PREVIEW: Maldives vs Philippines Coming off the heels of their historic result against China PR in Bacolod last month, the Philippines goes on an away trip in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 / AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2, first against Maldives today, 14 November 2019 at the National Stadium in Male. Sitting in third of group A with four points after three matches, the Azkals are looking to extend their unbeaten run, as they face the South Asian side for the third time overall in the past five years. This will be their first meeting in Male since their pulsating semi-final encounter in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup where the Philippines stunned the hosts 3-2 in extra time to advance to the final. Their most recent match-up was last September 2015 in Manila, where the Azkals came away with a 2-0 win against Maldives. Among the players in the 23-man squad, goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, left-back Daisuke Sato, and midfielder Stephan Schrock are part of the six players who went there five years ago en route to a runner-up finish. Additionally, the Philippines has four players from their Under-22 pool in Yrick Gallantes, Edison Suerti, Justin Baas, and Marco Casambre. Following this match, the Philippines head to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for their second meeting with Syria on Tuesday, 19 November 2019. pff.org.ph/2019/11/14/preview-maldives-vs-philippines/

Azkals take on dangerous Maldives The Philippine Azkals take on dangerous host Maldives when they plunge into the second round of the 2022 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup qualifiers tonight at the National Football Stadium in Malé. Inspired by their draw against powerhouse China, the No. 126 Azkals will face the No. 156 Red Snapper at 4 p.m. (7 p.m. in Manila). Stephan Shrock PHOTO BY DJ DIOSINA The Philippines held the higher-ranked China to a goalless draw to split the points last October 15 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City. It was the Filipino footballers’ best result against the Chinese since their 2-1 win vs China in the Far East Games a century ago. The stalemate kept the Azkals at No. 3 with four points in the five-nation Group A of the tournament that also serves as a joint qualifier for the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup. The group winner will advance to the third qualifying round of the World Cup and secure its spot in the Asian Cup while the runner-up will also enter the next round and possibly get an Asian Cup berth. Cardiff City FC goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, hailed because of his crucial saves against China, is expected to anchor the Azkals’ backline anew along with defenders Alvaro Silva, Carli De Murga and Daisuke Sato. Captain-talisman Stephan Shrock will spearhead the attack together with forwards Mark Hartmann and Patrick Reichelt. On the other hand, Maldives is eager to bounce back from a slim defeat to Syria, 1-2, last October 10 at the neutral venue Rashid Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Maldivians will also try to hike their three markers at No. 4. Veteran striker Ali Ahsfaq and forward Ibrahim Mahudhee, who scored Maldives’ two goals in the joint qualifiers are expected to lead the home squad. www.manilatimes.net/2019/11/14/sports/football-times/azkals-take-on-dangerous-maldives/655767/

Televised anywhere? Or livestream? I couldn't find a livestream unfortunately. I am using cedefl tupas tweets to get glimpses of gameplay as well as follow the action and score. Cedelf P. Tupas @cedelfptinq 1-0 @theazkalsph Iain Ramsay with nice control before rifling home a shot from near post. 52’ Yeah!!!! Remarkable persistence for the @theazkalsph! Strauss keeps the attack alive with Guirado. Woodland’s piledriver rattles the bar, Reichelt’s header also hits the upright and Strauss stabs it home from close range. 2-1 Maldives pull a goal back thru Hassan Naiz. But thats the final whistle there. A win for the Azkals.

PH Azkals overcome Maldives for 2nd win in World Cup qualifiers Iain Ramsay and Patrick Strauss struck in the second half as the Philippines overcame a stiff challenge from the Maldives, 2-1, Thursday for only its second victory in the joint 2022 Fifa World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup Qualifying at National Stadium here. Ramsay fired the opener in the 53rd minute, controlling excellently from the edge of the area before firing a rocket from a narrow angle to beat Mohammed Faisal on the Maldives goal. The second goal came in the 69th minute when Strauss stabbed home from close range after Luke Woodland and Patrick Reichelt were denied by the upright. Substitute Hassan Naiz denied the Azkals of a clean sheet with a goal in stoppage time that turned out to be too little too late. Coming off a goalless draw against China in Bacolod City last month, the Azkals traveled to this country known for its postcard-pretty islands and beaches, needing to maintain a level of consistency in their play. With Martin Steuble out due to suspension, coach Scott Cooper sent in Luke Woodland to play on the right side of the five-man backline. But it was the hosts who were knocking the ball around with confidence early on with the Azkals struggling to get a grip on the match. Still, the visitors had the first real chance of the match when the Maldivians were whistled for a handball inside the area. Reichelt stepped up to take the penalty only to be denied by Faisal. A goalless first half prompted the Azkals to amp up the intensity after the restart. Ramsay fired a warning with a snapshot from the edge of the area just 30 seconds into the second half. The win pushed the Azkals’ tally to seven points from four matches, although they remained in third spot behind Syria and China. The Filipinos travel to Dubai on Friday to face the Syrians on Tuesday at Rashid Stadium. sports.inquirer.net/373389/ph-azkals-overcome-maldives-for-2nd-win-in-world-cup-qualifiers
