I think it's a good gesture for both them and us since they are our cousins, plus lots of Guamanians are part Pinoy.

Friendlies do not count with FIFA when it comes to eligibility.

If he would have made the cut, then it would have set himself to be part of the Guam team. He has also been flying in and out of Guam during the Division 1 break while the 2012 Challenge Cup was going on. Guam is preparing for the next Challenge Cup qualifiers, and I think they might tap Jonah for the competitions ahead.

Yup,
If he plays or has played in a FIFA sanctioned competition, he will then have been tied to Guam. Besides, with all the European based players available to us, as well as the bigger pool we have in the local scene, his chances of making the Azkals, even if he committed to us is not very good. Hopefully he will make an impact in the Guam team as well, which has close ties to the Philippines, and if I remember right at one time in the past pre-Suzuki, tried to invite the Philippines to an EAFF football tournament in Guam as an invited guest, which we turned down.

I don't think Jonah Romero has Filipino lineage or has close ties in the Philippines. From what I researched he's El Salvadoran by lineage through his father, and has Chamorro roots through his mother, although he's born in Fairfax, Virginia. He only came to know the Philippines by his high school teammate Nate Burkey, who is very close to his family in Virginia. After playing for US college teams and a club in Guam, Nate introduced him to a possibility to play in the Philippines through Kaya FC. I think he's only one of a few players who are eligible for Guam who plays for a club outside the US or the Guam territory. So there's a potential in here.
Actually, it's a good gesture to play them, considering they have close ties to our nation.

How about USA NT vs Azkals? I think that's a possibility also since we also have close ties with US. In all fairness with the PFF or Mr. Dan Palami, I think they should invite USA NT to play for Azkals for a friendly match. I think that would be a good gesture for both countries since we're very close to USA in almost all aspects. What do you think?
I'm just thinking a possibility. :/

Maybe if we qualify and win the Asian Cup, a friendly match with the USMNT can be a possibility. For now we can have Guam as an alternative.

Maybe if we qualify and win the Asian Cup, a friendly match with the USMNT can be a possibility. For now we can have Guam as an alternative. Hi Mod how are you? Hope things are okay. Actually in contrast, inviting the USA team is not a tall order. Remember when Manny Pangilinan was able to bring here NBA premier stars Kobe Bryant, Derick Rose, Kevin Durant. Javale Macgee, Chris Paul and James Harden? Wow! That took a lot of money from his pocket and partners but he was able to do it. NBA players earn more bucks than most pro US soccer players, so the price tag of the US national soccer team is cheaper. If we were able to bring top NBA stars then no question we can bring the USA soccer team who has a lower price tag than their NBA counterparts. I think the hindrance on this venture is not the pay but the capacity to hold such big event. The RMC is not feasible for such ambitious bid, we need a bigger venue to accommodate throngs of spectators to maximize the potential in revenue. If we have such world-class stadium, why settle for the USA team, England or Spain are more enticing. We are not sponsoring a world cup or the Olympics, it is just a one or two game event, we are not a so poor country not to be able to stage such a huge event for the Filipinos.

Sorry the USSF is a very rich FA. They only choose teams that can give them a challenge nowadays or can sell tickets in the US. I believe we can fulfill the 2nd condition but we still need to improve to entice them to play us. Most of the time they choose to play strong European or South American teams in friendlies as well as neighboring countries in the CONCACAF they have had a history with, usually those in the top 50 or 60 teams in the FIFA rankings. This is also because their TV contracts require them to play teams from countries that would entice fans to watch them and unfortunately we are not there yet.

Guam scheduled to play Azkals June 12The Azkals, the Philippines men's national soccer team, officially announced it will play against Guam's national team in a Philippine Independence Day exhibition match June 12 in Bacolod City, Philippines. The announcement is featured on the Azkals' official website www.azkalsfootballteam.com and was posted Wednesday afternoon. The match will be played at Panaad Stadium, which many Filipinos remember as the site where their national team defeated Mongolia 2-0 in the 2012 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifier in February. The Azkals eventually secured third place in the event. "The confirmation of this exhibition match comes at perfect timing, as the Guam men's national team has been preparing since February this year for the upcoming East Asian Football Championship preliminary round here in Guam in July," said head coach Gary J. White, a UEFA A-license coach originally from England. "It will be the perfect stage for us to look at potential starting players, formations and strategies going into the EAFF tournament. "We are grateful for Richard Lai, the Guam Football Association executives and the Philippines Football Federation for putting together this match and assisting us in our preparation for the July tournament. I feel that we can learn so much from the Philippine team. We look forward to the challenge in the Philippines," White added. Big move upThe Azkals moved up almost 20 places in the FIFA world rankings in six months following its success at the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup and the 2011 Long Teng Cup in Taiwan. Among those named to the squad to compete on June 12 is national team vice-captain Emelio Caligdong, the 2011 Long Teng Cup Golden Boot winner. Ian Araneta, the 2010 Long Teng Cup Golden Boot winner, also has been named to the squad. Other notable names include half-English Phil Younghusband and his brother James, half-Spanish Angel Guirado and half-German Denis Wolf. Jason De Jong, who currently plays for FC Dordrecht in the Netherlands and was once called to play on Netherlands' under-19 national team, also is on the team. The list, however, does not include captain Aly Borromeo. The Azkals are coached by Michael Weiss of Germany, according to the FIFA website. Team GuamGuam's squad will feature U.S. collegiate players, including Micah Paulino, who plays for NCAA Division I Niagara University, and Jonahan Romero, a professional soccer player in the Philippines. Others, such as Joshua Borja and Ian Adamos, have returned to Guam to represent the island among Guam standouts like Jason Cunliffe and Ian Mariano. White was most recently with Washington Youth Soccer as its technical director and oversaw the state's elite player development program, selecting the best talent from more than 130,000 registered players. White worked closely with the Seattle Sounders FC, a professional MLS team, while in Washington. White's soccer career also includes time as head coach of the Bahamas, a team that shot up 55 FIFA world-ranking places during his tenure. While in the Philippines, the Guam national team also will train by playing matches against two professional club teams. To assist in realizing the trip to the Philippines, the men's national team is currently seeking company sponsors. To make a contribution to help the men's national team, call Guam Football Association's media and marketing officer Jill Espiritu at 687-5530 or email her at Jill.Espiritu@gmail.com. Information was provided in a press release. www.guampdn.com/article/20120518/SPORTS/205180325/Guam-scheduled-play-Azkals-June-12
GUM will use this game as their preparations for EAFF Cup Qualifications. While they here, they will play 2 matches against 2 clubs here. What club could that be? Could it be Kaya and Global? ;D

Ooo, Guam's making the most of their stay here. I'd like to see them up against our clubs too! It's nice to hear Philippine Football put in such high regard. As for the US Men's National Soccer Team, I don't think a friendly's impossible even at this point (we went up against the LA Galaxy, after all). But I don't think it can be held in the Philippines. To make the match at the very least lucrative, it'll have to be held in the US, perhaps in LA's Home Depot center. All the Pinoys there would fill the stadium.

FYI Home Depot Center is in the city of Carson in LA County. It has(or had) a majority Filipino community, it also was the first American city to vote a Filipino as city Mayor. Sure enough just like in the Philippines, or maybe the Filipino Mayor though he could act like he was in the Philippines, started hiring friends and family members and doing other anomalous acts. Eventually his term of office did not make anyone, especially the large Filipino community in that area, proud.

This could be said about almost any good NT (or at least in the level of Japan/USA/Ecuador and above). Teams like Honduras still fail to get matches with good European teams (the FMF had to help them getting Serbia for example) so it's not just like "I will offer you a lot of money to play me", just teams like Spain, Brazil or the elite European clubs can give themselves the luxury of accepting tons of money for playing a way inferior team. PS: I still would like a Mexico - Philippines celebrating our past bonds thought...

The Azkals, Philippines National Soccer Team, Confirms Independence Day Exhibition Match Against GuamWritten by Jill Espiritu Friday, 18 May 2012 12:42 Guam - The Azkals, Philippines’ national soccer team, have made an official announcement to play against Guam’s national footballers in a media-hyped Philippine Independence Day exhibition match in Bacolod City, Philippines.
