, lights for night games, LED giant screen and an electronic scoreboard. This is when corporate sponsors come in. With a little support that could run for years, they could engage in naming rights, brand lockouts, and numerous versions of corporate sponsorships.

Ugur also revealed that this stadium will now be the home of Cebu United FC, a professional team under his football empire to be fully based in Cebu. We now look forward to the next Philippine Football League when Cebu will have a pro team in AFC and FIFA sanctioned tournaments.

Cebu FC Academy Opens
As promised the Cebu FC, Cebu’s first-ever professional football club, is helping grow the Cebu football community by opening its academy, dubbed as the Cebu FC Academy at its home pitch, the Dynamic Herb - Borromeo Sports Complex.
Cebu FC Chairman, Ugur Tasci, said that through the academy, they hoped to introduce football at the grassroots level.
“The main objective is not competing but introducing football to the younger kids, make them see that the sport can be fun. We actually opened three weeks ago and we now have more than 100 kids registered,” said Tasci.
The academy is open for ages 5 to 18 years old with trainings held every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 6pm.
According to Tasci, the schedule for the training sessions will change once classes starts for the school-year 2022-23. Tentatively, they plan to hold it on Friday and Saturday.
Registration fee for the academy is P1,900 inclusive of 2 sets of jersey, ID, and a bag.
Introductory rate for 4 sessions is P2,000, 8 sessions for P3,000, 12 sessions for P4,000, and 16 sessions for P5,000.
The least minimum number of sessions that interested participants can sign up for is 4, and they can choose their schedule from the days available.
Cebu FC Team Manager, Hannah Wong, explained that they opted to have interested participants register by sessions, rather than monthly packages so the parents and their children can maximize the value of their time and money.
“We made it that way because we understand that parents also have jobs so they may not have the time to accompany their children everyday, so they can choose the schedule, and if they have to go somewhere, they can just come back and continue their training,” said Wong.
The club also wants the participants to enjoy learning the sport of football.
The academy is overseen by Head Coach Levent Öztürk with the help of Coach Ref Cuaresma as the overall coordinator.
Tasci said that they are also open to joining competitions as student trainees of the academy.
Those who are seen with potential will get a chance to be part of the youth elite teams that Cebu FC plans to form later this year.

The CEBU FOOTBALL CLUB (Cebu FC) is the first professional Football Club from Cebu that is duly- registered under the Philippine Football League. The Club will proudly represent the entire Cebu province in all professional leagues on a national level and eventually the country in international tournaments.
To ensure that all categories are equally-represented, the Cebu FC will have men’s and women’s teams in the professional category as well as a youth team for the younger age bracket.
