THE Philippines has been offered to host the ASEAN Football Federation-Suzuki Cup within the next three years. The Philippine Football Federation said it has received an offer to host the tournament from Ian Mathie, vice president of World Sports Group, the lead organizer of the Suzuki Cup. Mathie told PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta in a faxed message that the Philippines will have the option of hosting the Suzuki Cup in 2012 or 2014. He added that a strict criteria will be followed should the Philippines accept the offer, and their group is willing to assist the PFF in identifying a suitable stadium, and help in doing upgrades and renovations to meet the criteria. So far, the PFF is studying an earlier offer to use a property in Tambo, Parañaque being donated by El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde, as a new training venue and possible site for a world-class football stadium. The 4.5-hectare land is being offered for lease for a period of 25 years to the PFF. The group stages of the biennial tournament will be co-hosted by Malaysia and Thailand, with the Philippines already seeded sixth this year. Because of this, the Philippine Azkals national football team will no longer have to go through the qualifying stages for the lower-ranked teams to be held in Myanmar. The Azkals will play in the tournament proper with Southeast Asia’s top teams Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, defending champion Malaysia, and Singapore when the tournament is held in 2012.
