Of course they require arm strength, but you can still throw some of them effectively at lower speeds esp. if you mix them with a fastball of higher velocity as it will confuse the hitters. What I am saying is that height is not as important with these off speed pitches as an overpowering 90+ mph fastball would be.

NZL is currently trashing THA 9-0 at the bottom of the 5th. One more run and is all over via the mercy rule.
NZL just surrendering one hit. It seems NZL is strong and it shows as well the strength of the TPE squad since TPE whitewashed NZL in their first game.

New Zealand's squad consists mostly of recruits from US minor leagues and colleges just like us. If we lose to Taipei, we will have to play them and see who recruited better. Taipei is going to be tough despite not having their minor leaguers around as all their players are professionals.

Philippines, Chinese Taipei slug way into matchup By Debby Wu / Special to MLB.com | 11/15/2012 11:16 AM ET XINZHUANG, Taiwan -- Following big wins in their respective tournament openers, Chinese Taipei and the Philippines will both depend on their fierce lineups in their upcoming clash as World Baseball Classic qualifiers resume Friday at Xinzhuang Stadium in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Fans can watch a free, live stream of the game at worldbaseballclassic.com at 5:30 a.m. ET on Friday. Chinese Taipei overwhelmed New Zealand in a 10-0 victory Thursday and closed the game at the seventh inning by mercy rule. Successive singles and doubles from Chinese Taipei's powerful lineup in the bottom of the fifth lifted the team into the matchup vs. the Philippines, probably its toughest competition in the qualifier. "'I've been following the Philippines' pitchers, including [Friday starter] Ryuya Ogawa, to make sure our hitters will be familiar with their pitching before the game," said Chinese Taipei manager Chang-Heng Hsieh. Ogawa, who pitches for the Chunichi Dragons farm team in Japan, finished the season 4-5 this season with a 3.50 ERA. He also started one game for the Dragons big league squad, giving up two runs over four innings and taking a loss. "Chinese Taipei is a very good team, very polished," Philippines skipper Jim Ramos said. "We hope to be able execute the basics and try to score more runs than them." Philippines routed Thailand, 8-2, on Thursday's game, taking advantage of an error-prone Thai defense, which committed seven miscues. The Philippines, with a pitching staff filled mostly lefties, used five pitchers against Thailand and successfully suppressed Thai hitters including former Red Sox and Yankee slugger Johnny Damon. web.worldbaseballclassic.com/2013/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121115&content_id=40296678

NZL has scored at least 1 run in every inning. That's impressive.

Yes, you need height especially for pitchers because taller pitchers can get more velocity and better angles (an advantage given by the pitching mound). But it doesn't mean a short pitcher cannot be successful. Think of Pedro Martinez. I think Filipinos are natural players in baseball. We can pitch, bat, and field. Good luck against Taiwan! We can do this! Agree with you, height is not known to the filipinos, if a local had a height they probably end up to playing basketball hehehe........training is the key, technical and scientific training on biomechanics of pitching can suffice, there are few cuban and japanese pitcher below 6 feet excel in MLB. Just further development is what Philippine baseball needs....however if asaphil and philab can scout a taller pitcher and develop it then it is a big plus....... well wishing the blu boys reach the second round to elevate our ranking in baseball.

Blu boys was outclassed by taiwanese 16-0.
errors, no communication on the defensive play, more errors on the 1st base, and why they still keeping espenilli??
assessment:
Reinforcement is not always the saviour but it is a big plus if they were called up at least for a month for team chemistry build-up. We are far beyond in technical baseball long years of neglect and corruption of the baseball amatuer federation of the philippines. after a long years of mishandling the baseball federation Navasero families should surrender the seat and give it other. Clinical and technical training is lacking from the locals, ABAP should address this. At least recently an american coach is holding the team, hope that he would stay for a longer year. Development is still the key.
Well still hopeful against the new zealand. Go blu boys

I am not surprised by this result. The best athletes in Taiwan play professional baseball. It is their # 1 team sport. Most of our tall players end up playing basketball so few are left to join a fringe sport like baseball. There is indeed a need for a change in leadership over there. There has been very little improvement in the domestic baseball scene since I left awhile ago. Unlike the other teams, the Philippines did not play a single friendly as a complete team prior to this tournament, so those mistakes are to be expected.
