MANILA—Businessman Manny V. Pangilinan expressed confidence the Philippine Azkals will be within the top three in Southeast Asia very soon as he formalized a 10-year support amounting to a total P80 million for football.
Pangilinan, who led the unveiling of the MVP Sports Foundation Inc. at the Meralco Multipurpose Hall late Friday night, said he is not giving away a huge amount just for nothing, but intends to help make the Philippine football team among the top three teams in the Asean region someday.
“For football, the goal is to be in the top three in Southeast Asia. Why? We lost to the top team Indonesia, 1-0, twice. That’s not a fluke. This gives me reason to believe we can be among the best in the region,” said Pangilinan during the unveiling also attended by Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta and some members of the team.
He said that under the agreement with the PFF, they will be funding the Azkals’ campaign in various international tournaments and will help bankroll the formation of a Filipino Premiere Football League to provide opportunities for the players.
“The time is certainly ripe for us to appreciate, love and support this universally-loved sport of football. Thanks to the PFF and our premier football team Azkals, we have come to realize that Filipinos can be competitive in this sport,” said Pangilinan during the gathering also graced by top officials of Meralco, Smart, PLDT, Maynilad, TV 5 and Metro Pacific Groups.
Aside from football, the MVP sports foundation will also be supporting seven other sports—basketball, boxing, cycling, taekwondo, badminton, tennis and running.
Air 21 owner Bert Lina showed up during the launching and joined Pangilinan on stage.
He also formalized his own pledge of a P21-million deal over 10 years with the PFF.
For his part, PFF president Araneta said the out-pouring of support is very encouraging and vowed to develop footballin the grassroots level so that it may continue its rise to prominence in a country that made basketball like a religion.
