The silver lining here is that the Azkals needed a heartbreaking equaliser, as we are not yet used to close games (such as the draw against SIN during 2010 Suzuki Cup). Its either we're leading with 2 goals or we're behind by a lot more goals. I'm believe in the future this experience will be very important. Hopefully they will not allow that to happen again, experiencing such a painful draw.
That strike from the Malaysian was crafted well. Not much we can do about it, Malaysia in terms of tactics and cohesion is way far ahead in footballing terms. But hey, what happened here was we played even better over all than the Malaysians. This is what I like about football, small teams can play and win over fancied opponents. There is always that possibility that an underdog can still win.
However, though, because they drew, according to the Fifa Rankings blog (just search through jonny's blogroll), PHI could be staying at 156 or go lower. But nevertheless, it was a perfect way to learn something.
Let's move on and look forward for the Challenge Cup and the Suzuki Cup!

I thought Gener was ok there ... my problem was Araneta ... he needed to run and cover a lot more when he came in because he had the fresher legs. Okay, so Misagh committed the foul to stop the Malaysian counter-attack. Misagh was down on the floor. Phil was walking back (undestandably tired already). So was Ian! HE JUST CAME IN. He needed to cover that free kick, so Misagh could go back to the defensive half. What happened next, a 4-v-4 just off the 16-yard box. More precisely, a 1-v-1 right in front of Neil. We were supposed to have 2 holding mid-fielders, so if you count, it should be 6-v-4. Striker beats defender, defender has no support, GOAL, and the win went away. Over-all, the first team was awesome, the last sub didn't know what his role was coming in.

bugbog sarado yung flanks natin, yun lang..haha.. I was expecting a goal from the 60" to 80" from Malaysia because our defense was trembling, lots of opportunity from them. The late equaliser goal was sublime, top class goal, kumagat sa fake si Sabio. napa-WOW ako dun sa Malaysian striker, great composure.

From the Harimau Malaya Facebook page (originally in Malay, Google translated):
"Apparently, Philippines has a new look with quality players and different game than ever before. Apparently, Philippines is one of the challenges that must be seen for AFF Suzuki Cup 2012."
Man Of The Match for MALAYSIA FOOTBALL TEAM PHI: Neil Etheridge MAS: Wan Zack / Safee / Shakir

I come away from this feeling a bit better about our chances in the Challenge Cup and Suzuki Cup. I'm a bit saddened that Wolf won't be in Nepal as he was a far brighter spark on offense than Phil was. Phil just keeps on frustrating me, especially since I know he can do much better than his recent form. All in all, a lot of positives to gain from this friendly. Thanks for coming over, Malaysia, and for the class you brought with you.

DEADLOCK IN MANILAFebruary 29, 2012 MANILA (29 Feb 2012) – The Philippines national team got one of their better results in recent months when they held AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 champions Malaysia to a 1-1 draw in a friendly that was played at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila tonight. Following two heavy losses in a tour of the Middle East recently, the game against the Malaysians was important in that it was the Philippines final tune up match before their participation in the AFC Challenge Cup. And tonight, with several of their foreign-based players to reinforce the squad, the Philippines were the first to make the score sheet when Dennis Wolf slammed home the lead on 33 minute. But the Malaysians showed that they were not about to go home empty handed when young striker Syakir Ali nailed the equaliser right at the end. For the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal, the Philippines are in the same group as India, Tajikistan and defending Challenge Cup champions DPR Korea. The AFC Challenge Cup will be on 8-13 March 2012. www.aseanfootball.org/?p=7744

It was a good match overall minus the heartbreaking equalizer.. Credits must be given to Lexton Moy for a solid midfield game, Jason Sabio again for his exellent defending, Angel Guirado (during the first half) too bad his efforts were not rewarded and Neil Etheridge for his heart stopping saves. Special mention, Juani and Ray Jonsson they were consistent. Phil has been found wanting but it's really understandable coz he's a marked man. Wolf, Props to his efforts and congratulations to his 1st goal on his 1st cap.. more to come i hope!
I think the Gener substitution was a good move. because Carli was not that effective anymore in the 2nd half. But honestly Gener should retire from the national team. give the slot to others to develop like Leonora or Barbaso. Araneta, non existent.. Misagh showed better quality than him.
and the pitch looked really bad.. and Nonong Araneta said that they will be changing it into an artificial turf by July? why? it's the National Stadium it should be grass.. tsk500x SMH!

The draw feels like a loss to me, because I felt that for the first 55-65 min. of the match we dominated possession and the midfield and deserved to get more than 1 goal. I really expected more from the Malays, I was pleasantly surprised that they looked very beatable against a team that didn't have their years-long cohesion.
The Gener substitution was odd as well, I don't think he is expected to play a lot of minutes (if at all) in the AFC Challenge Cup, so why couldn't one of the younger and more probable DFs be given a chance?
Per the Castillejo interview, Wolf won't be playing in Kathmandu, I hope we could get someone to replace him as strike partner for PhilYH, maybe Mulders should play up front, Guirado would be better as CAM.

man seeing the team play today was awesome! they looked like they really have some attacking bite now, but the sad fact is they won't get this complete lineup every time. the only point of concern is the defense, the Malaysians really get through on us especially on the right side. heck, their equalizer was scored from the right side. our boys give them too much space to break and too much time to do anything once they do.
but hey, its the first time I walked out of a Philippine game satisfied. the scoreline flatters Malaysia a lot, but its a friendly, but then again, what a waste.
if only all our chances were going in right? it would have been a rout. Phil's strikes lack punch, Angel was really unlucky, and Wolf wasn't lucky to have scored more.
wonder what the fuss was all about between Neil and Angel when they were going back to the lockers at halftime, they had quite the argument on the pitch.
the only decision I couldn't understand was replacing Wolf with Araneta, Denis was having a great game and didn't look tired, but it was Phil who was already slow and looked like he needed a break.

PHI could be the luckiest in the ASEAN region being dominant in the match vs Malaysia. 2nd is of course MAS 1-1.
The horrible results of other ASEAN nations: THA 0 - OMA 2 SIN 1 - IRQ 7 IDN 0 - BHR 10
Others ASEAN countries didn't have a friendly match today: BRU, CAM, LAO, MYA and VIE

stellarboy Thanks for posting my post from Azkals FB hehehe ;D Anyway Now for my thoughts from the match - PHI really did very well. WE HAVE CHANCE in the AFF SUZUKI CUP
- Angel Guirado is really Amazing. BICYCLE KICK
- Denis Wolf's 1st international cap has 1st goal for him. Congrats.
- Na-turn down lahat when MAS scored WIN NA SANA ;D
- Etheridge is really the PHI's #1 GK for doing a lot of awesome saves. Buwis buhay ginagawa niya
- WE HAVE A CHANCE FOR AFC CHALLENGE CUP
Nah. I checked the results beforehand. Maybe we had the same thoughts. It was a definite heart-stopper!

For once, I found nothing much to criticize about the defense, I thought we defended quite well given we didn't even park the bus like we did against AusU23 when it seemed we just totally abandoned the midfield and just waited for the ball on the last third of the pitch. The Malay goal was literally a last-minute momentary lapse in concentration in front of the sticks, prolly partly due to fatigue. What I did notice was we did relax in the 2nd half and lost the killer instinct as if we were content winning by 1-0, instead of putting the game out of reach by scoring one more and thus deflate the Malay's hopes of equalizing.
