As Malditas coach:
Comments on the game v.s. Myanmar (2-0 L):
Yes I am pissed, and so are the girls! We had this game. Yes it was a very tough game, but we held our ground. Yes Myanmar dominated the first half, and we had a defensive laps on the 44th min. Can't take the goals back. We just have to make sure we eliminate the lapses when we play Thailand. Myanmar thought that we would just surrender in the 2nd half. We came out fighting. No score for Myanmar. Our defense held, and our mids started to play better. We had 4 clear shots on goal. Myanmar GK saved them. Good job. Any one of those goals could have turned the game around. The last 15 mins was already one sided. We kept on attacking Myanmar. The game was wide open, but we never lost our endurance. Myanmar was running on empty already.
The hand ball inside the penalty box was a mortal sin. That cost us the momentum and the game! If that was called? Who knows? We practiced penalties for 2 days. So we were expecting that. What I was not expecting was the no call. If this team was more superior than the Malditas, then so be it. But that is not the case. Anyway, we have to beat Thailand and blow out Malaysia. I'm pissed! The girls are pissed! Am letting them go ballistic on Wed. If Thailand wants to win this game? They will need to take it from us!

Comment on the game v.s. Thailand (5-1 L):
Thailand played a complete game today. We were able to contain their attacks and counter for much of the first half. The only had 6 attempts on goal, unfortunately the converted 3 of them. The first was a shot outside the penalty box that bounced of the crossbar (miscommunication with our mids). The second goal came from a diagonal pass from #3, which was converted by #5 (beautiful diagonal pass). Our plan was to shutdown #3. We did for much of the match, except of that one pass she completed to #5. The last goal was a total mistake on our side. We won the ball inside the penalty box, but as we tried to counter, our striker misplaced a back pass to #10 of Thailand. It was a point blank shot at goal which our Gk could not save. We could not move the ball offensively during the first half. Thailand was simply far superior technically.
The 2nd half was a different story. Thailand did not ease up. The game became very physical. The ref issued 5 yellow cards during the 2nd half. Thailand only had 4 attempts on goal and we had 3. They converted 2, and we scored on a set play from 40 yards out. The Thai GK could not control a dipper by Amamio. Heather, Sam and Camille followed up on the shot, and Sam scored the goal. This was one time that we were able to execute our set play. The game was very physical during the 2nd half. Marielle Benitez pulled her groin during one of those encounters. There were too many cheap shots from Thailand. So I told the girls to hit back, and apologize the same way the Thai players would after downing one of our own. I don't deny this. I even told our girls to fight back, even if they get a red card. And fight they did. They did not let up, nor did Thailand. They were so pissed with our players, they did not bother to shake their hands after the match. Our girls showed their class by congratulating the Thai bench.
Lots of lessons learned from this match. I was not as upset as the Myanmar game. I told the girls that I was very proud of how they played Thailand. They gave it everything. Unlike the Myanmar match, which I totally believe, we gave away (the refereeing being a major contributor). This match was different. It was dogfight in the 2nd half, and a tactical one during the 1st half.
I guess Thailand liked how we played them. They invited us to come over early 2012 for friendlies. We graciously accepted, and requested that Laos and Vietnam join us during the friendlies. The last time we played Thailand the score was 12-0. The best complement we got, was when a Thai official said that they've never played a team who tried to attack them as much as our team. He said the first half was much closer than the score line. I told him, I agree with him 100%. The Thai TV station even interviewed a few of our players after the game. I believe that this will be a rivalry in the making. I am sure that even if the invitation was for a friendly match, they expect us to go after them again. We will oblige their request.
For now I have to admit that Thailand out classed us in this match. When we meet Thailand next year, our Malditas will be 3 international games smarter, and with an axe to grind!

Comment as STALLION FC coach after match v.s. Global (3-2 W):
Global did not play flat. They were very active from the get go. I had to make adjustments with my left winger. He was lost defensively. When that adjustment was made, we scored 2 goals. It’s not like we were gifted the 2 goals? We were not spotted 3 goals? I’m pretty sure my team worked really hard to score the 3 goals. Let me rehash!
1. Goal 1 40 yrd screamer> What more can I say!
2. Goal 2 (we won the ball from the defender). Jovani one on one after evading a tackle
3. Goal 3 : Doctora beat 2 defenders and the keeper, after we made adjustment during half time to send the ball directly to Doctora, and for Jovani to play decoy. It worked right?
Global started to play better after the 3rd goal. I told my guys to slow down the attack and play possession football. #93 of Global was giving us problems on the left side. I countered that by subbing my injured right wing, transferring the left wing to the right, and introducing a new winger (almost zero crosses from #93). Now my problem was with my right wing. Globals left wing was too fast for my winger. I had to make further adjustments on the right side that is why I brought in a new winger. Unfortunately my holding mid (Gustillo) was injured during a previous play, and needed be replaced also. So 3 new subs in a span of 10 min? Confusion and loss of shape. All part of the game. No sudden change of pace. Why park the bus? My back 4 were playing very well, straight up.
Globals goal: Credit the goals to very good Global attacks
1. Clearance by Cordova hit a global player and bounced in.
2. Goal 2 GK mistake. He saved it but did not secure it.
Both teams had very good chances to score more. Global had more attempts than us during the first half. We had a very good game plan, and we executed it well. The goals were not lucky shots? We practiced those plays. Lets not forget the open goal shot that my player missed when it was 3-2. In short, we did not sit back to protect our lead. If we did, then we could have lost the game because Global mids and strikers are very good?
We kept our composure long enough to win the game. Both teams played good football. We trained for the game, and so did Global. We are not making excuses for winning the game and scoring 3 goals? I am sure Global is not making any excuse either.
Love the results for what it is…. a very good game, from 2 good teams. Plain and simple. It was a very physical game, and my boys did not back down from the challenge.
What axe to grind? I don’t remember telling my players that they have an axe to grind. Just a reminder? I coach the Women’s National team. So I respect all our national team; players, coaches, and managers.
Our game plan was very simple. Stop Misagh, Izo and Ayi. I added #93 during the 2nd half stop we must list. There were no… “axe to grind conversations”… no mysterious change of pace?
My GK was suffering from a high fever before the game. I did not use that as an excuse for the 2 goals? Jason had spike marks from a hard challenge during a corner kick. He was in pain the whole game. I did use that as an excuse for allowing the 2 goals? Three of my players have been training with the U23. So I never had a full squad to train. I did mention that during my interviews. All these things are part of the game.
I knew this was going to be a hard game. I expected nothing less from Global. Sure we played to win. Well so did Global.
We should pray for more matches like this, and not try to over analyze wins and losses.
This match was good for Philippine Football, the UFL, the players, and the fans. Giligans Stallions will always play this way. We will respect our opponents, and we will promise them a very hard match. Some games we may lose. Some we may be good enough to win. Our goal is to win more matches, than we lose.
This is our short term goal. We need to make it out of the group stage, to have a chance to secure our ticket to DIV1. Our long term goal, is to provide long term employment for all our players. Don’t fault us for wanting to win this UFL League cup? We want to make our sponsors happy, just like the other teams.
