At least the Philippines had one competitive friendly a close loss to Vietnam. Indonesia(one of the contenders in our group stage in the AFF Cup) did not have any yet this December. Indonesia's federation's antics in the past hasn't exactly endeared them with other AFF nations even threatening to leave the AFF at one point. In response, India has expressed interest in joining the AFF in the next cycle in response when Indonesia threatened to leave.

www.affmitsubishielectriccup.com/2022/news/preview/1903-preview-cambodia-v-philippinesThe Philippines enter the tournament under freshly appointed coach Josep Ferre with a new-look squad that features only four players with more than 14 caps. Appointed less than two weeks ago, the Spanish coach said he is excited by the opportunity to lead this revamped Azkals side. “I think we have made a decision to build this squad around a group of young players with some more experienced ones as well and for me this is my first time in charge of a national team so I’m also very excited,” he said.

The Philippine's lack of preparation, youth and inexperience showed as Cambodia defeated the Philippines 3-2 in an upset.
The last time the Philippines lost to Cambodia was 20 years ago in 2002 so this is definitely a massive upset.
The Philippines did have 70% possession of the ball but falling 2 goals down in the first half was just too much for the offensively limited Philippine lineup to overcome.
The commentators did say that like other AFF countries, Cambodia have started using players from Europe to reinforce their team so that might have contributed to the upset.
Brilliant midfield plays led by veteran Stephen Schrock but our defenders were sloppy and disorganized, while the strikers lacked composure.

Defense was indeed bad. Ramdam talaga yung absence ng veteran players dagdag pa yung lack of preparation (as usual, palagi na lang with PFF; you don't even get to be disappointed any more because you're already expecting it). I was hoping for a tie at least so the loss was very disappointing. Anyway nag-improve na rin naman Cambodia (correct me if I'm wrong pero si Honda pa rin yung coach nila, di ba?) so I wouldn't call this result a "massive" upset. Hoping for better results in the next three games. I'm going to be honest though, it's not looking bright for our AFF campaign this time around - but I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong of course in the next matches.

Damn. Once again this team does itself no favours with it's lack of recruitment from all available places. Where are the Baldisimo brothers, Kadin Chung or Adian Daniels, Patrick Metcalfe in Norway? all of these guys are currently in their off-season and could have joined.

Not to mention Gerrit Holtmann, Neil Etheridge, Oliver Bias, Phoenix Patterson, etc. Our team has potentially have the players with the most experience and the most expensive pro contracts in the AFF who play in Europe, the MLS and the Thai Leagues but none of them were invited or available for this tournament.

The Philippines redeemed themselves at the AFF Championship with a 5-1 win over Brunei. However because of their surprising loss to Cambodia, they need to win their final 2 games against Indonesia and Thailand to advance beyond the group stage. www.affmitsubishielectriccup.com/2022/news/1953-report-philippines-5-1-brunei-darussalamThe Philippines bounced back from their opening-day defeat to Cambodia by posting a 5-1 win over Brunei Darussalam in their second outing in Group A of the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Friday. In-form Kenshiro Daniels opened the scoring for Josep Ferre’s side in the seventh minute before Sandro Reyes found the second five minutes later. A left-foot stunner from Jesus Melliza and a double from substitute Sebastian Rasmussen after the interval gave the Azkals a 5-1 win as Razimie Ramlli’s goal proved a mere consolation for Brunei DS. The result means the tightly contested Group A now has four teams level on three points as the Philippines joined Indonesia, Cambodia and defending champions Thailand among the nations to have posted a win already in the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022.

While I'm not surprised at the loss against Thailand, that was quite a tragic performance from us especially in the first half. Also, I'm just heavily facepalming every time Shrock receives the ball and gives it away too easily. It's honestly time for him to hang his boots.
And it looks like we're out of contention, even if we win the match against Indonesia next, correct? Unless both Indonesia and Cambodia also get spectacularly sucker-punched by Thailand. Cambodia maybe, but definitely not Indonesia.
EDIT: Oh, nevermind. I overlooked this important info above, to quote: "They need to win their final 2 games against Indonesia and Thailand to advance beyond the group stage." Well then, I just hope we at least go out by beating Indonesia and placing third in the group stage for a consolation.

How was the team’s preparation? I really think with a new coach we should start building a new team around Gerrit Holtmann. I do agree that Schrocky needs to hang the boots at least internationally. I hope we get new players from North America, Europe and the young guys ( with guys as old as 27-28 years old the oldest but must be playing tier 1 European club teams like Holtmann) like Reyes, Rasmussen etc. me thinks we must get guys as young as 18-19 years old to play for the senior team. We’ll just my two cents.

I haven't been able to watch most of the games in the AFF Championship but I always thought their lack of preparation under the new coach who was hired less than 2 weeks before the start of the tournament was going to handicap them particularly in the first game against Cambodia. We should have easily beaten Cambodia. They were just better prepared than us.
