Nice find on the highlights. A younger and hot headed de Jong, a healthy Borromeo, Etheridge confident then and now. Yes, remnants of that team are still here, but this team is 10x better than that one. Go Azkals! Beat Maldives. I've been wanting a rematch against Maldives since 2009, especially after the "Miracle of Hanoi". I'll never forget that headbutt on Gier. I totally forgot that moment where De Jong lost it though. Neil was returning from his clean-sheet Challenge Cup qualification performance from the previous year. However he conceded some goals in this outing. But yeah, 2009 was truly a year to forget for the Azkals, both on and off the pitch. Behind-the-scenes things weren't working well for them at all. And the Pinoysoccer and Azkals.com forums were as far from positive discussions as they could be. So, to me, this match against Maldives does potentially bring things full-circle. A real chance to put the past behind and move on to bigger and better things.

Group A Teams P W D L GF GA GD PTS PALESTINE 3 2 1 0 3 0 3 7 MALDIVES 3 1 1 1 4 3 1 4 KYRGYZSTAN * 3 1 0 2 1 3 -2 3 MYANMAR * 3 1 0 2 3 5 -2 3 Maldives beat Kyrgyzstan, tied Palestine, and lost to Myanmar. Below is the is some background on the team ( full link). I think we can beat this team and it should/must solidify the Azkals standing as one who can and will regularly beat teams like this. I'm hoping this next game in particular (and the tournament in general) is a coming out of sorts that signifies we're much better than the likes of Maldives, Laos, and Myanmar and we will never again be in the same level as that 2009 Azkals team. That Maldives tied Palestine could be because Palestine let their foot off the gas pedal. After all, Palestine won two games already and even a loss could've propelled them to the semis. Maldives have one extra day of rest. Ahhh... the benefits of being host. Go Azkals! The Maldives had a relatively quiet campaign in 2013. Being the host nation of the AFC Challenge Cup, they were not required to partake in the qualifying process. While it is surely a great thing to already have your bid in place, you do miss the competitive aspect of matches that are more significant than friendlies.
Maldives did play some competitive matches in the 2013 edition of the South Asian Football Federation Championships played in Nepal. They were placed in the weaker group B along with eventual champions Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. The Red Snappers were flying high during the group stage; they defeated Sri Lanka and Bhutan by a combined 18-2 and then grinded out a 0-0 draw with Afghanistan to claim top of the group. A semi-final match up with rival India proved to be too much as they bowed out of the SAFF with a 1-0 loss.
The only other matches the Maldives played in 2013 were two disappointing friendly losses to Seychelles in November. Those two wins for the Seychelles proved to be their first wins since 2011. Surely Maldives are anxious to return to the pitch and rid themselves of an unsatisfactory camp.

The team should all do that "voodoo" dance by Muller in the pre-game warm up. Might intimidate the Maldivians!

Unorthodox chants of "boom panis" and "defense" will still reverberate on Tuesday. Always a home game for the Azkals because of Pinoy Power.

let's hope for a speedy recovery for Doctora. he may not be our best player out there, but he needs our support and prayers. some of you here have shared huge concern on Juani's injury, but no one even mentioned Doctora's name after he got subbed off. report says he torned his meniscus, if im not mistaken, it's the same injury that Aly got recently

Does anyone know if the team is still staying in Addu City? Whether they will have to go through the long journey of plane and speedboat to get to the stadium in Male?

Does anyone know if the team is still staying in Addu City? Whether they will have to go through the long journey of plane and speedboat to get to the stadium in Male? as per Cedelf Tupas they're already in Bandos Island Resort for their games at the National Stadium, Male. They still have to travel via ferry boat for 15 minutes before a ride to the stadium.

jonny posted this on his blog:
Dennis Cagara tweet half an hour ago :" Going back Home to Denmark to help my club getting premoted to the best League! But i'm sure the guys will win the AFC Challenge cup! "
Lyngby has fixtures on 5/29, 6/1, 6/9
Looks like Sato has to carry the load at left back from now on.
Frankly it is probably not good for his image in Denmark that he is only a backup for the Philippines national team to a 19 y/o player lacking European club experience.

Perhaps that is one of the reason why Dooley is giving enough exposure for Sato because they know that Cagara will eventually leave 'coz of his club commitments? Hopefully not for any issues.
