I was sitting beside Bob G during the match, it was evident that the lads were ill prepared and lacked the depth (and obviously the budget) especially with the forwards (HK and JPN bullied us from the scrum up to the line outs). One thing positive I can take from these games are that we're giving the more caps for the players, a larger pool for the coming tournaments in the future.
PRFU said that Japan Rugby Football Union didn't like the UMak pitch so PRFU had to settle with the Southern Plains pitch in far-flung Canlubang. The pitch is actually superb in quality, all it needed were permanent stands since its only the training facility for the team. The fans, to be honest with you guys, it was eerily quiet the whole match and there more expats and visiting Japanese fans are present compared to the pinoys unlike last year's tournament.

Too bad Rizal wasn't available yet. The Rizal pitch looks really nice now.

we'll have two decisive games if the lads want to be part of the elite Asian sides in ARFU. One is against Sri Lanka, the Tusker as they're known in their country have a home advantage this coming weekend, and the other is Korea on the 24th.

And the boys just beat an ill-disciplined Sri Lanka side with a win on the closing moments of the match. Jake Letts scores a try while Alex Aronson was given a re-conversion due to Tuskers running towards the ball before he kicked it on the 1st time. The game ended at 26 - 25 for the Volcanoes leaving the home crowd disappointed.
A decisive match against Korea on the 24th of May in Southern Plains, Canlubang is must see. If we notch another win at expense of the Korean side, we'll retain our elite status in Asia since ARFU have changed the format.

Say bye bye for us in the Elite Asian circle as Korea booted us out yesterday with a scoreline of 52 -22. We go down to 2nd tier of Asian Rugby, which is Div 1 while the champs of that division would play a relegation play off against the wooden spoon team from the top 3 in order to qualify to the Elite level. That match was the last one played by Michael Letts ever in his international and in professional career. He's one of the best players who can kick accurate punts that can give more meters for the team in the pitch. In other news, Japan qualifies for RWC 2015 in England and Hong Kong plays in repechage playoffs against Uruguay.

THE Philippine Rugby Football Union will host Division 1 of the Asian Rugby Championship on May 6 and 9 at the Philippine Stadium in Bulacan. The ARC, formerly known as the Asian 5 Nations, is Asia’s premier competition for Rugby Union. The Philippine Volcanoes, ranked fourth in Asia, are the top-ranked team in Division 1, followed by Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan and Singapore. The event kicks off on May 6 with the Sri Lanka battling Kazakhstan at 2 p.m. and the Philippines taking on Singapore at 4 p.m. May 9 will pit the opening-day losers in a battle for third place at 4 p.m. and the opening-day winners batting for the title. “We’re very excited to be back playing on home soil,” said Volcanoes captain Oliver Abalos Saunders. “The prospect of playing in front of our countrymen and relatives never fails to pump up the team. It’s a special feeling to feel and hear the crowd’s support. It definitely pushes us to do better.” The ARC is the first international sporting event that will be held in the 25,000-seater Philippine Stadium, part of the world-class Ciudad de Victoria complex in Bulacan. “The Philippine Stadium was the key to securing the right to host the tournament,” said Philippine Rugby Football Union director Matt Cullen. “Upon inspection, the tournament officials were immediately impressed with this world-class facility. We’re grateful for the incredible support that the Iglesia ni Cristo has shown throughout the bidding process which thankfully resulted in the Philippines’ being awarded hosting duties.” The Philippine Volcanoes competed in the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens held in Moscow and in the 17th Asian Games finished fifth place. The Volcanoes will compete in the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore this year and the 2016 Olympic Qualifiers for Asia. www.spin.ph/football/news/philippine-volcanoes-asian-rugby-finals-philippine-sports-stadiumTHE Philippine national men’s rugby team guns for a championship berth when it takes on Singapore in the opener of the Asian Rugby Championship Division 1 on Wednesday at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan. The top-ranked Volcanoes, who are bannered by pros from rugby leagues in Japan, the US, Australia and Britain, seek to capitalize on experience and crowd support in the 4 p.m. match against the No. 4 Singaporeans. Second-ranked Sri Lanka and No. 3 Kazakhstan tangle in the first match at 2 p.m., with the winner also advancing to the finale set Saturday. “We’re fairly confident we’ll beat Singapore and be in the finals,” said Matt Cullen, a director of the Philippine Rugby Football Union. The Volcanoes last faced the Singaporeans in the 2012 Asian 5 Nation Division 1 meet that at Rizal Memorial Stadium, beating the visitors, 37-20, en route to the tournament title. “Singapore will play a very fast, fit game. They’re a very, very fit team, they can run for 80 minutes, no problem. The advantage we have is that we’re fit but we’re also skillful,” said center Justin Coveney, who plays in Japan. Coveney will be joined by Austin Dacanay, Michael Duhig, Matt Bellenie, David Feeney, Ashley Heward, Terry Carrol, Benjamin Mudie, Steve Howorth, veteran Jake Letts, captain Oliver Saunders, Harry Morris, Timothy Bweheni, Jeff Gregson, Gareth Holgate, Masayuki Sekiguchi, Phil Abraham, David Robinson-Polkey, Fred Morris, Christopher Anderson, Cleo Gomez, Daniel Matthews and Alex Aronson. “Our players are well-experienced overseas and even though we only had 10 days in camp, we still have our advantage. We always look forward coming back together. We have confidence in our team, we have confidence in one another, that we’ll get the job done and put our best foot forward,” said Letts. The Volcanoes, coached by Stu Woodhouse, are the first national squad to see action at the 20,000-seater Philippine Sports Stadium and they hope to put up a good show for supporters. “We’re all very excited to be playing in front of a home crowd and we’re going to leave everything on the field to bring honor to the Philippines,” said Saunders.
