He supports Mexico... Well, here in Mexico most Primera división clubs are incorporated (a.ka. Sociedades Anonimas, SA)... except from Atlas (and Pumas UNAM) who follows the Argentina model and are always with debt problems (just as Argentinean clubs) so ALL the owners are bussiness men, they like football, but to have a knowledge in the sports is less needed than knowledge in the bussiness... CF Monterrey is owned by FEMSA, Tigres by CEMEX, Club América and San Luis by Televisa, Monarcas Morelia and Jaguares by Grupo Salinas (a.k.a TV Azteca), CD Guadalajara (a.k.a Chivas) by Jorge Vergara, owner of Onmilife and other companies... and so on... all those companies are pretty stable and have a strong presence in Mexico or Latin America, and some of them even in the world (Cemex).

If Pacquiao starts his own football club, would this encourage other rich people in PH to start their own also? The only way Pacquiao and other wealthy Filipinos will invest their money in founding football clubs is if it's going to be a profitable venture. I admit that I'm not knowledgeable about what the minimum amount is to establish your own professional football club in PI, but ask yourself this question, would you be willing to invest a minimum of say $1.5 million (not pesos) in forming your own football club if you know there's a small probability of recouping your investments? If you say yes, then we know you're not a businessman because you're basically throwing money away. A businessman, no matter how rich, will always look at the bottom line before getting involved. And how does a team make profit? Here's a few I can think of right off the bat - corporate sponsorship, revenue from the league's tv contract, revenue from game attendance, sale of team paraphernalia, etc. Most of the stadiums in the Philippines desperately needs to be upgraded which means spending a minimum of $5 - $10 million to meet FIFA standards. And I'm being generous with these figures because the reality is over $20 million for a 25k - 30k stadium. If I'm not mistaken, most of the stadiums can only accommodate between 10-20 thousand people. The majority of the seats probably charges less than P100. So, for you to recover your investments and establish a steady stream of income, you'd have to build contemporary stadiums with modern amenities and sell the naming rights of the stadium to big corporations. One of the most successful basketball arenas in the US is Orlando Magic's Amway Arena. I realize that a comparison between a basketball arena and a football stadium is like comparing mangoes to pineapples but the concept of how Amway Arena was built is an excellent blueprint to emulate because the average Magic fan spends nearly $200 in the arena, which was the highest in the NBA.

Out of topic but since we will be playing Hongkong this Friday, I wanted to mention that Jackie Chan, who is a just as big a celebrity in Hongkong as Manny Pacquiao is to us, is a major sponsor/owner for the Sunhei club in the Hongkong Premier league. He is a big football fan and wanted to get involved in the development of football in Hongkong so he invested in that club.

Prior to his fight against Clottey last year, Pacquiao had the chance to visit Mexico where he was received like a star. They gave him a replica kit of their national football team, as the World Cup was just around the corner. He received the gift graciously and gave the team his support. After the Suzuki Cup last year, he was impressed (as everyone was) with the Azkals. He has said that when it came to football, he was a fan of Mexico but now the Azkals has him excited. Had he not gone into politics I can see him forming a football club but right now I think he has too much on his mind... including maybe basketball.

Jinky Pacquiao was at the Nepal game. Manny as we all know is training in the US for his fight against Marquez. Hopefully we can get Manny interested enough at some point to sponsor a team.

Who said he's still rich? If Uncle Bob needs to advance him his fight purse before every match for the past few years that only means he has no cash left. That has been reported many times already. Not surprising given his spendthrift lifestyle, lack of business sense and the unsavory company/hangers-on he keeps. Even his newfound Born-Against religion is turning out to be a big drain on his pocket.
