A league for Philippine football? This will become a reality as the Philippine Football Federation has forged a partnership with telecom giant Smart Communications to finance a local football club championship. The partnership will last for a span of 10 years, with the giant telco releasing a total of P80 million for the project aimed at providing opportunities for skilled football players. Smart Communications made the offer during a PFF board meeting in Cebu the other day. Newly-installed PFF president Mariano “Nonong" Araneta approved the proposal Monday. “This will be a perfect opportunity to provide homegrown Azkals a venue to hone their skills more," said Araneta. “Who are we not to accept that kind of offer?" The offer was laid out by Patrick Gregorio, Smart Sports marketing and special project head, during the board of governors meeting in Cebu on Saturday. Gregorio said the fund will help in the creation of a Filipino Premiere League. According to Gregorio, at least four companies — controlled by businessman/sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan — are willing to sponsor a team. These are Smart, Meralco, Maynilad, and Cignal TV-TV5.

This is good news, but what happens to UFL if this pushes thru? They shouldve just merged or helped UFL maybe? I heard Smart is planning a League that would involve major cities in the country. The players and club teams will be divided? UFL has 20 teams if Im not mistaken(1st &2nd DIV) if we are going to create a whole new league, where will the new clubs get players?
As much as I want a futbol league with regional format, I dont think its possible right now. They tried that in basketball and it folded and that league was even backed by ABS-CBN. Its to expensive to have it that way. They should think 10 times before they launch this one so it wont fold like the 2 other ones they tried before.

IMO, i think they should follow the format of UAAP & NCAA where universities and colleges compete in the finals. we need the support of our universities and college schools to boost the interest of our youth. it would be great if we can have a "la salle vs ateneo" atmosphere in every football games here in the philippines
