Good to see a lot of potential young prospects for the national team from North America. I hope we have the seem deep list of prospects coming from Europe as well. There's a good bunch on Europe (and even in Australia) as well. Wouldn't want to tamper with the Suzuki Cup discussions here by discussing about them in depth. I'm just gonna update on everything in the Scouting section of the boards.

Straight from an opening day defeat, the Philippine Azkals got their 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup campaign back on track with a 7-0 demolition of Timor Leste, Saturday evening at the National Stadium in Singapore. The outcome was the Philippines’ biggest result in its history of participating in the Suzuki Cup, eclipsing the country’s 4-0 over Indonesia back in the 2014 edition. It is also the Azkals’ highest margin of victory since the 8-0 victory over Cambodia back in 2013. Martin Steuble opened the Timor Leste floodgates with a strike from outside the box in the 21st minute. Amin Nazari then converted his second goal of the competition from close range in the 31st minute while Angel Guirado headed the ball home in the 35th minute. Patrick Reichelt performed a cool finish in the 40th minute to score the Azkals’ fourth goal of the contest and Jesper Nyholm, who was unmarked at the far post, headed the ball into the net at the 45th minute. Bievenido Maranon then joined the party at the 45+1 minute with a close-range finish. In the second half, Kevin Ingreso added the Azkals’ seventh goal thanks to an assist from substitute Yrick Gallantes at the 78th minute. With the win, the Philippines gets its first three points in Group A and moves temporarily into 2nd place on the basis of goal difference as Thailand and Myanmar are set to square off later. On the other hand, Timor Leste is in last place with zero points. The Philippines shall continue its campaign on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, against Thailand. The kickoff time is at 5:30 PM. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/azkals-reach-seventh-heaven-with-timor-leste-rout-in-suzuki-cup/227379

Azkals coach Stewart Hall was glad the team achieved their goals ahead of the Timor Leste match.
“I set the players three targets referring to the mental side,” said Hall. “First one was win the game because we need three points desperately. Second one, score goals because we need goal difference because it may come down to goal difference [for qualification] so we need goals.”
“The third one, get in front early because I want to make substitutions. I want to use 16 players. Those were the three objectives and we did it,” said Hall.

THE Philippine Azkals were ousted from semifinal contention in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020, losing to Thailand, 2-1, on Tuesday at the Singapore National Stadium. Azkals vs Thailand recap Teerasil Dangda scored two goals including a penalty in the 78th minute after an equalizer from the Azkals, who were eliminated with the loss to the War Elephants. Patrick Reichelt equalized after a strike from a failed clearance by Thailand in the 57th minute to stay in contention for the next round, but it was still not enough. Thailand drew a foul, a contentious call at least for the side of the Philippines, after Amani Aguinaldo brought down Thitiphan Puangjan inside the box. Azkals coach Stewart Hall later described the foul as “dubious.” Terrasil, who in the 26th minute became the most prolific scorer in the history of AFF Suzuki Cup with his 18th goal of his career, knocked in the spot kick over Azkals keeper Kevin Hansen. “Obviously, it was the deciding factor,” Hall said. “I’d like to see it a few times. My players are not happy at the decision." The Azkals conceded the first goal after a strike by Teerasil on a cross by Teerathon Bunmathan, but Reichelt’s equalizer was the first given up by Thailand in the tournament. “We gave away the ball away in the corner, we were a bit sloppy and loose on possession. We gave the ball away and they got the cross in to the goal. That could have been avoided. But having said that, they are a good team. They play some good football. They attack together. They defend together. Credit to Thailand,” said Hall. www.spin.ph/football/azkals-vs-thailand-recap-suzuki-cup-patrick-reichelt-a795-20211214

I can't help but think that with the recent results in the Suzuki Cup, the team hasn't really progressed in more than 5 or 6 years. Beating Timor-Leste soundly isn't a gauge of improvement. We should be beating Singapore regularly. But no. Can't beat them and can't beat Thailand. Quite disappointing.

I tender my expectation for this Suzuki Cup but it still hurts as a fan. We should strengthen our PH based players. We can't compete with our ASEAN neighbors if we can't get the players based in Europe.

Maranon scores hat-trick as Azkals end Suzuki Cup with Myanmar win In what was their final fixture of the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup, Bienvenido Maranon and the rest of the Philippine Azkals ended their campaign on a high note against Myanmar with a narrow 3-2 victory, Saturday evening, at the Bishan Stadium in Singapore. The 35-year-old Maranon led the charge with a first-half hat-trick scored at the 16th, 19th, and 45th minutes to set the tone for the Filipinos. He capitalized on Myanmar’s failure to clear their lines for his first goal, converted Iain Ramsay’s cross for the second, and headed the ball home just before the break to seal his achievement. The United City star is the first Filipino player to score three goals in a single game in the Suzuki Cup group stages as retired striker Ian Araneta did so against Timor Leste but in the qualifying tourney of the 2010 edition. “The beginning was hard. Every time you come in as a new player, everything is very hard,” said the former Cadiz player. “But now I find myself very good, in the training, I find everything very good also and it shows in the game. Today I showed what I can give to them.” Come the second half, substitute midfielder Htet Phyoe Wai was able to score past Azkals goalie Kevin Hansen to provide Myanmar hope at the 74th minute of the contest. The 21-year-old winger then scored again at the 86th minute to set up a tense finale for the Philippines. Ultimately, though, the Philippines held on to the narrow win and it ends its Group A stint in third place this year with six points at the back of two wins and two losses. The Filipinos scored a total of 12 goals during the past four matches, which makes it the highest-scoring campaign in the country’s history for this competition. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/maranon-scores-hat-trick-as-azkals-end-suzuki-cup-with-myanmar-win/228197

Hopefully they can get their best players to participate in the Asian Cup qualifiers and finals so we can really see what they are capable of.

We should be beating Singapore regularly. But no. Can't beat them and can't beat Thailand. Quite disappointing. You have to take into consideration that while other teams actually had active local leagues the past 2 years since COVID struck, the Philippines either cancelled theirs or had very short tournaments so many players on the roster of local teams who were called up(due to the lack of players from abroad) were not in top form for the Suzuki Cup. COVID is also one of the reasons why so many players based abroad declined invitations in the AC qualifiers and the Suzuki Cup. As the coach mentioned, while other teams including Thailand brought their best players(including some who were playing in higher level leagues in Europe), the Azkals only had their C team to represent them in the Suzuki Cup. “If I give you the stats, we’re about 27 players short of what we consider to be our strongest squad.”
