FRESH FROM THE PRESS!The newly-released episode of the Back Four Bums podcast by Rick Olivares has just featured PFF president Nonong Araneta and Coach Zoran Đorđević who appeared as they recorded the podcast on location during the Stallions-Air Force game at UMak. And we seem to have a tournament upcoming during the FIFA match days in June! "...PFF President Nonong Araneta who talks about what is in store for Philippine football in 2012 -- the Independence Day Cup (around June) and the invitations to Fulham, Queen Park Rangers, and Blackburn!"According to Araneta, they are sending invites to the Vietnam and Singapore national teams, and Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers to play the national team in Manila during this two-week long invitational torunament. bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2012/01/back-four-bums-cover-air-force-vs.html
I'm more than excited for this and I'm looking ahead that we would hopefully play a Premiership team here in the PI.

Sana matuloy! Kahit reserve teams lang ng Premier League teams. I like the Back four bums pod cast, you learn a lot of little thing about all thing football in the PI. leoisiah you got a great idea here, send the reserves if the starters can't be coaxed to go.

Well, for me, since the friendly tournament is being scheduled on FIFA match days, and the Premiership has just ended at this time, I think this would be a good time for the first team to show up. I heard way back late last year that they have already tapped the Qatar-based events organizer that facilitates the post-season tours of the clubs mentioned. I do hope they stop over here in the PI.

I doubt na kapag malakas na clubs from La Liga or EPL ang nilabanan I doubt na pumayag sila. Why? Because June is also the start of UEFA EURO 2012. Don't expect na may star players from Europe na maglalaro. Let's wait for further announcements marami pang pwedeng mangyari since its 6 months to go baka may ibang malakas EPL or La Liga clubs na sumali rin sa Cup hehe ex.

I would prefer they keep it to NT teams. That way we build rapport with other countries. With EPL teams, their commitment can fluctuate. I think it'd be great to have Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore to come over. That way, we have a yearly gauge of how well our NT is doing compared to the rest of the ASEAN region. Heck, we can even invite teams like Japan or South Korea or even Kuwait for to really test our mettle.

Azkals to play vs foreign teams in Independence Day CupABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 02/14/2012 9:24 PM | Updated as of 02/14/2012 9:24 PM MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Football Association (PFF) is planning a two-week football invitational to keep the Philippine Azkals busy after the 2012 Challenge Cup in March. PFF president Marino “Nonong” Araneta said they are working on the “Independence Day Cup,” which is scheduled to take place in June. “Sa June, we'll invite teams to play here in Manila for our Independence Day Cup,” he said. Among the teams likely to be invited are national teams from Vietnam and Singapore, and English football clubs Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers. The Azkals are currently training in the United Arab Emirates for the Challenge Cup, which will be held in Nepal. The Azkals beat Qatar professional football team Al Ahli, 3-1, in a friendly game after yielding to Uzbekistan Under-23 Olympic team, 3-0. The Azkals will end their Middle East tour on Thursday with an exhibition match against the Australia Qantas Under-23 team. www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/02/14/12/azkals-play-vs-foreign-teams-independence-day-cup

This tournament will be pinned as soon as it becomes official and the teams participating and the schedule is announced. We have had tournaments planned like the Manila Beer Cup last year that never became reality, so let us wait.

Just merged the thread.
Anyway, the problem now is that it will coincide with Euro 2012. If the clubs that the PFF invited would like to sent their first team, it would depend if many of the Europeans there will take international duty.

Thanks stellar, didn't see the one you created!
I hope this comes to fruition, we might as well keep ourselves busy until the next tourney at the 2nd half of the year. Seriously, if we look at our roster for local based Azkals, it actually looks stronger than Mcmenemy's squads in 2010(see one of my threads here for roster or check my blog). With the right game plan, tactics and dedication to playing the game, we can still progress without the foreign based players.
Carli, Angel, Sabio, Moy, Burkey(?), del Rosario(?), Beloya, Angeles twins, Mark Hartmann, the Younghusbands, Aly B(mid year), Chieffy, Gener, Margarse, Sacapano, Barbaso, R. Doctora, Misagh, Ian etc.
The team is not bad, with the right coaching they might take some from unsuspecting teams. "Right" coaching...
*Jacques Van Bossche has expressed interest in schooling in the PI(Bigfoot?).
*Rob Gier?
*Will the team take back del Ro & Burkey?
*Without Burkey we have a pretty weak forward/striker roster, Beloya needs to step up and Ian has to get over that year long slump.
I hope this planned tourney doesn't end up like the Manila Beer one...
