Palestine back 4 is imposing and rock-solid with Bahdari spearheading its bulwark. Bahdari who stands 6"2" partners with Omar Jarun 6"5" at centreback. . . At wingbacks are Fares 5"7" at left and Hussam Abu Saleh 5"8" at right. . . Expect the menacing Bahdari to man-mark PYH. . .

Size-wise, fitness-wise Palestinians have an advantage. . .they will play with a complete team whereas the Azkals are plague with injuries. . .this must be a very difficult match for Azkals. . .I pin my hopes on Muller. . .

Watched the first half of the Palestine Afghanistan game. The pace was fast and furious for the first 5 to 10 minutes and it was the Palestinians driving, going for that early goal. That they didn't get it was unlucky because Afghanistan didn't show signs of good defense. There were many penetrating runs into the danger area. I'm sure Palestine will try this tactic again. The good thing is that it leaves them vulnerable to counter attacks, which is what happened. Afghanistan had some penetrating runs of their own.
What to watch out for: fast and furious attacking pace in the first 5 to 10 minutes.
They settled down after that with some good buildup from the back, although long balls, both on the ground and air, was the preferred method. And they were successful, too. The Afghanistan midfield was letting the ball through like liquid through a sieve. There are big guys from the backfield to the midfield. They like making that long pass to the forward, and it's not because their short passes are inaccurate, it's just their style to move the ball up quickly and let the forward do the work.
What to do: close the midfield, watch out for that long pass to the forward
This is a strong, fast, accurate-passing team, better than any of the teams we've faced so far. Much better than Afghanistan, although it was an anomaly that Afghanistan didn't play as well as they did when we played them. The good news is that Palestine is vulnerable to attacks. I wasn't particularly impressed with the defense despite them not conceding a goal in four games. Short passes, short runs, keeping the ball on the ground could be their undoing.
At best I say we're equally matched, so we're going to have to play the best. That physically draining extra 30 minutes of play yesterday is a disadvantage. Palestine, however, played in much hotter conditions and required water breaks. Which one is worst? I don't know. I just hope the Azkals can dig deep and reach into the depths where they think there's no more and grab that extra burst of energy, that extra motivation to win the tournament.
Go Azkals!

For the folks back home, I was just wondering what is the hype like out there. Is the general public finally paying attention to the sport? Is there a sense of anticipation among everyone there on the upcoming match this Friday or are they being overshadowed as usual by the PBA? Has the social media exploded like they did during the Suzuki Cup back in 2010? Are the media giving proper coverage to our first foray in the finals of a major tournament?

"Congrats Azkals", PHLvsMDV, Chris Greatwich, Roland Muller all on Twitter Worldwide Trends for few minutes. It was not as much as during the Miracle of Hanoi but still significant. Mainstream media are now following the progress & giving updates at least every now & then, due mainly to ABSCBN sending TJ Manotoc to Maldives for interviews. I've read a lot of casual fans & personalities congratulating the team even if they didn't watch the game. The replay of the game the following afternoon also helped a lot.

Well... Something has to be done about the CBs this game. They were too spread apart for the last game, which leads me to believe one of them doesn't play the flat CB system at club level.

For one, the Inquirer has them as their front page photo today. Dunno about the other papers. The ongoing PBA conference is a short one with shorter imports, so not much activity in that area. Expect the coverage to ramp up going into the third quarter of the year. As for social media, even parody accounts are tweeting their support. So there is definitely a groundswell. Not as big as the one accompanying the Gilas breakthrough last year, but somewhere close to it.
